So I picked up my first album of 2010 today, and that album is the newest Ihsahn. What a great way to start off the year. Ihsahn's blend of Extreme Progressive Metal is really working out for him, all of the songs are memorable. The vocals are great, as are the guitars and riffs. And yes, there is a saxophone on this record. Some people may be put off by it, but I think it adds alot of feeling and depth to the songs, and the guy playing it sounds like a talented musician (but I don't really know anything about saxophones ). But if you were a fan of any of his other albums, or any bands like Opeth, I would recommend picking this one up, you won't regret it.

1. The Barren Lands
2. A Grave Inversed
3. After
4. Frozen Lakes on Mars
5. Undercurrent
6. Austere
7. Heaven's Black Sea
8. On the Shores

What are everyone else who've heard it's thoughts on the album?

Just started really listening to this, and it's brilliant.

At the moment i'm not sure whether i like Snakes For the Divine or After more, but I've been listening to After on a pretty regular basis ever since it came out. I think it is probably better because it conveys all kinds of emotions in the music, and it turns out to be an all around awesome album.

EDIT: And of course the saxophone is awesome!

I think the reason why I think After is better is because I didn't know what to expect from it. I thought Snakes for the Divine would be what it is, another solid High on Fire album. After came out of left field, and really made a worthwhile listen.

Yeah i hear ya. The man is a genius. He should really do an American tour too, I highly doubt it would happen, but it would be awesome.

Have you heard his other solo albums? I've only heard a little bit of them, but if they're as good as this one I'll buy them for sure.

Emperor is always great too. :rocker:

His other solo albums are brilliant. The Adversary is one of my favorite albums, and angL was pretty awesome too.

After is phenomenal, definitely Top 10 material. Would love to see him in America, but he's said he doesn't much like touring, so I wouldn't get my hopes up. Maybe NYC & LA one of these days, but I think it was just before angL came out that he said he didn't plan on doing many shows until later down the road, when he had enough solo material to do a full solo set and then maybe an encore of Emperor songs, instead of just an Emperor set with a few of his own songs (though with three albums out now he might be on his way to getting there). I know so far he's done one show supporting Opeth, and he's doing some festivals this summer.

I'd be really excited to see him.

I'd be really excited to see him.

Unfortunately I just heard in an interview from him that he is not going to tour other than select dates in Europe.

I enjoyed this album but I'm not even remotely considering it as one of the best albums of the year. The sax parts - which still totally fucking rule - tricked me into thinking the songs were better than they were.

EDIT: Upon re-re-listening, it's better than I thought. :D

After is a good album, with some special songs. But some of them, particularly A Grave Inversed, I struggle to find any redeeming features in.

Sax parts do that to me as well. Nothing quite gets to me like long saxophone parts.

I consider that to be the worst song on the album, but I still think it's good.

I'm gonna buy this album soon. It's one of a few from this year that have inspired me to do so...I think it could fare rather well come January if this year is weak relative to last year as I expect.

I am a big fan of Emperor and Ihsahn. That being said, I just could not get into this album. The sax parts ruined for me any potential this album may have had.

I'm a total sax nerd, so I loved this album naturally. However it's taken 3rd on my list because of Triptykon and Heathen, but The Ocean could well take the top as well.

This year is turning out great to me, with some possible other releases coming out. Last year there were some truly amazing albums, but there was a bit of a drop off at one point in my top 10...this year it seems there are a lot of great albums, but none the quality of last years.

This year kind of sucks for me compared to last year so far. Based on what I actually know is coming out and what I've heard so far, I'll be hard-pressed to put together a top ten of albums I truly love. :(

I agree. And I thought last year sucked compared to the year before.

:( losing my faith in new music oh fuck

...Actually this year isn't terrible so far it's just that 2008 was a damn awesome year for me, and 2009 was just above average.

edit: more on topic, i can't decide whether or not i'm interested in this album

I think by the end of the year it will turn out like this for me as well. It's just that as of right now, 2010 is pretty terrible.

I think what makes years good are the little discoveries you make along the way. I bet you'll find smaller bands releasing amazing albums throughout the year. It will be those bands that make the year good.

A lot of Metalcore albums coming out this year...:hmm:

Very true. I have no doubts that my top ten will be full of kick-ass stuff at the end of the year, but it'll probably be like seven things that I had no anticipation for until like the day before I heard it. Nothing wrong with that either.
