View Full Version : Favorite sub-genre of metal?

IrritatedTrout
02-22-2010, 04:26 PM
I know there may be some debate over which sub genres exist and which don't but I think I made the most non-controversial list I could.

My vote goes to heavy/traditional metal. Just to name the obvious ones, Iron Maiden, Dio, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Blaze Bayley, Ozzy, King Diamond. You can't go wrong. Not to mention stuff like Zep, Motorhead, and Rainbow sometimes get thrown into that category. Now I personally don't agree with that, but I ain't gonna complain.;)

Edit: If you think I should include grindcore, tell me and I'll edit it.

In my opinion, there are tons of mediocre sludge bands out there, but when they're good, they're REALLY good.

It was very close between thrash and heavy/traditional (which I have been listening to alot lately), but I decided on thrash as most of my favorite bands are thrash or thrash related.

SerpentineVIVIVI
02-22-2010, 05:07 PM
Thrash used to be for me, but I've found many thrash bands outside the popular ones and the once-in-a-while out there ones, it's a REALLY stale genre with one of the stupidest attitudes in metal.

I'd say melodic death metal is easily one of my favorites, if not that then straight up death metal/black metal. Folk metal/power metal definitely deserve a mention too.

Come to figure, after writing this, I really don't know. I guess for the sake pick of a choice I'd say melo death. But again, all the aforementioned are still valid.

Never thought I'd see the day, but I went with Prog Metal. Power Metal produced so many great bands and albums, but it's dead. There hasn't been a GREAT true power metal album in the past 4 years. On the other hand Prog Metal is alive and well turning out quality releases all the time. Also, power metal just can't hold my attention like it used to outside of certain bands that I will always love.

I meant 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 thus far (which has already produced a lot of albums for me, I've heard 14 already).

And I'm still not sure I'd say Twist is really GREAT. It's very, very good. But it's honestly my least favorite Blind Guardian record aside from the first two. Probably anyway. I just meant it's been 4+ years since anything has been produce that could even fathomably have a shot at a top 20-30 for the genre overall.

I just don't think any bands are producing their best work. Everyone's either already crappy, sliding downward, stagnating, or merely maintaining solid work. Blind Guardian are kinda hard to peg, because they don't produce an album more often than every 4 years. It's hard to peg a trend.

I went with prog metal. Heavy metal had its day and a ton of my favorite albums are classic metal albums, but prog metal, since its inception, has always, by definition even, thrown enough curveballs to keep producing totally unique great bands.

Very difficult to choose between thrash and doom... probably doom...

In both cases though I can't say I like the entire genre, because both have areas where death/black vocals are used, and they both suck.

Power, Prog and Trad I love, but all three have their gay sides.

Death Metal makes up about half of my music library, that's definitely my favorite genre. And about 20-25% of my library is thrash. Those are the two big genres for me. The next biggest for me is probably progressive, then heavy/classic, and then a tiny bit of black metal and grindcore.

I've acquired a taste for more progressive metal bands this year so that genre is starting to get bigger for me.

This, except I've grown out of post- at the same rate I've grown out of death. Both offer a release or two I really like per year now but it's nothing like they were for me in high school.

I'm all about black now, probably followed by interesting doom and prog.

Yeah, I guess I'm a sucker for anything post, but I prefer post-rock to post-metal beyond a shadow of a doubt, just because it seems like a far healthier genre at the moment.

I really prefer black and doom to about anything right now; just give me something with some atmosphere.

I can understand that. I get bored of it sometimes too, but I just find myself listening to certain death metal bands much more in the past few years, and I don't find myself listening to hard rock, alternative or any "core" as much.

I've found myself less and less interested in metal in general as I get older, but I think it's more of a phase. I have sort of become a little bit more interested in hip hop and I've totally swan dived into post-rock, so naturally I only have a finite amount of time to listen to them all. I think post-rock and metal will forever define my music tastes though.

The older I get, the more I prefer the more underground and extreme metal genres, like war metal, powerviolence, blackened thrash, etc. I've grown pretty tired of the seemingly stagnant "sludge metal" scene that's been hanging out for the past few years. Still some great stuff there, but I'd rather that metal just got back to its roots and being fast, evil, and heavy.

That's a really tough question. I love black, death, doom, stoner/sludge but some of my favorite music of all time is from the Nowregian black metal scene of the early-to-mid 1990's, so I guess black.

1.3 Death
1.4 Doom

...Well fuck.

I LOVE the shit out of death, thrash, doom, and sludge/stoner equally. Hell, I'm playing with both a tech-death guitarist and a stoner metal band at the moment...but if I had to choose, I'd probably say thrash. It's what got me into other metal - not counting my shitty nu-metal phase - plus it was a thrash show that made me want to be a musician, feel what a real goddamn pit was like, and see that there's more to the genre than the Big 4 (if you're curious, the show was headlined by DRI).
