I am currently trying to broaden my "metal horizons" a little bit by trying to get into some Grindcore. I haven't heard much of it, other than a couple bands, and it doesn't seem THAT much like it's my style. But I am a huge fan of other extreme metal.

So where would be a good place for me to start with Grindcore bands?

Thanks.

Good place to start:

Napalm Death - "Scum"
Carcass - "Symphonies of Sickness"

After you've gotten those, I recommend:

Repulsion - "Horrified"
Terrorizer - "World Downfall"

And that's pretty good for the "beginnings" of grindcore.

I like some grind. I am defintely not the resident expert on these boards about grind but I would check out Napalm Death,Bolt Thrower and on the newer side Gaza.

I second mankvill's post and also suggest you try out some Pig Destroyer.

Reek of Putrefaction (Carcass) is also pretty grindy. And if you like production that sounds like it's coming out of Ronald Reagan's collapsed, wrinkled, hairy butthole, then that is the album for you.

I own Necroticism and Heartwork by Carcass, and I've heard alot of songs from the first two and they sound good. I've been meaning to pick them up for awhile now. I've heard a little bit of Terrorizer and they sound like a good band too. I'll check out Repulsion and the older Napalm Death too, all I've really heard by them is newer stuff.

In addition to the above recommendations:

Pig Destroyer- Prowler In the Yard
Agoraphobic Nosebleed- Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope

Relapse also has an awesome grind compilation called "This Comp Kills Fascists." It has a good variety of different bands.

I would really only put Bolt Thrower's first album in the grindcore territory, the rest of it is definitely just death metal.

In Battle There is no Law is more crusty and grindy :)

General grind:
Insect Warfare
Napalm Death
Phobia
Mumakil
SOB
Abscess

Goregrind:
Carcass
Maggut
Dead Infection
Regurgitate
IMPETIGO
early Cattle Decap

Porno grind:
Rompeprop
that's it.

Also maybe some 7 Minutes of Nausea and early Anal Cunt to broaden your noisecore horizons.

IMPETIGO

PRONE ON THE OPERATING TABLE!
DEEP INCISION SLICED ON INANIMATE FLESH!

Porno grind:
Rompeprop

---

I'm late to the party, but let me throw in my two cents :2cents::

Old School
Carcass* - Symphopnies of Sickness, Reek of Putrefaction
Napalm Death* - Scum, From Enslavement to Obliteration
Bolt Thrower* - In Battle There Is No Law, Realm of Chaos
Brutal Truth - Need to Control, Sounds of the Animal Kingdom
Terrorizer - World Downfall
Autopsy - Severed Survival
Brujeria - Matando Gueros, Brujerizmo

* - For the first three bands, the earlier material, the better (in general).

"Middle School" - I don't have much experience with this group of bands, but what I've heard, I like.
Agoraphobic Nosebleed
Assück
Cephalic Carnage
Nasum
Phobia
Rotten Sound

New School
Pig Destroyer - The kings of modern grindcore - there are none better. Start with "Terrifyer", then "Phantom Limb".
Mumakil - Pig Destroyer needs to watch their rear view mirror for these dudes
Landmine Marathon - Some of the scariest sounds I've ever heard from female vocal cords, ever
Brain Drill - speed city (too fast?)
Deaden - modern-day, early-Carcass worship at its best
General Surgery - more Carcass worship, though not as good
Antigama - don't know that much about them, either, but like what I've heard

Enjoy,
The Nat :horns:

How is wanting to listen to grindcore broadening your horizons. Why is grindcore so priased by the people who listen to it I dont get what is so fasinating about nothing but blast beats and death growls for two minutes. It takes no talent at all.Grindcore is not music and I will never understand why people call it music.Grindcore is a disgrace to everything that is music.

Man, you're allowed your opinion, but god damn, just shut the fuck up about how much you hate grindcore already, people are allowed to like it. I'm one in the small percentage on the board who thinks Mastodon and Baroness are both really bad, but do I bitch about it everytime someone praises them? No! In the recent 5FDP setlist, someone said something about how hard they were trying not to hate, and you said to them "If youre going to hate don't click on the thread". Well you know what? Take your own fucking advice.

Also, wanting to listen to grindcore is "broadening your horizons" because you're trying to take in a new type of music, obviously. You can say it's not music ALL YOU WANT, but it is. You're aware that every argument you just made, are the general arguments that ignorant people make about metal as a whole right?

EDIT: A bit more on topic, I've never been much of a grindcore guy, I'm pretty picky with my grind and only listen to a few bands. Obviously, Repulsion, Autopsy, Napalm Death, Carcass, old Bolt Thrower, etc were already mentioned. I think I saw a mention, but I'll second the General Surgery rec, as the world's first Carcass worship band. I love me some GS.

For those who haven't heard the new Agoraphobic Nosebleed, it's awesome. They kind of went the same direction that Pig Destroyer did and tighted up their sound, added some more death/thrash elements, etc. but the end result is great. Their new female vocalist (Kat) fucking kills.

Grindcore is my personal favorite type of music. I've been listening to and playing it for over 15 years now. I understand that it's not for everyone, which is why it has remained where it belongs, underground. However, I have to take issue with you saying it takes no talent at all. While I agree that there are tons of horrible, talentless bands out there, good grind is impossible for mediocre musicians to play. Keeping a band together, sounding tight, at the speeds grind is generally played at is not possible for subpar musicians. Some of the best drummers I've worked with have been grind drummers, and I've worked with all types of musicians, from folk to mainstream pop to power metal to death metal. I think it's ignorant for anyone to discount the musicianship of an entire genre of music simply because you don't like it. There is plenty of music out there that I think it awful that I still have respect for because the playing is good.

Back to the original topic, for anyone looking for some good grind check out:

Nasum, my favorite grind band of all time, R.I.P. Mieszko
Rotten Sound, I can't believe nobody's mentioned them, kinda filling the void left by Nasum
Gadget
Pig Destroyer
Splitter
Haemorrhage
Flesh Parade
Kill The Client
Wormrot
Noisear
Phobia
Lock Up

There are always the classics too, Terrorizer, Repulsion, Carcass, Napalm Death. I usually assume most people have heard all of them before. I really only consider the first Carcass to be grind. Napalm Death was grind at first, moved into more death metal territory, and brought back some grind elements on all their albums since Enemy Of The Music Business, their best album in my opinion. Terrorizer and Repulsion only have one album out apiece, the shitty Terrorizer "reunion" album does not count.

Parlamentarisk Sodomi is awesome! I had the good fortune of hanging out with Napalm Death a few years ago and Barney mentioned them. I've only been able to find one 7" since then, but I downloaded their most recent full length from soulseek. They're such a rad band!

I've seen them seven times. A guy who used to be a regular at my friend's bar is a childhood friend of Mitch Harris, which is how I wound up partying with them. Some of the best shows I've been to have been Napalm shows.

I'm really late to this thread but I'm a huge grind fan so I thought I would contribute. Obviously daimonos has probably checked all these bands out already, so this is to anyone in need of grindcore:

Nasum- discography. They pioneered the swedish grind sound (now popularized by Rotten Sound, Exhale, Infantacide, etc.) Their first album Inhale/Exhale is very raw and their follow-up, Human 2.0, has a very clean production, the aforementioned 'Swedish grind sound.' Their third album, Helvete, is my favorite, just a better Human 2.0. Their fourth and last album, Shift, is much more brutal and closer to death metal than the previous three, and a great album indeed.

Pig Destroyer- "Prowler in the Yard." Their first full-length is a grind masterpiece. The guitar tone is amazing, and J.R. Hayes is one of the best grind vocalists in existence.
Their next two albums are good, but more metal than grind.

Wormrot- "Abuse." It's not that original, but this is an example of how modern grindcore should be done. The guys are from Singapore, no less!

Maruta- "In Narcosis." Only album I've listened to by them. It's deathgrind but it manages to not suck. Hmmmm.....

for classics:

Repulsion- "Horrified." very dirty deathgrind sound with random slayer-like solos thrown in. probably the most influential grindcore album of all time.

Brutal Truth- "Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses." essential grindcore release, no doubt. Very dirty sound, political lyrics. (check out the rest of their discography too)

Terrorizer- "World Downfall."

also, I'm probably the only grind fan in existence who hates Naplam Death. but most people will tell you that they're essential and all... :tp:

Those guys know a disappointingly little amount about pokemon. I read over the song titles and they either have nothing to do with pokemon, use the word pokemon in them or namedrop pikachu. Not clever at all :(

Especially compared to Zuckuss, who know the shit out of Star Wars.

Uhh... you know they're not really doctors, right? That it's really just one guy and the people in the band photos are just people he got to pose for the pictures? I like their music, but it's funny that people still buy that gimmick after all these years.
