Tugging at my heart-strings, this is. I really, really want to write an article or essay about this band. Together for three years, put out three releases, toured their balls off, lived the DIY ethic every fucking second of their lives, never got signed, played a genre no one else has ever even gotten close to playing, broke up, and now have no discernible legacy. It's like lightning striking the ground, they were there and they were gone. Glad I got the chance to see them three times, even if I'm the only one who remembers how great they were.

I've never heard a Blackmore solo I like. Most of them inspire me to ask the question: "WTF was he doing here?".

As I said, I have nothing but the utmost respect for Blackmore as a writer - he's one of the most influential guitarists in hard rock. But I think he sucks at soloing. I hate his tone and technique a lot.

I absolutely love this song, but the solo on this song is embarrassing. It's just random sloppy noodling with horrible tone. It just sounds like twangy fucking around with no technique or forethought whatsoever. I could site you easily 10 other Blackmore solos that I think exactly the same thing about.

Some of it is random noodling, but only at the very beginning. Do you hear those arpeggios at 2:43? And regarding his tone, you have to remember that all the nice high-gain amps like Engls and Peaveys didn't exist back then. Those old Marshalls were pretty much all there was. And he was also playing a Strat with single coils, which probably added to the twangy-ness.

All in all, I, along with most other people, would probably agree that Blackmore writes some of the best and most memorable solos that there are (Highway Star is the one that always comes to mind). If you don't like it, fine. But don't go around saying that he sucks.

Yes, I hear the arpeggios, but to me, that's a lead, not a solo. That's kind of nit-picky, but I think it counts for something. A lot of bad soloists can still play great leads (see: Jon Schaffer, Iced Earth and Oscar Dronjak, Hammerfall). It's hard to draw the line as to why, but I've realized it happens, a lot. I am really big on players who WRITE solos, and that a solo is a composition with a beginning, middle, and end - not just 35 seconds of fucking around. That's what separates people who write great and memorable solos from those who don't. And that can be said of soloists 100x more technical as well. You can have all the skill and technique in the world, but without the ear for melody and composition, your solos are going to suck.

Also, I am aware of the equipment of the time, but I am also aware that there were a lot of players that had MUCH better tone at the same period of time. This argument really only applies to Deep Purple stuff and the first two or so Rainbow albums anyway. But Blackmore's tone was still exactly the same and every bit as bad on the later Rainbow albums in 1982 and 1983. Compared to a lot of what was happening in the world of guitar playing at that point? Not really any excuse for that.

I don't know what to say, but I just don't hear it. I said in my original post, and I stick to it now - I never intended to take ANYTHING away from Blackmore in any other sense. here is not a single doubt in my mind that he's one of the most influential songwriters in metal history, and without a lot of his 70s work (mostly Rainbow), a lot of my favorite music wouldn't even exist. But that doesn't mean I equate him with great soloing. That's the end of it.

I feel sorry for you dude, some of the best solos you'll ever hear were written off the cuff, and are far more structured than any pre written material. Most of the dudes that have/had the best ears for melody and composition perform/ed improvisational solos every single time. Seriously dude, every time you talk about composition/writing/playing I almost vomit in my mouth.

Have fun blowing Frank Zappa, because that's exactly how I feel about just about all of his music.

I do recall you are the one that told me that I'm not a true fan of music because I prefer to pay to see bands play songs I know and like as opposed to them just jamming. Yeah, brilliant point of view. :tp:

Furthermore, this is just more elitist bullshit from you:

"Some of the best solos you'll ever hear"
"Most of the dudes that have/had the best ears for melody and composition"

According to who? You? The last time I checked, you weren't exactly a proven authority on the subject. And even if you were, it still wouldn't make YOUR opinion on these things acceptable as fact. :tp:

Lol, that's because good improvised solos are actually WRITTEN, like he said. It's just written in real time. This is why only really good guitarists with a thorough understanding of their instrument actually have improvised solos that don't suck. (lol slayer vs. zappa for example). It's still a completely different approach than noodling around. also

What? Seriously, apart from the awesome and blatantly bluesy instrumental, this is shit. The kind of camp '80s rock that gives camp '80s rock a bad name. We're not talking "too soft, I like heavy", this is just bad. Awful lyrics, no guitar, horrible children's-television melodies. How is this even the same guy?

I love Gary Moore too. I even like most of 'Dark Days In Paradise'. Unusual sound for him though may be, but they're good songs, which is more than can be said for his rock stuff. Which is what makes his rock stuff so disappointing. It's so... horribly generic. And has not aged well at all. It's everything I don't like in rock music. Everything about it bad. Zero redeeming features. No riffs, crap keyboards, awful lyrics, kitsch melodies.

His blues on the other hand is some of the best there is. 'After The War' rocked and was actually the first album of his I bought, then 'Scars', then the blues stuff. And at least 'Wild Frontier' isn't as bad as the first few albums...

His next album will be a rock one, and hopefully it will sound like 'Scars', otherwise, huge pass.

I was planning to skip him next week and watch him in July instead, but I might find something else to do then too. Get a burger or something.
