------------

Let me start off by saying that I expected this show to be a life-changing experience. Perhaps that is why I was so disappointed after the show. My dad said I should just look at it as a show, a fun experience; nothing more. I don’t want to agree with him, because this is not just any show, it’s fucking SLAYERRR!!!! But he’s probably right.

My family and I walked around Milan during the day. My dad randomly decided that he and my mom would check out the venue and where its general location was. I told them it made no sense, but they wouldn’t listen to me. My mom and I walked by it while my brother and I stood back. They came back horrified. And at what else, the fans! My mom kept saying “you need to give up metal” and “don’t grow up like those people” and “these people are losers, druggies, high-school drop-outs with no jobs.” At that I kinda lost it and told her to shut up. I knew it was kinda true but there was no need for her to be like that.

My dad probably got scared the most. He sat my brother and I down and started telling us “these are not your cute, short-haired Atlanta metalheads. These are the real deal. These people are like the bad people I ran into in New York, but 10x worse.” My brother was rolling his eyes and my dad fucking lost it and was like “that’s it, you’re not going.” Hahahaha.

Once we got to the venue it was clear that this was a regular metal crowd, nothing more. Sure, the guys in the pit were “scary,” but what shirtless pit warriors aren’t? Maybe these guys were worse, but all in all my parents, esp. my dad, completely overestimated the crowd. Those people they saw waiting outside 4 hours before the show were the diehards, and everybody knows what Slayer diehards look like ;) That was what I was trying to make clear to my parents to no avail.

The Haunted was decent. The few songs they played that I knew (D.O.A., Moronic Colossus) but the rest were pretty average. They did suffer from sound issues.

I was praying, PRAYING, that Slayer wouldn’t suffer from these same sound issues, but alas, they did. They opened with “World Painted Blood” which I screamed along to. In fact I screamed along to every song so there’s no need to mention that. Anyways it was quite a fiery opener.

“Jihad” was next. When they opened with this, I knew what they were doing: Seasons in the Abyss in its entirety. I had been dreading this for a month and now it was basically confirmed. Since it was their 2nd night here I had reasonable belief to believe it anyway. It’s not that Seasons is a bad album- it’s an amazing album- it’s that they would be neglecting to play Silent Scream, Hell Awaits, and fucking Chemical Warfare!!! The latter two songs are pretty much staples so it’s not this would have been my only chance (granting I saw Slayer live again), but Silent Scream is far from a staple, a rare song indeed. And it’s my 2nd favorite Slayer song, so…

Oh yeah, “Jihad.” It was pretty good but not really good or anything.

They continued to play “Hate Worldwide,” “Disciple,” and “Beauty Through Order.” All of them were good but “Beauty” was really great.
“WAR ENSEMBLE!!!!!” Such a great song, and it was no less great live…ok, maybe a little. It was just a little underwhelming, I gotta say.

They paused at this point…I held my breath…what would they play? I heard a riff...for the first couple of seconds I didn’t recognize it…oh shit, it was “Blood Red.” Now it was confirmed. Oh well, I was determined at this point not to let the setlist bother me and to just enjoy the show.

“Blood Red,” “Spirit in Black,” and “Expendable Youth” were all great though I would be lying if I couldn’t notice lackluster sound. Also, it’s worth mentioning, Slayer had no stage show. I had never though about it before the show, but days later I realized that Slayer is known to have some sick fucking stage shows, with upside down crosses, blood, Auschwitz displays, etc. What a shame…

“Dead Skin Mask” was KILLER. I had always considered this song to be pretty meh; a couple of days before the show, I re-listened to it and realized that the song was, in fact, amazing. Still their live rendition blew me away. One of the top three songs of the night, for sure.

“Halllowed Point” and “Skeletons of Society” were great. “Temptation” wasn’t as bad as I or anyone would’ve thought. The second half of that song is really cool anyways. “Born of Fire”… meh. I’m not a fan of that song on record and that didn’t change live.

They closed out with “Seasons in the Abyss.” HOLY FUCKING SHIT. Song of the night without a doubt. Maybe it was just that the crowd was so into it, but this song was so epic live. I had always considered the song to be pretty good, maybe great, but not as good as “Expendable Youth” The two songs are still pretty equal to me but I have more respect for “Seasons” now.

And thus was the end of Seasons in the Abyss. The riff for “Mandatory Suicide” kicked in and the place went nuts. They changed up the riff sorta, but overall I wasn’t that impressed..

The riff for “Raining Blood” started and the place went apeshit. I’m gonna be honest, for the first second or so I didn’t recognize what they were playing. I’m an idiot, no doubt about that. I quickly realized it though and started moshing. It was great but, like “War Ensemble,” a little underwhelming. They didn’t even play the solos- they just cut to “Aggressive Perfector,” which was great, a very fun song. But I still can’t believe that they actually skipped the solos.

They walked out and came back in a minute or two later. No point of that really, but aren’t all encores just an opportunity to stroke one’s ego? Well, it’s Slayer, so they can do as many encores as they want, I’m good. Anyways, “South of Heaven.” This song was fucking amazing, probably the 2nd best song of the night. And then they closed with “Angel of Death,” obviously. This was the 4th best song of the night. Why not in the top three, you ask? It is my favorite Slayer song of all time, isn’t it? True, true- but exactly for that reason alone I was slightly underwhelmed. Only SLIGHTLY- it wasn’t to the same degree as “War Ensemble” and “Raining Blood.” However, it was still amazing and a perfect way to close out the night.

I bought a t-shirt walking out- pretty steep price, at 30 euros (figure about 36 bucks). Oh well. I wanted to remember this show, even if it didn’t exactly meet my insanely high expectations. There were guys selling tons of bootleg shirts outside for 10 euros a pop- pretty cool, if you ask me that they can do that. The bootlegs sucked though.

I’m not gonna rate the show because I really don’t want to. Figure this: best show of my life, just didn’t feel like the best show of my life.

tl; dr: fuck you if you didn't read this, I spent like an hour on this  No, but in all seriousness: "Seasons in the abyss, "dead skin mask, "south of heaven," and "angel of death" were amazing. "War Ensemble" and "Raining Blood" were a bit underwhelming. Great show but I set too high expectations and was thus disappointed, but it was sorta justified: bad sound and no "Hell Awaits," "Chemical Warfare," or "Silent Scream" (which they played on every other date on the tour)

Your parents are twats, just sayin'.

Also, you definately had waaaay too high expectations. Especially since Araya can't even headbang anymore.

To be honest, I was a little underwhelmed when I saw them on the Mayhem fest last year, but for me there were a few reasons that came into play;
1. I was tired/thirsty (After hours upon hours of waiting with Trivium, Cannibal Corpse, and Killswitch Engage playing in a row before Slayer's set, I think anyone would be fucking dead).
2. Manson fans in the crowd (Do I really need to explain?).

They still played a great set though. Hopefully when I see them next month with hopefully a real thrash crowd (considering it's them with Megadeth and Testament, I'm not so worried) it will be a better show.

haha they're a little overprotective  I do have a serious problem with setting reasonable expectations, though...seems like whenever I set expectations for anything, I'm disappointed in the end.
I agree with you that dehydration can defiintely ruin a show (I've had first-hand experience with this) and well, gay fans can too  also I heard rumors of a 2nd leg of American Carnage, too, so hopefully I can see them again.

Fucking tell me about it. So many awesome shows got fucked up for me because of tiredness/dehydration. Testament in Jersey last year, Lamb of God/As I Lay Dying, and the first time I saw Metallica (missed the first half of Puppets and a great spot to get water ) comes to mind.

The Mayhem set is awesome. Sadly I didn't get to go. Where were you seated? I heard from my friends that Slayer sucked at Mayhem...but they were on the lawn, so that may have something to do with it.

The American Carnage set is gonna suck. Figuring they'll play 60-70 minutes, they'd only play Seasons, "Angel of Death," "Raining Blood," "South of Heaven," a couple of songs off their new album, "Disciple," and probably "Jihad."

Not bad songs, obviously, but it would only be the three staples and about four new songs. Hopefully they realize that on a short set like this, it would be best to keep new stuff to a minimum- but I doubt that.

Dethklok for me (Not a fan, but they sounded okay live, and well, the tickets were expensive, so I consider that a ruined show sorta). What happened was the band sounded 100x louder than they actually were and I had to hold my ears closed the whole time. Too much of a pansy to walk out.

that sucks about Metallica, hopefully you'll get another chance.

I was on the lawn for Slayer. Sure you can't really tell whats going on up there, or see the people clearly, but it's still fucking Slayer and they played a killer set, so I have no qualms about their performance at Mayhem, I'm just glad I got the chance to see metal legends that helped shape my interest in metal live. :rocker:

I would definitely like to see them sometime again though, but my dumbass city doesn't have anywhere for bands of that size to play.

I saw them again last November, though it was in seats, which was pretty lame, especially the fans. That's the one thing I hate about Metallica; the stupid "fans" that go to their shows but only know the fucking singles from the Black Album. Really, I must have been the only person in my section headbanging and singing along to "Fight Fire With Fire" and "Whiplash." The next time they come around I'm probably gonna have to get a goddamn Metclub account, so I can actually get GA.

Yeah man, GA is a bit more expensive but probably worth it for Metallica. It's dumb that people would go see Metallica live just for the Black Album and new album, though (and maybe "Master of puppets" and "one").

thanks. alright, good to know the sound wasn't that bad from the lawn. It would suck for me not to see the stage, though.

Also, they're going to Cleveland on American Carnage- Cleveland is about two hours from Pittsburgh I think. of course you probably realized that though

I was right in front of Tom the whole show. They played with precision that others said they lacked at other shows. Sound was okay at the beginning then got better as the night progressed. It sounds like I got the best night from them, and I'm happy I did.

Interesting review. I'm still shocked that someone loves Expendable Youth and doesn't like Born of Fire but i'm all about the speed. EY bores the living shit outta me and along with temptation are the only 2 songs I wouldn't love to hear.

So you're from Atlanta and went to Milan, Italy to see a concert? That might be the coolest part of the entire story

Eh maybe so but albums should only be played if every song is so amazing that no other song could replace it on the set. That's not the case with Seasons. Maybe it is with you...American Carnage should rule, then! :rocker:

The paradox with me is that they don't want me to drive to concerts myself because they have to stay awake until I get home, but they don't want to drive me either. So...big conflict there. I've definitely missed my share of shows, but I've been to every must-see.

Epidemic kicks ass, probably the most underrated Slayer song that isn't on Show No Mercy. That thrash break is nasty. And it is indeed better than all three of those Seasons songs, not to mention just about every Seasons song except for the title track, War Ensemble and Hallowed Point.

Criminally Insane is good but not great. That guitar riff in the middle kicks alot of ass, but it takes it's sweet time getting there.

Reborn is...meh. Easily the weakest song on RIB

They should do Hell Awaits in it's entirety live. That would kick some ass.

Also, this.

Reborn and Epidemic have always stood out negatively to me. You've got Angel of Death, Piece by Piece, Necrophobic, Altar of Sacrifice, Jesus Saves, and Criminally Insane...and then Reborn. Not dissing it, it's a good song, but that and Epidemic definitely ruined the streak.

I need to listen to Reign in Blood without those two songs and see if the whole thing feels weird. I don't want to call them filler because I think they contribute to the album as a whole and removing those two songs from the album would damage the integrity of it. But I may be wrong.

I can kind of defend calling it Reign in Filler on these grounds: if Reborn or Epidemic popped up in a setlist and wasn't a part of playing the album in its entirety, you'd consider that a waste of a spot in the set. Not sure you can say the same about any songs on South of Heaven.

I like Cleanse The Soul but Reborn is 10 times better and a great song to hear live regardless of the setlist. One of the most fun, sing-a-long bang your head songs off the cd.

In my opinion I would say that Reborn is the 'least best' on the album. I would like to see Epidemic live though.

At least they aren't doing Reign In Filler...

Yes, I'm sure people sure are clamoring to hear Criminally Insane, Reborn, and Epidemic. ;)

Pffffffffffft, if Criminally Insane isn't killer, then neither is Temptation.

Bullshit, bullshit and more bullshit.

----------------------------------------

Criminally Insane is awesome.

Criminally Insane ain't filler

Criminally Insane is amazing man

Dude, Criminally Insane is one of the best tracks on RIB, what the fuck.This. It was the first Slayer song I ever heard, and it still is one of my favorites. Epidemic and Reborn are also awesome. Better than Temptation, Skeletons of Society, and Born of Fire.

:bigfinger:nutkick:

I'd rather hear Criminally Insane and Epidemic over Temptation or Hallowed Point, but I do like those songs.Yes, yes, yes, correct on both counts, no kidding and FUCKING EXACTLY.

Reign in Blood is the best album ever made and LeBron has single handedly ruined what little interest I had in the NBGeigh. The Wiz get John Wall and I have thiiiiis much interest and it's gone now.

They colluded a month ago and are all going to Miami and will still lose to the Lakers and we'll all laugh. Cheaters never prosper. Kobe rapes a girl and will be seen as a hero while LeBron is villified for years and years. hahaha What a joke!

Next to anyone who says Reign in Filler, LeBron is Doucleclown of the Year for 2010.

^ Whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy there, champ. First of all, LeBron hasn't even announced what he's going to do yet. Even if he does leave - and trust me when I tell you that I will be one of many who would be extremely disappointed to see that happen - how does that make him a doucheclown? It depends on what his motives are, doesn't it? How could you possibly claim to know what those are?

I'm also puzzled because when you say he will be vilified, it almost sounds like you're sympathizing with him, but then you join in the roasting by calling him names before he's even made a move. You're confusing me, man.

Dude, do you really need a 1-hour special to know he's going to Miami. He'll be the most hated players in sports not named Tiger Woods after this. ESPN has devoted 56 of the last 70 hours of programming to this assclown and after he betrays his hometown, shits on NY (which I love by the way) and tries to buy a dynasty in Miami, who won't hate him? Other than the million cubans in Miami of course.

Even been to Miami? His stock and endorsements will increase tenfold. Dude it's 99.9 Miami. If I'm wrong, call me out, but I won't be. They colluded and planned this shit a month ago and the NBA is a total joke for allowing it.

Guess who joins them next year? Carmelo Anthony. Glad I won't be watching that farce of a sport.

I think the whole hour special thing is so that he can kind of..well how should I put this..still be liked by some in Cleveland. I think he's going to announce his signing with Miami, but make most of the special about how much he enjoyed Cleveland and etc. But no matter what he does, unless he says tonight that he's staying in Cleveland, a vast majority of people will look down on him.

BRING ON FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!All I'm saying is wait until he makes a move before you start your guns blazing. If you're ultimately correct about this, it's not like it takes a rocket scientist to see it coming, as it's one of the likely scenarios. If it doesn't play out that way, then you look like an idiot. I'm just saying hold your horses, son. There'll be plenty of time for whining and bitching after the announcement.

...and as far as the ego thing goes, I somewhat agree with you there, but then again we haven't seen what the special is going to be. What if it turns out to be some kind of heart-felt message? How will you feel then?

Finally, regarding your comment about the 56 of the last 70 hours being spent discussing LeBron or whatever - I have no idea where you're getting your numbers but regardless of how much time the media devotes to him, it isn't under his control what they decide to cover. He may enjoy all the hype and use it to his advantage, but first of all, he isn't in control of it, and secondly, wouldn't you do the same thing if you had the opportunity? Be honest, now...

Actually the 1-hour special is because ESPN threw $1.5 mil at him to do it. If he was returning to Clevelend the show would be filmed there and they would throw a huge party afterwards. Apparently TNT offered $1 mil and Bron's people went to ESPN and got $1.5 mil.

That is probably a contributing factor as well, but with this hour, I don't think he is just going to be talking about "Oh yeah, Miami will be great!", I think it will mostly be about Cleveland.

And like Nat said, who knows, we could be wrong.

Dude, I'm not hating on him for cashing in at all. I just hate how the three of them went about it. It's collusion. Plain and simple. Collusion is cheating to me and if it's this bad now it's only going to get worse in future years. The NBA is officially ruined to me. It's players colluding to make as much money as possible and squashing all the small market teams.

Sorry Nat but any chance Cleveland ever had of winning anything just flew out the window. Once Chris Bosh said he would play ANYWHERE with Lebron except Cleveland it was over Bro. Just sayin'

Well Said. I for one am grateful Slayer are doing these full album tours. I never heard anything about them doing Seasons so I will travel if I have to just to catch it.

More bands need to do this. Slipknot's not my favorite band but to see their s/t cd in it'e entirety would be awesome. South of Heaven would be incredible. If Overkill did Taking Over or Years of Decay I'd be right there too.

Reign in Blood might be the only album I can sing every word to without the music... and at a million miles an hour.

Convicted witch my life will end at midnight on the stake
My dedicated life was spent to insubordinate
Secured locked inside a cell imprisoned for no crime
These shackles will be useless when your life is out of time
Incantation spell gone by I'll see life again
My deals were made eternally I sign the book in red
My rage will be unleashed again burning the next morn
Death means nothing, theres is no end....

I WILL BE REBOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!
