It's weird that basketball never caught on over there. If kids grew up shooting hoops instead of sticking wickets you could field a dangerous team! ;)

There was a short spell where it got really big. One of the terrestrial TV channels was screening regular NBA highlights programmes and one live game a week, then all of the play off finals games live, and during that time kids were getting into basketball a lot.

Adidas also did a big campaign where they installed thousands of permanent outdoor courts all over the country. So the kids were for a time able to watch the real deal on TV easily, and had good courts in their neighbourhood to play on.

The sports clothing stores were stocking most of the NBA jerseys too.

The courts are all still there, there's one 5 minutes from my house, for instance, but ever since that TV channel stopped screening the NBA, kids have forgotten it again.

I started playing this summer in a semi-formal league, with people from various college teams, and it is not "football for pussies". No pads doesn't make it automatically BROOTAL. But it does add a more primal element to things.
