 I'll be jealous, that's for sure. I feel like I should be keeping an eye out for Willie gigs. I'd like to see him before he dies, and I'm pretty sure he plans to tour until the day he does.

I'm a bit late with this. Nuclear Blast put the promo out and didn't say it was available! It certainly wasn't out before the release, and they've added a bunch of other things that were out ages ago, so I figure they just decided to give everyone everything.

So, let's see... OK so far.

Yes! At least there's two of us who get the Sixx:A.M. album!

Make that three.

I'm actually quite nervous for a second one. I can half see them just making a generic modern rock album.

I would say that the chances of this are much greater than the chances of them actually making a worthy follow-up. Unfortunately.

really? I love the clean vocals on "Children of a Worthless God," but they just sound gay on this song. There were a couple of good parts, but eh... kinda hated this song, personally.

Yeah, I just know they left a couple of bits and pieces out because of time and I thought that was it. Must have just been the stuff between that and New York Don't Mean Nothing.

Either way, impressive they played the whole set. That was the night Jon busted his knee.

Yeah I saw them back in 2007, it was a real good time. I think the debut album is really great, but aside from that they haven't really produced a great album - they just have occasional great tracks on weak albums or tied up in their countless amounts of bonus tracks, b-sides, etc.

Unfortunately not. Their intention was to play the whole thing that night, and not being entirely familiar with it I didn't realise anything was missing, but Jon wanted too many other songs too, and he couldn't get around as well as normal because of his knee, so just little stuff like getting a bottle of water took longer.

I didn't get to see the printed setlist, but I'm sure at least one more song was originally on it.

Haggard had fucked everyone up earlier in the day by turning up about 10 minutes before they needed to be on stage.

The other time I saw him play some stuff off Streets was Sweden Rock 2009, thus:

City Beneath The Surface
Sirens
Through Eyes of The King
Of Rage And War
Chance
Maniacal Renderings
Tonight He Grins Again
Gutter Ballet
The Hounds >

Hall Of The Mountain King

Inside info or just speculation?

There is no inside info. It's never going to happen. The only way any one is ever going to see Savatage again is if Jon decides to go through with renaming JOP Savatage, in which case there would be a shit-storm from the fans and other former band members.

I have a whole lot of "inside info", but I'm not going to post it here out of respect for its sources, but if you want to know what I know, PM me.

In my opinion A Matter of life and Death is easily one of Maiden's three or four most consistent records. That's one of the big reasons why I like it. It doesn't have the standout jaw-dropping track I think most of their others have, but every track falls under the "very good" blanket for me.

He seems to have a very polarising voice, which I've not quite understood to be honest. I've never found it particularly offensive or even unique. I mean, I can understand why Bobby Elsworth, Vince Neil, Dave Padden, Glenn Hughes, just to pick a few out that I like, could be love-'em-or-hate-'em voices, but not Matos.

And yet, I have a friend in Brazil who is very, very good friends with Andre, and he can't stand his singing voice! Must make it awkward if he ever asks for opinions on new material.

hmm but from my experience, it seems a lot of people either love his voice or hate it, so I don't know. Personally I love his voice and I do think it is unique, so we disagree there. Matos is up there with Tobias and Jon for me. All 3 are multi talented composers and vocalists, who I just can't seem to get enough of. I'm somewhat addicted to Blitz and Mustaine as well, but it's a different type of singing, obviously. I enjoy Vince Neils voice quite a lot too, so I guess my prefences are all over the place.

ravenheart
04-27-2010, 08:23 AM
I like it too, because there's nothing to not like. He's a technically gifted singer with a good voice. It's that polarising love/hate thing I don't get with him.

Mustaine's a good example of a genuine love/hate voice. I know plenty of people who don't like high, nasaly or screechy voices, so don't like Mustaine, Neil, Axl, Coverdale, Hughes, or any of the sleaze-rock stuff. I can understand that.

But disliking, I don't know, Kiske, Rob Lowe, Jorn, Dio, lesser known ones like Johnny Gioeli, Rob Sowden, whoever. Just people who have technically accomplished, natural talent. What's not to like, even if their music is not your thing. Matos is in that group for me.

Speaking of Blitz... The Cursed? :rocker:

The only thing I've ever heard him on that I didn't like was the track he guested on on Dan Lorenzo's last solo album. Not because he sounded crap, just because he didn't fit at all.

Nuclear Blast is still leading the way in terms of the bigger players. Leaving the likes of Roadrunner, Metal Blade, Massacre and Century Media for dead.

For the smaller stuff, Doomentia, I Hate, Small Stone, Meteor City, Grooveyard, and Psychedoomelic are my favourites.

Southern Lord, Tee Pee, Napalm, Mascot/Shrapnel, Candlelight and Neurot weigh in with good stuff from time to time too.

And for the melodic stuff, AFM is kicking Frontiers ass. They just both need to sort their distribution the fuck out.

I can't really even begin to argue why I disagree with this. Yes, that stuff is good under the circumstances that a) the frontman has interesting/funny things to say and b) it doesn't ruin the atmosphere that the band is creating. For a shit-ton of bands, the entire time that they're on stage they're in the midst of a performance, and blabbing between songs would totally fuck up what they're trying to do. You wouldn't want the director of a movie coming on screen between scenes and saying "Thank you, thank you very much. This next scene is blah blah blah," and some bands play concerts in a way that is not unlike seeing a movie. Basically every black metal band ever falls under this category, and bands from a bunch of other genres that rely on atmosphere are too. So I'll let the bands decide whether they want to talk during the set or not and trust their judgment.

My point stands if I ever went to a show and the singer never said a word besides "Thank you" in the entire show (meaning not even saying anything during an encore break), I would be pissed.

It's OK to take Alcest's collective penis out of your mouth - I get it, you're in love right now. :D

 I was going to KILL Dallas Toler-Wade when I saw Nile in February. "Yeah, you guys are true metalheads, and I appreciate everyone coming out. You guys don't like any of that flavor of the week bullshit, do ya? I said, YOU GUYS DON'T LIKE ANY OF THAT FLAVOR OF THE WEEK BULLSHIT, DO YA? That's what I thought! This next one is from....ANNIHILATION...OF...THE...WHAT? That's right - ANNIHILATION OF THE WICKED!"

Jesus Christ, get on with it!

Yeah, I hate that.

I hate that thing Rob Halford does too. "Ooohhoohhooh-oh-oh!" then getting the audience to repeat it back to him for half a fucking hour.

Agree to disagree, I guess. Some of the greatest live sets I've ever seen have been totally devoid of stage banter, and the atmosphere that was created on stage would have been completely ruined by banter. These were all also sets from bands you would never, ever listen to, so I can see where we're having the disagreement.

Exactly, haha.

Now, I mean to make the distinction that I don't think it's always a good decision. Some bands are not good at it, and even when they are I don't want it to flood the show, but once in a while is good I think. I hate bands that just keep telling the crowd their fucking metal, or asking if they're fucking metal, or just dumb pointless crap. But I think the right stuff can really bring a band and their audience closer. I think Russell Allen does a great job of that at Symphony X shows. Also - none of the Edguy shows I've ever seen would've been half as enjoyable if it wasn't for Tobias Sammet's interaction - both during and between songs. They help make their live show what it is.

But yeah, ultimately obviously I'm never going to see your perspective on this, because I would never listen to any of the bands that fall under that category for you.

Be quiet. :D

I've never seen Alice Cooper, but I'm doubting I'd think his shows suck. As I just said in my last post - as with virtually anything else, extremes aren't really the answer. From what I understand Cooper does a theatrical show. Any time anyone has an onstage "persona" that acting like their normal self would detract from, obviously the game is changed.

Tobi hasn't done an awful lot of chatting at the shows I've seen. Just a little here and there, nothing major, and certainly nothing I'd have missed if it weren't there. But that's the thing with a) festivals and b) London, time's always tight.

I agree about Russell, he was hilarious at their headlining show in London a couple of years back.

Dave Hill from Demon isn't bad. Blaze Bayley was good with Wolfsbane, but with his solo band he's annoying. Erm... oh, Damian Wilson is hilarious.

Dude, it's awesome. That IS the end of the song, nothing comes after it. They just instantly stop at the end of a riff. No fading, no four bars of resolution, nothing. They finish a riff and it's on to the next song.
