makes more sense then them covering Surfin' USA or Barbara Ann

Actually, that cover seems like it would be off-the-wall but really isn't, in my opinion. The Beach Boys were revolutionary with their use of vocal harmonies and rounds, which Blind Guardian have taken in an obviously much heavier direction. The Beach Boys carry a stigma because their lyrics and band name are silly and their guitar tone was (intentionally) atrocious, but they had a profound influence on so much of the more vocal-oriented rock and metal to come that you gotta give 'em props.

This, on the other hand, the Beach Boys had nothing to do with. :D

I really don't care for the majority of the album. In the Presence of Enemies Part 1 is excellent, and I really like Forsaken. I can tolerate Constant Motion, Prophets of War, and ItPoE Part 2. The other 3 songs are crap IMO. It's my least favorite Dream Theater album.

Arghoslent only hate jews and blacks.
Pogrom is Argentinian. Even then, the argument could be made that they don't HATE them (well jews they hate) but have dumb beliefs that they are genetically inferior, almost all the racist lyrics are from a genetic point of view.
They are stupidly nazi/confederate though, on the back of my Hornets of the Pogrom LP the only information of the production of the album is "Recorded South of the Mason-Dixon Line."

Amazing song! The first time that I heard it was right after my son was born. It definitely hit home with me.

By the way, the CD is on sale for $7.99 here (http://www.impulsemusic.com/catalog/detail.asp?id=7855) if anyone is interested.

Yeah, that entire album is really great. It's one of the first things I listen to whenever I feel down, and that particular song does fit too well with the situation in Arizona - I had to listen to it again when CoS posted that. :/

I think I might give Evergrey a shot. My only exposure to them was seeing them open for Iced Earth, and I thought they were boring, but that was a long time ago and I wasn't paying much attention. What's a good place to start?

Yay! Evergrey are pretty amazing. My personal favorite album of theirs is probably In Search of Truth, but Recreation Day is probably a really good place to start in terms of getting into their stuff. But I'd say just wait for Jeff to come on and tell you all about their stuff because I'm certain he's the biggest Evergrey fan here. ;)

Alright, so to anyone it may concern, here are my thoughts on Evergrey:

You can not go wrong with any of these 3:
In Search of Truth
Recreation Day
The Inner Circle

Personally, I think all 3 are essential listening. The first two (The Dark Discovery, Solitude Dominance Tragedy) have a bit more of a raw, gothic sort of vibe, and the last 2 (Monday Morning Apocalypse) have more of a modern, less progressive approach.

Overall I rank all 7 as follows:
01 In Search of Truth
02 The Inner Circle
03 Recreation Day
04 Solitude Dominance Tragedy
05 The Dark Discovery
06 Torn
07 Monday Morning Apocalypse

WAY too early to accurately judge the new one. As of this point I'm saying it's looking at 5th out of 8.

In all honesty, The Great Deceiver is one of my least favorite songs on the first 5 Evergrey albums. That song, "Visions", and "Fragments" are 3 songs on that album that don't QUITE do it for me like Evergrey usually does. With that album, that band went for a less progressive, more straight-forward approach. It was supposed to be an album full of songs they wanted to play live.

Are you trying to argue that the production on this album is better than Burden of Truth? Are you kidding me? I love everything about the way BoT sounds and hate the way this one sounds. It probably DOES sound better than the last one, but that's not saying much. I actually will agree to most of these claims in comparison to Delusions of Grandeur, but in NO way do agree to a single one of them in comparison to Burden of Truth, which is easily that band's masterpiece IMO, though the debut is up there as well. Great production, great hooks, love all the songs, and the guitar work is by far the best of any CIIC album.

In actual fact, the way they both sing the songs is identical. And that make sense in the context of the timing of Martin joining the band. He was brought in towards the end of the production of the album, so he's basically come in and re-sung Gillen's parts more or less note for note, apart from 'Scarlet Pimpernel', which Gillen didn't do I don't think, and the b-sides 'Black Moon' and 'Strange Kind of Woman', which Martin wrote.

The production of that album was never that great either. To the point where once you're about two tracks into the Gillen demos, you forget they're even different to the album versions.

Enjoyable listening and well worth the purchase even if you own the original.

Disagree. Yea the interludes are a little much, but if those were gone and IOTCO ended the album proper (without fading out), that album would be the most brutal one of that year.

I'm not even talking about the interludes, I just didn't think the songs were very memorable. I mean, I love the Morbid Angel sound and all, but I was a little underwhelmed. IOTCO's solo is pretty sweet though :blaze:

I'm on the opposite end. I thought all the songs were super fucking brutal and heavy. Chambers of Dis, Hellspawn, Prayer of Hatred, they all just smash through multiple brick walls.

You'll do just fine. Just remember. Altars > Gateways. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

Isn't Altars considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, death metal album ever? I would assume that Altars>Gateways is sort of a given.

Actually, I'm listening to Gateways right now, and it's pretty damn good, but it's no Altars, either. Obviously :allan:

So did you ever recommend me some bands on your thread over at the Mayhem Boards? I haven't seen it so I'm asumming not...

Also, I'm pretty sure we established that I'll do fine here when I posted my top 10 list of 2010. ;)

I saw an ad for them in Decibel, said it was for fans of Toxik and Angets Steel, so I checked it out. It's pretty good.
