I finally got around to listening to Cephalic Carnage's Misled by Certainty, and it was a pretty big disappointment. There were a couple songs I liked, but most of it bored me. After I finished the CD I listened to Xenosapien, which of course is still amazing.

The new Decrepit Birth is another album that is coming at the tech-death approach from a very similar angle, and I think they did a helluva lot better job than Cephalic did this year. At least Polarity has some decent grooves on it that you can sink your teeth into and headbang along with - Misled by Certainty just seems like "super-fast and ultra-clean for the sake of super-fast and ultra-clean" to me.

That's Blind Guardian's thing. There is no power metal band with a bigger non-power metal fan fan base than BG.

i've been listening to The Ghost Inside's Returners a lot lately. it's melodic hardcore and maybe even a bit brocore-ish but i'm loving this cd. great melodies and messages. probably one of my favorites of 2010.

A few "late to the party" albums I've really enjoyed:

Anthriel - The Pathway (Amazing debut album, Symphony X-inspired Prog Metal)
SoulSpell - The Labyrinth of Truths (Great rock opera-y type stuff with a bunch of cool guest vocalists)
Star One - Victims of the Modern Age (Just awesome Progressive Metal)
Firewind - Days of Defiance (A bit less than I was expecting but still a half-dozen tracks I really, really like - also this is just one of those sorts of bands I enjoy, regardless or whether or not they're really trying to write outside the box)

With these 4 + Allen/Lande - The Showdown, I really need to redo my top 20 list soon.

Also, still really waiting on Powerworld - Human Parasite. And Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape (December 3rd).

If Pagan's Mind and Symphony X get their albums out this year, I'm sure I will love them.

The new Star One was really good. Want to check out the new Firewind, and I think after Atheist & God Dethroned everything I wanted to hear this year will be out unless the new Inmoria or Wolverine albums come out. I think the last estimation on the Pagan's Mind album was February/March because they're looking for a label.

I don't know if you'd be into it, but check out the new Spiritual Beggars. You might like it. The vocals are done by the guy from Firewind, and it kind of has a traditional metal feel to it.

Unless there's some more albums that I'm not aware of *which could be* the only two albums left I'm looking forward to are Atheist's Jupiter, and GWAR's Bloody Pit Of Horror. And neither of those will reach number one. Top 20? Sure, at least Atheist will.

Nat has some great recommendations there. Howl in particular have slowly moved up my list every time I listen to it. I know some people won't even give it a listen but the New Deftones cd is incredible. I listen to everything and mostly prefer speed metal/thrash stuff but that cd is one of the best cd's I've heard in the last 10 years. I absolutely hated their last cd so I understand people writing them off but I'm glad I was open-minded enough to get the new cd. Sometimes simplifying things makes a huge difference...

Personally I think 2010 has destroyed 2009 but I'm sure I'm in the minority with that opinion on here. I can literally make a Top 100 this year and I doubt I could have made a Top 50 last year.

Yes.

So, I have always kind of disliked this rule, but this year it really irritates me because of the new Heathen CD. It was released at the end of December last year in Japan. Even if someone pre-ordered it they probably would not have received it before the end of the year. (Also, the price would be very expensive to import it from Japan.) It wasn't released in the U.S. until February of this year. So, it would have been virtually impossible for anyone to vote for it last year and according to this rule we can't vote for it this year. It is a great disc and deserves to be included.

I demand justice!

01 Avantasia - The Wicked Symphony
02 Silent Call - Greed
03 Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape
04 Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time
05 Labyrinth - Return to Heaven Denied II
06 Allen / Lande - The Revenge
07 Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
08 Wuthering Heights - Salt
09 Vanden Plas - The Seraphic Clockwork
10 Powerworld - Human Parasite
11 Dreyelands - Rooms of Revelation
12 Avantasia - Angel of Babylon
13 Sinbreed - When Worlds Collide
14 Anthriel - The Pathway
15 White Wizzard - Over the Top
16 Star One - Victims of the Modern Age
17 SoulSpell - The Labyrinth of Truths
18 Royal Hunt - X
19 Triosphere - The Road Less Travelled
20 Tarot - Gravity of Light

Such little difference separates most of these for me that a ranking is almost pointless. New Seventh Wonder definitely has potential to eventually claim the #1 spot, but I haven't listened to it enough yet.

The new Halford is not better than the new Maiden. Something went wrong on the new Halford album where are the heavy songs and the highpitched vocals from the first two halford albums. The only good song on that album is The Mower.

Totally agree about Halford. I'd say Made of Metal is one of the worst things Rob has ever recorded. I'm not trying to excessively rip on it and I know people have different tastes but I honestly can't understand how someone can enjoy that album outside of a few decent tracks (Till The Day I Die, The Mower, Heartless, Undisputed, We Own The Night).

The new Halford is not better than the new Maiden. Something went wrong on the new Halford album where are the heavy songs and the highpitched vocals from the first two halford albums. The only good song on that album is The Mower.

It's not bad because it's not heavy, it's bad because the songs are cheesy, bland, and just plain unexciting.

i'm not the biggest thrash fan out there but holy fuck Heathen's Evolution of Chaos is freaking amazing. the guy's voice brings something new to the table and doesn't sound like the average thrash voice. this def makes my top 10.

Yes the songs are cheesy and bland. I was hoping it would be heavy with high pitched vocals like the first two. The Mower gave me high hopes, but it was a let down.

Listening to Triptykon right now, it's good.

As of right now, my list is looking something like this:

01 Avantasia - The Wicked Symphony
02 Silent Call - Greed
03 Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape
04 Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time
05 Labyrinth - Return to Heaven Denied II
06 Allen / Lande - The Revenge
07 Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
08 Wuthering Heights - Salt
09 Vanden Plas - The Seraphic Clockwork
10 Powerworld - Human Parasite
11 Dreyelands - Rooms of Revelation
12 Avantasia - Angel of Babylon
13 Sinbreed - When Worlds Collide
14 Anthriel - The Pathway
15 White Wizzard - Over the Top
16 Star One - Victims of the Modern Age
17 SoulSpell - The Labyrinth of Truths
18 Royal Hunt - X
19 Triosphere - The Road Less Travelled
20 Tarot - Gravity of Light

Such little difference separates most of these for me that a ranking is almost pointless. New Seventh Wonder definitely has potential to eventually claim the #1 spot, but I haven't listened to it enough yet.
No firewind? this surprises me, as much of a fan as I thought you to be?

and, isn't this years allen/lande album called the showdown

Yeah, definitely my bad on the Allen/Lande CD, it is The Showdown. I must not have been paying attention when I typed it.

As for the Firewind, it would be one of about 5 runner-ups to my list. I love them, but I can't help but think the new album was really pedestrian. There's only like 5 or 6 songs I really really like and want to listen to. Some OK stuff, and some definite filler.

My new favorite release of 2010, hands down, goes to Oceano. There's no deathcore album that can top Contagion. I thought I'd download it just for the lulz, but I was totally blown away and as embarrassing as that should be to admit, I feel no shame. It's like they turned up their brutality level to 150%. You may be asking yourself, "How is this possible?" It just fucking is. It's so brutal I can't explain the epic brutalness taking place. The breakdowns raped my virgin ears and had me uncontrollably headbanging. Adam's vocals sound like cute farm animals being tortured to their deaths. The guitars sound like machines crushing the bones of small children. The blast beats are more intense than anything George Kollias (of Nile) could pull off. You best pick this shit up, bros. You have to experience it for yourself to truly understand how incredibly brutal this shit is. The feeling it gives me is most comparable to the time I took the biggest shit of my life. It's just that good.

On topic and not in jest: new Enslaved is fucking great, definitely took me by surprise because I'm not the hugest fan of their stuff from the last decade even though I appreciate it. I think this one has a lot more of an "Opeth doing black metal" vibe, which is obviously fine by me. :D

I think I've heard every 2010 album I planned to hear (I can be pretty sure 2-3 will pop up by year's end, but a of now, I'm pretty much done with what I was looking forward to). So I'm gonna determine my definite top 25-ish of those, and, with the exception of the few that I've listened to more than enough to not need review of, will be sitting back down with them all and giving them proper attention again so I can better determine the year-end list.

I'm really liking the new Star One - the title track in particular is phenomenal. I'm definitely seeing this in my Top 10. Shining - Blackjazz is weird as fuck, but I'm really digging it, so that may rank high as well.

Actively avoiding the Seventh Wonder leak, though I've heard a few tracks via live videos and Internet radio and asdkfjads;f I want iiiiit. Going to give The Shadow Theory a spin when it comes out, and maybe the new Therion, and I think that'll wrap it up for me this year.

I had to make a list under pressure to submit to the student newspaper I work for today for compiling our staff lists, and I'm pretty happy with it. I'll probably start writing reviews for those ten albums and throw up my end-of-year thread before too long. Gonna wait to make my top ten performances of 2010 list until after the 12/30 Clutch/Kylesa show, for obvious reasons.

It's not an album, but you should check out Deafheaven's demo. A lot of bands are really searching for their niche in that blackier Alcest sort of place, and I think Deafheaven have found it. It seems right up your alley.

Ha, I'm not ready to make the live performance list yet...three shows yet with acts that can definitely make a run at my top ten. Working on the albums one now though, I turned in my official list last week to the student paper I work for and changing it would bum me out so I'm gonna say I'm satisfied with it. I probably won't list my live ones till the end of the year, because I believe Agalloch could make the top 5, so I'll hold off. A certain British band is a lock though.

I still have to listen to a few albums towards the back of my list to make sure I'm not misplacing anything, then I'll run through all top 10 tomorrow. I don't know why I love this list-making, but it's a ton of fun.
