View Full Version : Stanley Cup Playoffs!

Round 1 has been insanely entertaining and competitive so far. So far, no one is emerging as completely dominant, though the Penguins and my Caps are starting to hit a stride. The fucking Habs gave us fits in the first game and the first 2/3rds of the second, but since then we've absolutely reamed them. Ovechkin clearly does not take kindly to being called out after a bad game, and him and Backstrom took it out on Halak. It's becoming abundantly clear that Theodore is worthless in the playoffs, but it looks like Varly can pick up the slack. Here's hoping we can close the deal quickly. I think the Pens have figured out the Senators, too, and will probably take it in 5. Crosby has been playing out of his mind. Bruins and Sabres will be a low-scoring, 7 game grudge match it looks like, and ditto for the Devils and Flyers. In the West, I'd love to see Phoenix and Nashville move on to the next round. The Sharks are already starting their playoff choking, and the Canucks might be in trouble after Luongo shit the bed last night. Here's who I think will move on to the semi-finals:

East:
Capitals
Penguins
Devils
Sabres

West:
Coyotes
Blackhawks
Canucks
Avalanche

Beyond that, who knows. Sound off!

We are going to beat the Devils in round 1, no question. For those who don't know, the Flyers record is 5-1 vs. New Jersey during the regular season this year.

After that... as long as we don't have to play Pittsburgh, the sky is the limit, and anything goes.

Aside from that, I agree with most of your picks. The Sharks are going to choke, that's a no-brainer.

[IMG]For those who don't know, the Flyers record is 5-1 vs. New Jersey during the regular season this year.We were 4-0 against the Penguins last year and still got knocked out by them in the second round. Different teams, different situation, but still. Regular season records aren't always reliable predictors when it comes to the playoffs.

I realize that, but still. I have a lot of faith. Right now the Flyers are actually beginning to play like the cohesive team they should've been all season, maybe minus much offensive power. Boucher has been superb.

Boucher has been superb. Now that I'll agree with. There are a lot of exciting goalies in this playoffs. Rinne for the Preds and Rask for the Bruins have been really fun to watch.

I think the bigger crime would be living in Canada and not liking Hockey at all. He's probably just mad that the Sabres won the divison and not the Habs:)

Powerslave85 is right. It looks like the Sabres/Bruins series is gonna be a seven game grudge match. The Sabres will take it in the end though. The Sabres have been good all year long and Ryan Miller has been awesome in net. They have a good shot at going far into the playoffs. I'll start to worry if we have to play the Penguins though.

I've been a Bruins fan for as long as I remember, needless to say that gave me a fair lot of trouble when cheering for them over the years here in Montreal, I did start taking for them to upset my dad when I was young, he was so fanatic about the habs ...

I even went to see my idol hockey player Bam Bam Cam Neely at the old Boston garden in '91. We have a good team this year but for some reason we are unable to score goals and Miller is hard to beat but I predict a Bruins win in 6 games

I think the three Stanley Cups Brodeur has won with the Devils beg to differ on him being a "playoff choker". If you get numerous playoff apperances and don't ever win the big one then sure you're a choker.

The crime in this is that he's NOT the Captain of the NJ Devils.

Not now though. If all goes well, the Flyers will end their series victoriously tonight, and eliminate the Devils. :D

There was a huge fan push to get him traded to the Devils awhile back. They'd make a fortune in jersey sales.

I really wanted the Flyers to play the Capitals, because I wanted to make sure if we got beaten, the team that beat us could knock them out (which I believe you guys would have done). Now anything goes. Granted, I agree that I don't see anyone stopping them, but I didn't see Montreal eliminating Washington, so anything is possible.

Leighton is the best goalie the Flyers have had all season, IMO. I am not concerned for Boucher's injury. Also, if the team keeps playing as well as they did last night, he's not going to need to turn in an astounding performance.

Unfortunately the screening being free brought out all the riff-raff - casual fans who dont know much about the game, just there because they don't care enough to pay for tickets. Nevertheless, awesome time. The vibe was as strong as ever, we set right in the front row of the lower level, banged on the boards as much as possible (because how many times am I going to get to?). Epic as hell, no words to describe the electricity in the building and everywhere around, was so happy to be a part of such a cool night in Flyers (and hockey) history.

I might post some pictures later, have to see how they got.

So in other words, you got there early to secure the best spot, got excited and interactive during the event, and you prefer people don't get rough. Sounds familiar lol.

Game 1 Sunday at noon... kinda lame.

I was very surprised at how dominant the Flyers were today. They were extremely effective at shutting down the Habs' two biggest strengths: Halak and Cammallari. I don't know if they can keep it up, though; the Habs have proved all through the playoffs that they're good at bouncing back from a bad loss.

As for the West, could go either way, but I'm rooting for the Sharks. Niemi was playing out of his mind today, though.

Meant to post this earlier - a very good friend of mine has a very sick baby, and we held a beef and beer fundraiser a few months ago. We solicited some local companies/teams/etc for donations. Briere personally had my friend down to the game as his guest, then signed sticks/pucks/photos when he met him after the game for us to use in the silent auction. As cool as Brieres playoff run is right now, his generosity really makes him the man

And I hate that stupid song they play in chicago after every goal:D Go flyers.

I am so excited for this. Been watching all sorts of interviews and whatnot all day, can't believe it's really happening. Everywhere I turn people are talking about how the Flyers don't have a shot, but I don't get it. After the way the past 6 weeks have gone, I feel like the team has no limits. As long as they keep playing the way they generally have been the entire playoffs - it's very possible. Certainly not gonna be a short/easy series either way.

As long as they keep playing the way they generally have been the entire playoffs - it's very possible. Certainly not gonna be a short/easy series either way.

Hawks in 5, and here's why:

1. Philly has not faced a team with the scoring depth of the Chicago Blackhawks all playoffs. Let's face it, New Jersey choked as usual, Boston had key injuries and struggled to score all season, and Montreal rode the hot hand of Mike Cammilleri. Now look at Chicago's weapons: Toews, Kane, Byfulgien, Sharp, Hossa, Bolland, Versteeg, Ladd, Madden....they have three lines that can score. That is by far the most offense Philly has had to deal with all year. Chris Pronger can't be on the ice all the time, and eventually one of those lines will bust through.

2. Antti Niemi > Michael Leighton. Niemi has had to contend with Vancouver and San Jose, two teams with a lot of offensive firepower and stole a couple games for the Blackhawks in the conference finals. San Jose fired over 40 shots at him game after game. Leighton, on the other hand, had to face over 30 shots only once in the conference finals against Montreal....and they lost that game. In the end, I think the rookie's experience facing tough opponents will pay off.

3. Chicago knows they have to get it done this year. Once summer hits, the salary cap will ravage their lineup like it did to my Red Wings last year. This is a one-year deal for these guys. Plus, the Flyers have lost their past 5 finals. :D

If Philly can steal one in Chicago, it could go 6 or 7 games, but Chicago is 7-1 on the road. Jeff Carter and Ian Laperriere returning to the lineup vastly improves Philly's chances, and Chris Pronger, as much as I hate the guy, knows how to win. Plus there's always the rust factor of not playing for a week. My view may change after Saturday's game, but I like Chicago in 5.

What a first post lol.

I'm trying not to get overly upset, but this one-goal shit is annoying. It would almost be easier to deal with if the games were blow-outs where Chicago clearly bested the Flyers. But yeah, I feel like if the game last night would've been 2 minutes longer we would've tied it and sent it to over-time - the Flyers dominated the entire third period.

Everyone was better last night though. I'm still really excited to see Game 3.

I didn't see the game, but on Sportscenter this morning they were saying the Flyers were the better team. I have to take that with a grain of salt, though, because the people on SC don't know shit about hockey.

I think the better team changed throughout the game. The first period was pretty even, hence the no goals. Second period was Chicago, third period was the Flyers. As I said in my last post - unless there had been a colossal momentum change, if there were 2 more minutes the Flyers could've scored and sent it to overtime.

I think next game will decide it. If the Flyers win, I think it has a chance to go 6 or 7 games - but if they don't, I think Chicago will probably finish them off in 4 or 5.

JLRedWing13
06-01-2010, 11:28 AM
Mike Richards NEEDED to score on that breakaway. Philly's top line is being completely neutralized, and while Chicago's top line is as well, it's the depth of the Hawks and Niemi's goaltending that's getting it done.

You're not in trouble in a series until you lose on home ice though....

Because the NHL playoffs have been 100 times more competitive and filled with huge upsets (including a team coming back from 3-0 deficit, which has only been done a few times in the history of professional sports), and because the two teams in the finals haven't won a Cup in 49 years and 35 years respectively, which is a hell of a lot more exciting than the Celtics and Lakers facing off for the umpteenth time.

Well, it's do-or-die for the Flyers tonight. Obviously it's not a potential elimination game. If they lose tonight, they're probably going to lose the series within 5 games. If they lost tonight and found a way to win the next four, it would be the most epic comeback in sports history. But it's not gonna happen.
