It's kinda sad that some Maiden fans consider this enough of a ballad to whinge about it being a ballad. It is, yes. But still, it's not exactly an 80s power ballad or an acoustic song or anything. It's still pretty kickass.

I'm kind of avoiding The Final Frontier until the CD because I heard the leaked version of "The Alchemist" just for shits and grins and the audio was so bad (and Bruce was so bad) that I didn't want to pass any judgment until I had the actual record in my hands. My way too early reaction based on hearing El Dorado, The Final Frontier from the video, and shitty audio The Alchemist, is that this is going to be down with VXI and NPFTD for me. :snivel:

Seriously, Torstein Lofthus is the most incredible drummer most people have never heard of. I could only imagine watching him play this song live...Yeah, that album has been growing on me lately. I had never heard of the Norwegian band called Shining (not to be confused with the Swedish suicidal black metal band) until this album. It's some high-performance shit, that's for sure. Reminds me of Estradasphere or something along those lines. The bass in the above song at around 3:30 is fucking wicked, too. Sounds like Meshuggah fused with IntrOnaut or some such crazy sheeit. :D

Never heard of Estradasphere but will have to look em up now. I played this cd for some friends and they loved it. Didn't expect that really. They are Meshuggah fans so maybe thats why. I know in my car it's a total aural assault on my ears and I go from jamming out to picking my jaw up off the floor. Crazy sheeoott is about right.

Almost through one full listen and I've gotta say I think this is even better than Super Taranta. It's the Octahedron to Super Taranta's Bedlam in Goliath; way more subdued and focused and able to draw its strength from the songwriting. My top ten is going to have to find room for this, at least for the time being.

I was merely suggesting that you might focus your attention on some other songs that you might like a whole lot more (and I still think you would - the songs you were listening to are considered staples by some, but none of them were among my personal favorites at all - except "Mud").

No "demands" were made whatsoever - merely friendly suggestions. Plus, I thought if anybody would be up for the challenge of opening up his mind and listening to something "not quite accessible", it would be you. Guess I overestimated you. ;)

I dunno, I'll check out a little more I guess, but I've had them jammed down my throat for about five years now by various parties and you'd think it woulda took by now.

And I won't definitely feel like I've achieved some higher level of musical transcendence if I start to "get" them. I don't think they do something on some higher level that I just can't understand. I get what they're doing, and I hate it. There should be no reward for liking any music. That's the attitude that makes people start hanging out at jazz clubs or saying how much better Charles Ives is than the classical composers.

I was just giving you the advice since you seemed to be interested at the time. I'll bet money that you like the stuff I suggested more than what you've had shoved at you by the mass media machine or your friends who like them. Some of the more obscure songs are the best, in my opinion, because they showcase the skill that the band has in spades (especially Les).

Try whittling down my list to the following, if the original list is too daunting:

Frizzle Fry: The Toys Go Winding Down, Harold of the Rocks
Seas of Cheese: American Life, Eleven, Tommy the Cat, Fish On
Pork Soda: DMV, Ol' Diamondback Sturgeon
Punchbowl: Southbound Pachyderm
Brown Album: Over the Falls, Puddin' Taine, Duchess

I've been getting into Manson recently, and I must say it's the more recent stuff that I prefer. Not what I expect from him at all and it's all actually quite good. I've been really enjoying the Holy Wood, Eat Me Drink Me and The High Side of Low albums. Also have The Golden Age of Grotesque, which I don't like so much.

Kinda sounds like something that could have been on Fear of the Dark. I promise that's not an insult.

Okay, so everyone has been saying OMG BALLAD, but is this any more of a ballad than Wasting Love or even Out of the Shadows, really?

Okay, cool, it's fast...least favorite song so far though. Partly because Bruce's The Alchemist is so amazing and Maiden really didn't need to write their own.

...and the onslaught of epics begins. Without having heard any of the next four songs, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Maiden fucked up the pacing on this record.

EDIT: The lyrics remind me a lot of The Wicker Man. Unlike "The Wicker Man".

Everbody's favorite, let's see how this goes down...

EDIT: Mmmmm, I'm feeling this. I can see how more listens could propel it to my favorite, too.

Not crazy about this (very fucking long) intro. Bruce sounds kinda weird, and the acoustics aren't really doing anything interesting. Once it picks up it gets fairly awesome, but this might be my least favorite for now. First impressions often mean nothing with Maiden though, so hey, my mind's wide open.

Didn't call it bad, called it my least favorite. Well, "The Alchemist" is probably worse actually, I just really need to like that intro a lot better. Might come with time.

This, on the other hand...  The harmony that comes in after the slow intro gave me a rock-hard boner.

The same can be said about Wildest Dreams, Different World, and The Pilgrim. Maiden are just better at slow, long songs at this stage in their career. Aside from being fast, The Alchemist doesn't offer a lot. :2cents:

Bracing myself for boredom...Steve-penned 11 minute songs scare me.

The chorus of The Alchemist gives me a massive boner. I love it. There is no way in hell any track from 3-8 on this album could even be in running for my least favorite track.

And The Man Who Would Be King annoys me, because I think it had a lot of potential, but overall, not that great.

You have the right reaction. What a dissappointment.
