That's good news, not that I expected it to be anything but good, but I'll check it out. Looking forward to the new album!

Lawless Darkness is definitely Top 5 material. Very solid album.

EDIT: Just listened to A Voice in the Dark. Sounds like a cross of the styles on Imaginations from the Other Side and A Twist in the Myth. And I think that is awesome.

Clockwork by Angelus Apatrida is definitely in the running for thrash album of 2010.

The new one by Korzus is great too.

I've only heard three albums from this year so my top three would be:

1. Ozzy - Scream
2. Scorpions - Sting in the Tail
3. Avantasia - The Wicked Symphony

Ozzy is great, the other two are good.

I still need to hear:

Blaze Bayley - Promise and Terror
High on Fire - Snakes for the Divine
Burzum - Belus
Avantasia - Angel of Babylon
Cynic - Re-Traced
Judas Priest - British Steel DVD and live album

Haha I figured I would get that reaction. I just can't listen to TWS without it getting somewhat boring after repeated listens. It's really good when I break it out every few weeks though.

I just don't know what to say. I think I like it more almost every time I listen to it, and aside from 2 questionable-ish tracks, I think they're all excellent songs. I think it's probably the best album of the entire trilogy. Slight notch above The Scarecrow. The title track is my "Song of the Year" thus far.

Mid-year update after hearing 35 records. Top ten I thought reasonably hard about, the rest is only very roughly ranked.

1. Alcest - Écailles de Lune
2. Ludicra - The Tenant
3. Watain - Lawless Darkness
4. Off With Their Heads - In Desolation
5. Howl - Full of Hell
6. Nevermore - The Obsidian Conspiracy
7. Lair of the Minotaur - Evil Power
8. Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave
9. Coffinworm - When All Became None
10. Overkill - Ironbound
--
Lightning Swords of Death - The Extra Dimensional Wound
Coheed and Cambria - Year of the Black Rainbow
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Mojo
Landmine Marathon - Sovereign Descent
Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones
Ihsahn - After
Wuthering Heights - Salt
Slash - Slash
Willie Nelson - Country Music
Mouth of the Architect - The Violence Beneath
A Silver Mt. Zion - Kollaps Tradixionales
Red Sparowes - The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer
Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me
White Wizzard - Over the Top
Burzum - Belus
Skyforger - Kurbads
Acrassicauda - Only the Dead See the End of the War
Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe 2
Black Tusk - Taste the Sin
HIM - Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice
Peter Gabriel - Scratch My Back
Blood of Kingu - Sun in the House of the Scorpion
Fear Factory - Mechanize
Abigor - Time Is the Sulphur in the Veins of the Saint
Scorpions - Sting in the Tail

Congratulations on worst album of the year so far, Scorpions! Way to go out on bottom!

Also, (at minimum) the bottom half of my top 10 is probably irrelevant because the new albums by the following bands I fully expect to be face-melting top 10 candidates: Lantlos (heard three or four songs already, expect it to be top 5 material), The Ocean (I'm *this close* to accepting the vocals and thinking that this is the perfect fusion of Isis and BTBAM, thus making it a goddamn amazing album), Weedeater (last one was great, who's to say this one won't be even better?), Iron Maiden (duh), Rush (duh), Man's Gin (could be dark horse album of the year candidate), Blind Guardian (hey, just maybe), and Arcade Fire (if it reminds me of why I liked their first two so much).

My favorite of the year so far is The Menzingers' Chamberlain Waits. Quasi's American Gong is a very close second. Others that I really like:
Off With Their Heads- In Desolation
The Gaslight Anthem- American Slang
The Hold Steady- Heaven Is Whenver
Murder By Death- Good Morning, Magpie
She & Him- Volume 2

Been kind of a slow year so far. Stuff I'm looking forward to later on is Final Frontier (duh), new Bad Religion, new Arcade Fire, and Corin Tucker's solo album. Maybe Lemuria? I heard they were working on their new full-length, but I don't know if that will be out this year.

I've only listened to it once, but I'm liking Soilwork's the Panic Broadcast. I liked Sworn to a great divide, but I didn't think it sounded enough like how I would expect soilwork to sound, especially with the different guitar tone they used on that one. This one sounds more like their other albums. Although I've only listened once, so.

I could get behind this statement. figure number 5 is my favorite soilwork album up there with natural born chaos, so not as good as those, but its good. as I said I liked STAGD but, it to me was so much different than the other records it was hard to compare them.

To anyone still wondering about the upcoming Torche release:

Songs for Singles is an EP by the American rock band Torche. The album will be released on September 21, 2010 through Hydra Head Records. It's the first Torche release to not feature guitarist Juan Montoya.

Torche was originally planning on writing their third full-length album, and follow up to 2008's Meanderthal, but ended up releasing an EP of songs they were working on as Songs for Singles instead. The group quickly wrote and recorded the music for about 12 tracks for an album, but struggled to write lyrics and record vocals for the songs.

According to bassist Jonathan Nuñez, the music was too "full," and when Torche tried to incorporate vocals, "[...] It was like, 'Whoa.' It was kind of overwhelming a little bit." The group had to strip the songs down to a more simplified arrangement to fit in the vocal tracks, and in the process, decided on releasing a short EP in the interest of time. Some of the songs written during these recording sessions that didn't end up on Songs for Singles are expected to be released on their following studio album.

Songs for Singles was self-produced by the band members themselves in order to achieve a more raw sound. Nuñez stated that their goal during production was to create, "Something that connects a little more to what we feel it should sound like, and what it will hopefully sound like live."

The opening track "U.F.O." was previously released on a free Hydra Head Records downloadable sampler. However, this early version jokingly contained David Lee Roth's vocal track from Van Halen's 1978 single "Runnin' with the Devil." The version of "U.F.O." on Songs for Singles will not feature Roth's vocals.

I care. I go to some shows at Jaxx and have caught some great local openers there. I've heard the name but never seen them. They playing anytime soon?

:wow: Yeah their great! Although Jaxx is a couple hours away, they may have played their. Here's a link of them (this 1 isn't on the LP though) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiT7lYKTfeE. And their myspace link that includes national tour dates, check em out if they come close! Theres a date in Richmond and Harrisonburg http://www.myspace.com/interarmametal

Good chance they did. Jay used to bring in local acts from as far away as Penn. I knew a guy in a Pennsylvania metal band Winterfell and they played Jaxx at least once when I was there but I think they played a couple times. So if they are good and even relatively local, chances are they have played the Jaxx.

In terms of this year I was very excited about this year. I knew we would be getting new Nevermore, Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian, Pain of Salvation, Therion and Iced Earth (though who knows, Schaffer doesn't seem to care to tell us jack shit anymore about whats going on with the band). Nevermore's is the only one thats actually come out so far and it was very good but no "This Godless Endeavor". The samples from the BG album sound absolutely fantastic. Maiden...less so. Therion can always be counted on for something absolutely mind blowing and the only track I've heard from the new album (Kali Yuga III) was amazing. And again who knows with Iced Earth. Schaffer is one of the best guitarists out there but he can be downright lazy with his song writing. And Pain of Salvation, you never really know what you will get with them. Couple be amazing, could be awful but its always interesting. I didn't like the EP at all but the stuff from the album sounds great. It definitely sounds like Pain of Salvation has all but shed any vestiges of being a prog metal act and moved into simply prog rock.

I'm not sure if I already posted in this thread but my favourite albums of the year so far:

Deftones - Diamond Eyes
Dark Tranquillity - We are the Void

Also digging the new Korn a lot more with each listen, Soilwork's latest is decent. I've only listened to Nevermore and 36 Crazyfists' new albums once each. So yeah, we'll see how the rest pan out.

Some other Richmond locals you should look out for include Battlemaster, Neckbrace, Cannabis Corpse (although they got pretty popular in the underground), Bastard Sapling, Cough, Street Pizza, and my friend's recently formed band, Warshield.

Right now I'm also really digging:

Hooded Menace - Never Cross the Dead

The Grotesquery - Tales of the Coffin Born

Istapp - Blekinge

And I have to give some other stuff like the new Severe Torture, Interment, Revolting, Decrepitaph, and Vasaelth a few more listens to get a better opinion about them.

So far for me I really like

Deftones - Diamons Eyes
Watain - Lawless Darkness
Immolation - Majesty & Decay
Red Sparowes - The Fear is...
Orphaned Land - The Neverending way...
Khoma - A Final Storm

And Jorn - Dio and Unleashed - Across The Open Sea is also fun to listen to

Soulfly - Omen needs a few more listens before I can decide if it´s really good. But it sounds promising

I think Bison is (and always has been) much more heavily influenced in equal parts by sludge / doom bands like High on Fire and Eyehategod, and stoner metal bands such as Sleep, Wolfmother and The Sword to be accused of ripping off Mastodon. I mean, I'm sure the Bison guys probably appreciate Mastodon for their more progressive elements - for example, I complimented Jim Farwell on the Burst shirt he was wearing when I met him...and Burst are the Swedish version of Mastodon, in my mind - but I certainly don't think they were trying to make a carbon copy of Remission when they wrote Dark Ages. I know for SURE that they are at the very least more confident in their own songwriting ability than that.

Well, when I was listening to it, I immediately knew I had heard it before. Remission came to mind first, but I may have picked the wrong album/band.

....

...I'm listening to it right now, and not only does it sound nothing like Remission, it sounds really original, as well. Or at the very least, they're taking influences from ALL over the board.
At first I thought that I had mistaken High On Fire for Mastodon, but strangely enough, I didn't hear many more High on Fire riffs after that...

Need to hear Blind Guardian, Torche, Winterfylleth, Slough Feg, Cephalic Carnage, East of the Wall, Julie Christmas, and AtheistI just found out about the release date for Jupiter (which is Nov. 9, for those who are interested), and the album art looks like it might be cool, but I can't find a large photo of it. The track listing has an interesting entry:

02. Fictitious Glide
03. Fraudulent Cloth
04. Live And Live Again
05. Faux King Christ
06. Tortoise The Titan
07. When The Beast

That title for track five is fucking brilliant. :fist:

...but anyway, the main purpose for my post was to ask if you've heard anything in terms of a release date for "The Bad Wife"? That album has been on my radar screen for at least two years, and all I've heard of recent is that the release is now supposed to be sometime this fall. Still no track listing, album art, sample tracks (except for her cover of "If You Go Away", which has been posted for a long time, and might not even be on the new album)...nothing. She is notoriously silent when it comes to sharing news for upcoming work. I had no idea she had recently written a book, "The Scribbles and Scrapes of Amy Anyone: A Multiple Personality Autobiography" - I'll bet it's a hoot.

I also read an interesting quote from a recent interview with her:

Christmas -- that's her middle name, since she was born on Jesus' birthday, reveal[s] that, "my mother went into labor on Christmas Eve and she and my father sat in a warm bathtub drinking tequila to delay birth; I come from a huge Irish-American family, and I was born drunk."

Yeah, it seriously is. I was very, very, very impressed, and metal album covers don't typically do that for me anymore. I think my list is gonna have to make some serious room for the new Atheist - which Kelly is calling a return to the Unquestionable Presence sound.

Totally forgot Atheist were coming out with a new one this year. Looking forward to that as well.

On first listens, I like Kamelot's new one much more than Ghost Opera (and I liked GO, too), and I'm really digging the new Angra. Highly recommend it to the Prog/Power Metal fans on here, if you haven't checked it out.

Listening to Kiske/Somerville now, and it's pretty good. Nothing spectacular, pretty basic Metal/Hard Rock, but it has some nice hooks, and the vocal pairing is perfect. Highly doubt it's Top 10 material unless it does some serious growing on me, but Top 20 maybe.

Has anyone heard the new Athiest yet, even samples? If not, it's pretty hard to say what the new album will sound like.

I saw Atheist last year *actually on Labor Day it will have been a full year* and I gotta say that they sounded just as badass asa they ever have. It sucks now that Tony Choy is gone, but I'll reserve judgement till the album comes out.

What MPF and treghet said. How are you going to base what their new album will sound like on a guess from someone, when they haven't so much as played a note from the new album live or released a single song? It's not like you got that from hearing the seventeen-year-old Elements, did you? So what the fuck is your point?

If you look at it coming out in 2009, it's the best damn Thrash album of 2009. in 2010. Right now it's a 3 way tie from me. Death Angel/Overkill/Heathen.

Either of those 3 albums rightfully deserve that title, there is no wrong choice.

The Michael Kiske / Amanda Somerville album has been easily one of the biggest pleasant surprises of the year for me. I'm not crazy about either of them usually, so them doing a vocally driven duet album, on paper, is not a great idea for me. Also, I figured it'd be very little metal and a whole lot of pop. I am very happy to be proven wrong.

I can't see much changing between now and the end of the year, unless something else blows me away.

Thanks buddy.

I couldn't really notice any difference between the discs. As far as sound goes I didn't pick up on any funny sounding stuff, except for the slow part of The Lotus Eater, where the guitars sound a little strange, but I think that might have been intentional.

Best Punk Album:

Bad Religion: The Dissent Of Man
I was very pleasantly surprised by how much better it was than New Maps of Hell. I really love this record.

I started out thinking this year would be awfully stale, but there's been a bunch of stuff coming out in the last couple weeks that's been excellent (Bad Religion, Jimmy Eat World, Fake Problems, Corin Tucker), as well as some that are coming out in the next couple months (None More Black (!!), Lemuria). Doing a top 10 for this year is going to be much, much harder than I orginally thought.

Yeah, WTF. I just downloaded this and it's actually pretty good. Weird ass surprise.

Thanks, yeah I went ahead and bought the mp3 album, and it sounds good, the version I had had before was downloaded, but ther were some really bad problems with it so much that I wanted to make sure it wasn't a release issue rather than just a shitty rip quality, before I went and bought it.

Okay, only on my second listen, but Dawnbringer's "Nucleus" is AOTY material. Instantly in my top five, might even grow on me. Check it out if you like old school metal that isn't just ripping off other old school metal. Like Slough Feg but in a different way.

Not many more important releases to go for me, so I'll probably settle on a list fairly soon. Just got the new Helloween, but don't expect that to get anywhere close.

Because I can't be bothered to look back, do EPs count?

They did in my reign, but Manks said something about they don't.

Why is that, exactly, Manky?

I just checked. I thought it didn't, but EP's and splits ARE eligible for year end lists.

Apparently everyone is bitching about it, I think it rules.
I'm even going as far as to say better than Shitfun and a lot of Acts.
Mutant Village (what I believe to be the best track) sounds like a lost song off Mental Funeral, it's that good.

Also, to anyone who likes Impetigo or Razorback Records type stuff, get Tombstones-Not for the Squeemish now! It's awesome! Finally Stevo's back singing a whole album.

Listened to the new Terror and Abigail Williams records in the past few days. Both are good and worth checking out.

Triptykon - The Prolonging
Nachtmystium - High on Hate
Enslaved - Waruun
High on Fire - Bastard Samurai

Orphaned Land - Barakah (or The Path)
The Sword - Arrows in the Dark

Black Label Society - Overlord

Sure, I'll do mine like this for the hell of it:

Alcest - Écailles de Lune (Part 1)
Ludicra - Clean White Void
Iron Maiden - Starblind
Dawnbringer - Swing Hard
Watain - Reaping Death
Blind Guardian - Sacred Worlds
Man's Gin - Nuclear Ambition Part 2
The Ocean - The Origin of God
Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
Off With Their Heads - Clear the Air

EDIT: In most of these cases it's unclear what my favorite truly is. And bizarrely, in four of these cases, I was forced to pick one song from a two-song suite that is the album's highlight.

Yeah, this. It's quite the disappointment I guess. To follow up Damage Done, Character, and Fiction with it just makes it seem much worse by comparison, but it's still quite a solid album. It just doesn't stand out the way truly awesome albums do.

Therion-Dinn
Blind Guardian-Curse my Name

Nevermore-Obsidian Conspiracy
Orphaned Land-Sapiri

Soundgarden-Black Rain (questionable if this counts since it was actually recorded back during the Badmotorfinger days, it just wasn't released till this past week)
Pain of Salvation-Curiosity

14.Masterplan - Time to Be King (big disappointment for me, but I love the band so much on the whole it still fares well)
15.James Labrie - Static Impulse (took a while to click but I really like it now)
16.Ken's Dojo - Reincarnation
17.Tarot - Gravity of Light
18.Triosphere - The Road Less Traveled
19.Juvaliant - Inhuman Nature
20.Tank - War Machine (may rise)

Still waiting on a few albums that have a VERY probability of making this list. If the new Seventh Wonder album doesn't, I'll be absolutely mindblown. I predict a top 5 placement, even if it's a step down from the masterpiece Mercy Falls.

^NO Kamelot? :bouville:

Kamelot's new album was not that great at all imo it won't even make my top 10 (and I don't have a whole lot of albums to choose from). I thought Ghost Opera was a better album and I wasn't the biggest fan of that one either.
