Post 'em here. You have until 11:59 on February 14th.

20 albums. gogogo

edit: scoring from Nat, because he is a goddamn baller

P = 5 * (20 - R) + 50, where P is the number of points, and R is the ranking that each voter gives it. So,

20th place vote gets 50 points
19th place vote gets 55 points
18th place vote gets 60 points
17th place vote gets 65 points
16th place vote gets 70 points
15th place vote gets 75 points
14th place vote gets 80 points
13th place vote gets 85 points
12th place vote gets 90 points
11th place vote gets 95 points
10th place vote gets 100 points
9th place vote gets 105 points
8th place vote gets 110 points
7th place vote gets 115 points
6th place vote gets 120 points
5th place vote gets 125 points
4th place vote gets 130 points
3rd place vote gets 135 points
2nd place vote gets 140 points
1st place vote gets 145 points

Top twenty point totals win. Easy as pie.

At least, until I can talk to Nat and see how to score someone with less than 20.

Well, it depends on what everyone wants to do. If, for example, we want to try to make everyone do the work and come up with 20, and penalize their votes if they don't (similar to what JRA proposes in the following post below):

Like this perhaps?

20th place vote gets 50 points
19th place vote gets 55 points
18th place vote gets 60 points
17th place vote gets 65 points
16th place vote gets 70 points
15th place vote gets 75 points
14th place vote gets 80 points
13th place vote gets 85 points
12th place vote gets 90 points
11th place vote gets 95 points

...then we have to change the formula slightly (which I'll tell you how to do it if we all decide that). On the other hand, if we all decide that the first place vote from any voter should get 145 points (and so on down the line, with five less points for each vote), then the formula I gave you already does that.

Personally, my vote would be to try and make everybody do the work to make a list of 20. Those that provide only ten - or especially less (like five), shouldn't get to have their top picks getting as many points as those who voted for a full twenty - at least that's my opinion.

If you want to change the formula to do what I'm suggesting, then you have to change the "20" in the formula from a fixed number to a variable (say, V - where V is the total number of votes cast by a voter). So the revised formula would then be:

P = 5 * (V - R) + 50, where P is the number of points, R is the ranking that each voter gives it, and V is the total number of votes cast by a voter.

Sorry for the long response, but you asked (JRA). :snivel:

TL;DR: I like Mankvill's answer of "YES" a whole lot better - everyone has to vote for 20 - but I'm no dictator. ;)

Well what I meant was if someone only has 10, then #1 on their list gets 50 points instead of 145 and such.

I really don't want to come up with 20. I thought the original number was 10 and I thought I barely had enough to fill that quota. When I learned that I did, I was excited to share, and then I learned it was 20. I wouldn't have bothered if I knew it was 20 before hand.

I think we decided that we were covering an entire decade and that since we were such a small community voting, we increased the number to 20.

I don't see how this doesn't work. Makes sense to me. Sure, his #1 won't have as much weight as someone else's, but if it's a matter of him not submitting one, I don't think it matters. Otherwise, just use the normal scale and points. It's not the end of the world. One list probably isn't going to dramatically shit the balance of this list.

But I gotta be honest, I can't understand how someone couldn't find 20 albums from this decade they really liked. I originally put a list together only intending it to be 10, then it became 20, and I almost felt obligated to expand it further. I almost considered making a top 50 of the decade.

Oh, and Jeff: I'd love to comfort you by saying something you like just barely missed the cut, but I didn't even really consider anything else you listen to. This decade was just too fucking good for genres you have no interest in. I bet our 80s lists would have a lot more common ground.

5. Dream Theater - Train of Thought
6. Trivium - Ascendancy

17. Hate Eternal - Fury and Flames
18. Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil
19. Cannibal Corpse - Kill
20. Pantera - Reinventing the Steel

Lamb of God are no.1 for 3 reasons:

1) I have spun that album more than any other in my collection and to this day I listen to it just as much, admire it just as much, and am still trying to learn all of it on guitar.

2) Nost of it this albums from when I first got into metal, and as such they're there because I owe them alot for getting me through some very tough times, and Ashes of the Wake has literally saved my life. And I mean that literally.

3) It will piss of Mankvill, and as much as I have i common with him in terms of death etal and what not, the chance to annoy him is very appealing to me :D

Well, one observation already: the top albums of individual years' lists aren't going to mean a damn thing because clearly the Crack the Skye fans didn't like Crack the Skye quite as much as the Gin fans liked Gin, among other similar situations. How we weighted our favorite year-to-year albums within the decades is going to make this list look pretty nutty.

For the record...at least my record:

Gin is one of the best Metal albums I've heard in a very long time. Only problem being, I didn't buy it till 2010. So I can't include it.

That is a good point, but it feels weird to me since I never listened to it in 2009. If it had came out in November/December 2009, there, I could find an excuse.

Also, I would have to knock off With Oden On Our Side off the top 20, which I don't wanna do. It's a damn good album.

yup, first death metal album I ever owned.. Its by no means their best, but it did shine light on not only an amazing bands back catalogue, but alot of other bands, such as hate eternal and nile. I'm basing my list purely on sentimental value, because I am simply not bothered listening to every album I own from this decade and reviewing each one for this list.

I actually preferred Blue by the narrowest of margins, man. It was really, really close - let me tell ya - but yeah. I think they progressed from Red to Blue - srsly. :D

Nat, you liked Ichthyologist over Metridium Field(s)?Again, by the narrowest of margins, yes. In the end, the difference for me was that Metridium Fields really only has five songs on it, plus the title track, which is really long. The Ichthyologist has ten tracks on it, two of which are somewhat disposable (Sutterville and Mormon Island), but that still leaves eight solid tracks. There's just more to love (albeit only slightly more) on The Ichthyologist at the end of the day. :snivel:

Nicely done, my brother. I liked Slayer, too - but if I had included one on my list (which I almost did), it would have been "god hates us all". I also like that you had two apiece for Tool, Meshuggah and Mastodon (three of my favorite bands), but I had so many artists I wanted to highlight I just had to force myself to not repeat any (I kinda overthink things like that sometimes :eyes:). Last but not least, good looking out on Cobalt, and especially Burst. There needs to be more Burst fans in this world - they are just so damn good. ;) :fist:

P.S. - I think the HoF album you were looking for is "Blessed Black Wings" (same as my list again!) ;)

Yep. I was watching the dvd and in such awe that I botched the title with a Danzig tip. hahaha

I'm thinking HoF is going to soon become one of my favorite bands. I've only seen them as an opener and was blown away back then. The live clips on teh cd are bad ass.

Yeah Cobalt and Burst are both incredible cd's start to finish. Probably an acquired taste for most but worth the time and effort. Any word on Burst reuniting or their situation? I recall Linus mentioning a DVD of their last show which would RULE!

Apparently, they're in random order. Mankvill, give each of them five points and move on. Except Lamb of God. Those get one point apiece.

Oh well. Time for my first post here and my list of the top 20 albums of the Last Decade :rocker:

Let´s start from the bottom

20. Lacuna Coil - Comalies
19. Amon Amarth - With Oden on Our Side
18. ISIS - Oceanic
17. Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death
16. Ministry - Rio Grande Blood
15. Sum41 - Chuck
14. Opeth - Blackwater Park
13. Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero
12. Tool - 10 000 Days
11. Slipknot - Iowa
10. Mastodon - Blood Mountain
9. Dark Funeral - Diabolis Interium
8. Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue
7. Gojira - The Way of All Flesh
6. Khoma - The Second Wave

And now for the top five...

at number five and 125 points
Tool - Lateralus
It took me a quite sometime to get into Tool. But this record did win me over. The album start of with "The Grudge" and never ever lets you out of it´s grip. Tools finest moment so far...

Number 4...
Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
The Fragile and The Downward Spiral are among the top five greatest records ever. With Teeth is truly a marvelous record. But it somehow lacks the intensity and depth of the before amentioned. But "Beside You in Time" is not music. It is art at it most beautiful and probably the greatest track of the decade.

Number 3 and 135 points goes to...
Gojira - From Mars To Sirius
I really got into these guys in 2008. So brutal and so technically perfect in every way. From the every start I heard this I knew that this is some of the most innovative metal ever.

And The runner-up is:
Mastodon - Leviathan
Speaking of being innovators. Here is the shit to beat. So totally different it was when I first heard Mastodon. (Actually in a live setting in a supporting slot to Slipknot and Slayer). But it totally blew me away. If the eighties in metal belonged to Iron Maiden and the nineties to Pantera. The 00 will belong to Mastodon. Mark my words

The greatest album of 00´s in my opinion is:
Marilyn Manson - Holy Wood (In the shadow of the valley of Death)
This was truly the last mastepiece ever written my Marilyn Manson. Antichrist Superstar is still his greatest record. But this isn´t far away. Even it has been ten years since this was released the album still is amazing and i listen to it every now and then. Just listen to "The Nobodies". It just doesn´t get any better than that.

And the honorable mentions:
a) Deftones – White Pony
b) Wolves in The Throne Room – Black Cascade
c) Satyricon – Now, Diabolical
d) Disturbed – Ten Thousand Fists
e) Rammstein – Mutter
f) Korn – Untouchables
g) Thåström – Kärlek är för dom
h) Immortal – All Shall Fall
i) Bad Religion -The Empire Strikes First

Dude. You really had me until Manson. :nonono:

Welcome to the board nonetheless. ;)

Well, I'm still saying that out of let's be conservative and say 500 albums I heard from the last decade, two from Iron Maiden are in the top 4% of that. They both deserve a 10/10 or an A+ or whatever, I just like Dance of Death more.

To be completely honest, I listened to a sounboard bootleg of their show at Coachella SO much that by the time Alive 2007 came out, it was awesome, but I preferred Alive 1999.

That said, the encore tracks for Alive 2007 were fucking sweet. :D

Right, here's a list none of you will agree with.

Normally I base lists like this on the most important albums. The ones that did something new and different, and did it well. But for a whole decade, I'm going with the ones I enjoyed, and listen to, most, and that are consistently good throughout, no bad tracks (which unfortunately knocked out 'Southern Born Killers' by Stuck Mojo).

1. Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy
2. Halford - Resurrection
3. Iommi - Iommi
4. Arena - Immortal?
5. Frameshift - An Absence of Empathy
6. Blaze - The Tenth Dimension
7. Slash's Snakepit - Ain't Life Grand
8. Dio - Magica
9. Ayreon - The Human Equation
10. Megadeth - The World Needs A Hero
11. Halford - Crucible
12. Dream Theater - Train of Thought
13. Tim "Ripper" Owens - Play My Game
14. Cathedral - The VIIth Coming
15. Testament - The Formation of Damnation
16. Threshold - Subsurface
17. Slave To The System - Slave To The System
18. Richie Kotzen - Into The Black
19. Saxon - Lionheart
20. The Duke - My Kung Fu Is Good

Big omissions, but these just aren't quite as "go to" as the above:
Queensryche - Tribe
Opeth - Damnation
AC/DC - Stiff Upper Lip
Tim's Favourite - Noises From The Darkroom
Judas Priest - Demolition
Kamelot - The Black Halo
Sixx:A.M. - The Heroin Diaries
Threshold - Dead Reckoning
Metallica - Death Magnetic
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Voodooland - Give Me Air
Bigelf - Hex
Primal Fear - Devil's Ground
Evile - Enter The Grave
Grand Magus - Monument
Candlemass - King of The Grey Islands
Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden
Slayer - Gods Hates Us All
Motorhead - Inferno
Amor - Amor
W.A.S.P. - Unholy Terror
Thunder - Shooting At The Sun
Iron Maiden - Dance of Death
James LaBrie - Elements of Persuasion

And a some that could very well end up making this list eventually, but at the moment are just that bit too new to have earnt their place just yet:

Preacher Stone - Preacher Stone
This Misery Garden - Another Great Day On Earth
The Black Crowes - Before The Frost...
Suicidal Angels - Sanctify The Darkness
Jupiter Society - Terraform
Nomad Son - New Light
Forsaken - After The Fall
Count Raven - Mammons War

And I've surprised even myself that my favourite sub-genres, doom and thrash, aren't represented practically at all...
