I'll be seeing the mighty Maiden at the Garden it seems. Imma try and get real shitty tickets so I don't spend that much $$$. I'd love to go all out, but I'm a college student. Metal shows can't be everything my cash goes to.

Maiden33
03-04-2010, 12:12 PM
Well played, sirs. Fucking excellent support, all things considered. I'm hoping this means DT might pull-out a more traditional/old school type of set. Would love to see some older stuff.

Kinda upset with the fact that they're not doing Izod OR Susquehanna Bank Arts Center - but I guess you take what you get. At least the floor at the Garden should be GA and work out nicely. Maybe I'll do cheap tickets (lawn probably) for PNC as well.

Also, more time till tickets than I expected - so a win there. I might be able to save my ass after all.

If this follows typical Maiden rates, good tickets for most shows will set you back $75 + charges. I'd say tickets will probably range from about $35 to $75, with probably 2 price levels in between.

So this might be the last Maiden album, huh.

This WILL be the final studio album. Steve has always said Maiden would do 15 studio albums ... and this is the one.

Iron Maiden - 1st Studio Album
Live After Death - 1st Live Album
Seventh Son - 7th Studio Album
The X Factor - 10th Studio Album
Virtual XI - 11th Studio Album
Brave New World - 'New' Line Up (Bruce & Adrian return)
Somewhere Back In Time - A return to the old days!
The Final Frontier - 15th and Final Studio Album :light:

Now that I've calmed down a bit, this is absolutely ideal. I never would have expected they would get such a fantastic opener, and Dream Theater belong as an opening band if you ask me. Headlining sets make them think people want to hear them jam and do solos forever. Opening for Maiden I think they'll choose a great setlist.

Alrighty, after some quick calculations I know which shows I'm doing this summer:

Sun 7/11 Holmdel, NJ - PNC
Mon 7/12 New York, NY - Madison Square Garden
Wed 7/14 Pittsburgh, PA - First Niagra Pavilion
Thu 7/15 Cleveland, OH - Blossom Music Center
Tue 7/20 Washington D.C. - Jiffy Lube Live

The DC (technically VA) show is at the same venue that I saw my first Maiden show at back in 05. I'll be taking my 10 year old brother and it'll be his first Maiden show. I'm never gonna get to share a Maiden live experiance with my kids so this will be a very special show for me. July will be amazing!:fist:

Hmmmm... no MA date, but maybe, just maybe I'll find my way down to Jersey. Definitely if I can con someone into coming with me.

This might be a silly question, but whatever. Since this is likely to be the final album, how many more tours do you think Maiden will do? I don't know the standard for an "ending" band.

If I were to guess, speaking for U.S. tours only, this is probably the fourth to last. This one, an album tour, a second leg of the album tour or a hits tour, then a farewell tour.

Maiden33
03-04-2010, 06:06 PM
Son of a bitch, if those ticket prices are legit, my suspicion about Dream Theater being involved driving up the ticket prices was dead on. I expected about $75 or $80 + charges for good tickets, but $120? Seriously? That's ridiculous. The worst part is that I'm not even considering stepping out now - and that's why Maiden can do this. They know that they could charge $150 a ticket and most of their fans would pay it.

DethMaiden

Honestly that's just ridiculous. I'm not threatening to not go, but if they're going to charge that much for tickets, I honestly hope the tickets don't sell very well. Yeah, I know - it's ridiculous to wish bad fortune upon them, but it's not right to take advantage of your fans' dedication.

Just a thought - I recently heard about a group on Facebook that organized a boycott of a Metallica show because tickets were absurdly expensive - and they actually were able to force them to bring prices down.

Yeah, I've heard about that Metallica thing. I'm going to try and not jump to any conclusions before all the prices are out. Ticketmaster makes mistakes, especially two weeks before they even go on sale. Hell, one of the Canadian shows on there has a price of $0.00. Plus, it wouldn't be like them to charge so much. Weren't most tickets to the SBIT tour $70 to $90?

Interesting if true!

I don't buy it, mainly because of one thing.

In 29 previous years, Maiden has never produced a song written by more than one guitarist. Two of these tracks claim to be written by two guitarists, so naturally I'm quite doubtful.

If true, I am both excited and a little weirded out. I do truly hope this album ends with a big epic, something over ten minutes - and this would confirm that. Some of these titles are kind of cool, but some of them are also bleh. As I said, I doubt it's true, but if it is - neat.

If true, I am both excited and a little weirded out. I do truly hope this album ends with a big epic, something over ten minutes - and this would confirm that.

Metallica and Dream Theater make me worry about a band writing long songs for the sake of being long.

This. Like half of Bruce's songs are about space, and they're really solid lyrically.

Also, I don't buy this for a second. It won't have only eight tracks, and frankly the first track has a broken English title and this is a Bulgarian website. Wishful thinking.

Well... it could either be a typo, missing a word - or it could be "Beyond - The Eyes Can See", makes sense, not broken English.

Eight tracks is believable, certainly in light of how fast they completed it. I expect it to be ten tracks, but who knows, maybe they broke the mold. I wouldn't be floored to find out it is 8 tracks.

Nevertheless - I still think this is wrong. We're far along enough in the process that the titles and credits could be out there, but I don't expect an announcement for about 2 months or so most likely. My biggest reason to call bullshit is the writing credits thing. Maybe after years and years they changed up their writing habits, but I'm not expecting it.

There's obviously tons of great 60+ albums but for the most part bands don't have 60 minutes worth of interesting things to say every couple years and I'd rather they just give us as much as actually inspired.

Rounding to the nearest 5 minutes I would say 55 minutes is the perfect album length. It's long enough to satiate you and feel epic (albums like Reign in Blood are awesome too, but that one pretty much just makes me want to throw on another Slayer album immediately after), while still not risking the dragging feeling and obeying the general rule of shorter being better. :D

That said, one 75 minute album is better than a two-40-minute-disc double album by a stretch so long it isn't even funny. :bouville:

Word. I agree with everything you just said. Naturally I don't believe there's any black and white "rule" regarding album length, some of my favorites are super-long single discs (Savatage's "Streets" is 72 minutes), and a few are on the short side. But I think the time and explanation you give are pretty much dead on.

I don't know about that one, I think they'll get an hour. Maiden typically does an hour and 45 mins. That would only be 15 mins longer than their opener? I really don't see that happening.

Also, i'm planning on going to the Pittsburgh show. It says the show time is at 730. So that gives DT about an hour to play and gets Maiden out by 9 o'clock, so they can be off by the 11 pm curfew that a lot of the larger venues have.

Maiden33
03-15-2010, 04:50 PM
It has been confirmed that Dream Theater are playing 50 minutes, which I think is pretty much the right amount. Any more than an hour would be silly - it's not a double headliner and Maiden only do about an hour and 45 minutes.

I love Dream Theater, but this shouldn't be a co-headliner, and even the guys in DT would more than agree. Maiden is about 5-10x more popular (though DT are doing quite well for themselves), not to mention the absolute legacy and respect attached to Maiden.

I think the billing is just as it should be, couldn't be happier really.

TonyD

Some of us spend money supporting other bands and don't think lightly of just dropping $100+ on a ticket.

I don't think the tickets are vastly over-priced, but they are about 3x more expensive than I'm used to paying, and I average about 15 shows in a year from all sorts of bands. Also, just kind of inconvenient being that there was no concrete info this tour was even happening until about a month ago, and they just expect people to pull this sort of money out of their asses if they want good tickets.

Also, you're one of the few adults here, and thusly probably one of the few actually making a decent amount of money. Most of us are college-aged students working part-time, seasonal, or no jobs at all.

Finishing a BS in maths/economics. I'm applying to grad school soon, hopefully I can get some kind of aid.

Are you from LA? This is my second year at SC and Los Angeles, and it's really different from where I grew up (NYC). Shame I haven't met any metalheads in class though.

Metalheads at USC?? Forget it!

I'm from India .. came here in fall 2007 to start the masters program at SC. But yeah since then, LA is the only city I've lived in, and I really never want to move out of here :)

I saw a guy in a Slayer shirt the other day. :D

Without a car you're dead. Luckily my aunt is giving me her car next semester, so that's fine. Are you working in silicon valley then?

I don't really agree with that. 170 shows without a car :P

And no I'm not working in silicon valley. I work in a small but growing IT firm in El Segundo.

How is it possible to get from Fig to San Bernadino without a car though? No way public transport is gonna work, especially on the way back.

Bah, got to find a way to get there. I've never seen Maiden before, and with the retirement coming up, gotta treasure every chance.

Yes! They did one from DOD in the GMETID tour.

I see. Well its possible then. And yeah the 'last four albums' should mean TFF, AMOLAD, DOD and BNW. Has to be. Otherwise, it would have to be AMOLAD, DOD, BNW and Virtual XI right?

Fe Maiden
05-14-2010, 12:36 PM
Ugh, I hope they don't mean VXI with the exception of a very few songs.

My guess if what Nicko hints to is correct is:

3 or 4 from BNW
3 from DOD
4 from AMOLAD
1 or 2 from TFF

4 or 5 "classics"

Maybe 5 years ago I might have been excited about this, but now...

Ballsy move though (unlike the AMOLAD tour).

Actually, I find it kind of irritating that the first 4 albums get an exclusive setlist, the reunion albums get an exclusive setlist, but the stuff in between has to share a room with the classics.

TonyD
05-14-2010, 03:13 PM
It doesn't sound like it's gonna be exclusive, more like SBIT

Maybe 5 years ago I would've been  about this, but now
I'll have to peek the set list the night it comes out, might even sell my tickets.

I dunno, I would say AMOLAD tour was Maiden's ballsiest move yet (not best), but I don't really see what makes it un-ballsy- pissed off a lot of people haha.

And that last point there... I totally fucking agree. Powerslave through 7th Son are 3 of my 4 favorite Maiden albums, and as awesome as the SBIT tour was, it's kinda fucked that they didn't get the awesome exclusivity that the first four albums did... Though I'm not totally sure if this reunion setlist is gonna be exclusive or not so it's really just the Early Days four so far.

rjturtle9

I really don't think this tour is gonna be exclusive to the last 4 albums, they will probably just play a crap load of songs from those albums, with the standard hits they always do. maybe a surprise or 2 from their other albums?

Last three albums (obviously can't say anything about TFF yet) are just as good or better than most of the "classic" stuff.

I only really want to see BNW stuff of the new era, but I REALLLLY want to see BNW stuff as I think it's superior to a lot of their old work, so I'm pretty neutral about this, kinda what I expected.
Just hope not too much DoD or Blaze era.

Very fucking excited for this. If they do Paschendale and Ghost of the Navigator they'll hit my two favorite songs from outside of the 1982-1988 era, and I think it's pretty likely that they would. Good on you, Maiden.

Wizzbang11

Ghost of the Navigator

That's my second favorite Maiden song of any era, that would make the show for me.
Fingers crossed.
