With all of the deathcore hate going on, it led me to wonder: what are some breakdowns that you guys actually enjoy? It can be from any genre.

Personally, I find that the breakdown in Nile's "Utterances of the Crawling Dead" manages to crush me like a fucking tank every time I hear it. I wish they would play this song live :bouville:

The one in 3IOB 'Night Marauders', I get douche chills everytime just before I start headbanging :D

None.

I'm sure there are songs that I enjoy that have breakdowns, but they're the kind of breakdown that's good and helps the music because it doesn't stand out and take a commanding lead over everything else.

Proper thrash breakdowns shouldn't count for this thread :D They aren't really breakdowns either more like a switch to mid-paced easily-headbangable rhythm, not the big lurching breakdowns of deathcore and the example I mentioned.

It sucks that breakdowns are seen as a completely bad thing nowadays. If it's creative and done tastefully, a good breakdown is awesome. It's those shitty, single note, overused metal/deathcore breakdowns that are used just for the sake of hardcore dancing that suck ass.

Another one I enjoy is in Immolation's "Higher Coward". Holy fuck does it create a twisted atmosphere :rocker:

I like the one in Future Breed Machine, because I think it really fits nicely after the solo. I really like something about the one in White Walls too.

Due to my musical preferences, I have absolutely zero concept of what a "breakdown" actually is.

The one in Cryptopsy's "Benedictine Convulsions" makes me want to kill things, and the one in Incantation's "Demonic Incarnate" is quite possibly one of the scariest things i've ever heard in a metal song EVER

Tons of old school death metal is littered with breakdowns, and it sounds just great. It's the misuse of breakdowns mixed with the horrendous vocals and unoriginality that makes deathcore suck.

Suffocation, Jungle Rot, etc.

I don't hear any breakdown in that. Are you talking about ~3:20?

at 2:04 and at the end

Dunno if you could really call them "breakdowns", but if they could be considered breakdowns, then i would call them an example of a good breakdown.

The breakdown in Endless by Unearth might be my favorite ever. In this case it makes a solid song a great song.

Ohhh sweet jesus, yes! That first breakdown is awesome.

Also, if anyone listens to Darkane around here, the breakdown at the end of Wrath Connection is fucking amazing. And when I saw them live they ended their set with that breakdown, and it is possibly the best live show closer I have ever seen live. Very powerful and gets me wanting to jump around and headbang every time.

gotta agree that has to be one of my favorite breakdowns. It's an interesting breakdown in that it has some melodic stuff going on from one of the guitar players while the primary breakdown is being played by another person.

I still like the breakdown at the end of "This Glorious Nightmare" just a little bit more. :snivel: It makes me want to tear shit up. :D

EDIT: The one in the middle of "This Time Was Mine" is pretty fucking badass as well. :rocker:

CHIMAIRA has quite a few.

The breakdown at the end of "Nothing Remains" is pretty damn decent.
The chorus to "Severed" is basically a breakdown that's repeated throughout the entire song.
The song "Dead Inside" is almost just a series of kickass breakdowns fused together, with some minor riffing and melody thrown in just for kicks. It's also one of my favorite Chimaira songs ever. Ever. :rocker:

The end of Ocean Planet by Gojira
Ressurection Macabre by PestilenceYeah, I was trying to find something by Gojira but I didn't come up with anything that sounded like an "according to Hoyle" breakdown, but I think you found one. Nice.

Obviously, I concur. :D

And of course the ending section to "Deliverance" by Opeth :rocker:
