THAT'S RIGHT YOU BITCHES I'M DOING IT THIS YEAR AND RIGGING IT SO ANAAL NATHRAKH WINS

Copypasta from the sexy DethMaiden:

1. You can only vote for albums (or EPs or splits) of newly-recorded studio material that was released in the United States in 2009. This should pretty much be a given at this point.

2. You still need 10 albums to get full credit for your #1. If you vote for 5 albums, your #1 is worth 5.

3. The new multiplier is as follows: if an album receives three or more votes, each voter gives two bonus points to that album. For example, an album given a 3rd, 5th, and 10th by three different voters would earn 8 points for the 3rd, 6 points for the 5th, 1 point for the 10th, and an additional 6 points (2 times 3) for the voter quantity multiplier. Algebra can be fun when metal is involved.

4. Please refrain from posting your top 50 or whatever here, and from posting images of the albums you're voting for. Start your own damn threads for that, it'll just clog the page if you do it here.

5. There is no "metal only" rule, as decided by the Metal Setlists electorate. Diversify if you wish.

6. Have fun and don't be afraid to argue. That's the point of this whole charade.

NOTE: If you've already started a thread of your own, still cast your vote in here or it won't count. I'm not gonna hunt and peck all over the board for your list.

Right. When I had the Hellhammer comp. "Demon Entrails" on my top 10, I had to pick something else for the year end voting thread. If Fratt can find a replacement for that Arch Enemy album, he should go ahead and replace it but if he can't, I don't think it'll make too much difference.

Tentative release period for the album is like end of summer or early fall, September most likely. Obviously very subject to change though. It is definitely supposed to be this year though.

You know only about 1/10 of those will be any good, right? And the Astral Doors one is NOT one of them! Man what a disappointment... Although, it shouldn't have been really. Song titles like 'Testament of Rock', 'Rainbow Warrior', 'Metal DJ' and 'Evil Spirits Fly' should have told me all I needed to know.

... I hope you're kidding. Seriously, I hope so. About the 1/10 thing, that is. As for the Astral Doors, can't say, but I never take your opinion as a great indicator, no offense. You tend to always disagree with the general opinion, and in many cases, my own.
I don't believe every forthcoming album I mentioned will be good/great, but I definitely think at least 10 of them will be VERY good unless the bands majorly fuck up. There are certain bands that have to TRY really hard to put out something I won't like, and frankly a lot of these bands (Seventh Wonder, Circus Maximus, Royal Hunt, Pyramaze, Vanishing Point) are coming off of what I'd consider their personal best records and some of the best records of the past half-decade. I have every reason to be excited. I don't believe in cynicism when it comes to new music from bands I like.

ravenheart
01-01-2010, 06:21 PM
I don't disagree with the general opinion, I disregard it. That's different. I then form my own. If it's different, that's just the way it goes. I think at least 2/3 of those albums, at best, will be derivative, metal-by-numbers. Especially Firewind.

I share your high hopes for Avantasia, Masterplan, Pyramaze and Royal Hunt. Definitely not for Kamelot, JOP, CIIC or Rob Rock, who I think are coming off the back of their respective worst records to date and will have to pull something pretty special out of the bag to surprise me.

I'm excited about some of the stuff coming out in other sub-genres a lot more than prog and power, though. Actually... have we had a thread on this yet?

The new Astral Doors has worse lyrics than 'The Devil You Know', a horrible drum mix that's all snare, and terribly formulaic songs.

Seriously, it's a horrible album. And you know what a Patrick Johansson fan I am. His vocals are good as normal (although this time there are parts where the RJD comparisons are bordering on the ridiculous - something I've never really agreed with, despite everyone else saying he's a Dio copy), and the guitar solos are blinding, but that's all.

That said, I'm not saying you won't enjoy it. I mean, some of my favourite rock records from last year couldn't exactly be branded as lyrical masterpieces or be said to have reinvented the rock genre. They were just enjoyable records. Sometimes a good record, and an enjoyable record are different things.

Iron Fire are very "meh", I'm with you there. I think you've picked out the best ones.

I thought the Inmoria disc was superb. Very heavy. If you want some really good prog, try the Leprous one. Very impressed with them.

Sacred Steel is very... watered down Jag Panzer, I suppose. Too formulaic for me. Leverage I haven't actually listened to yet. It's in the pile waiting its turn. But they're your kind of band, I believe.

Have you listened to Andromeda before? They're a good band (although deadly boring live), and this is probably their best effort.

Just thought of another one: Avian.

Frankly, in the age of the internet, MySpace and Spotify in particular, listen to all of them! What have you got to lose?

Haha I don't have time. I'm not nearly as hardcore of a music fan as most people here so I don't really go out of my way to hear a lot of albums (even if I hear good things about them). Hell, one of my former favorite bands (Candlemass) put out an album this year and I've yet to bother to spin it even though I've had it downloaded since the summer. I just tend to stick with all my old albums that I enjoy and most of the new albums I've bought this year has been old "classic" stuff.

If you can PM me before the deadline, that'd be good. But I don't have a problem extending the deadline for dear ol' Nat. Just lemme know around the 12th or so if you need more time.

Cool beans. My top ten is basically set, so I'll send it to you soon so you have it. (I definitely don't want you to hold up the rest of the show just for me.)

Doubt if you'll have heard them all, though - because it's long as fuck and includes some non-metal stuff I don't think you're into (but I could be wrong).

I really couldn't get into it, at all, whatsoever. I absolutely adored the last 3 records though. Stream of Consciousness, The Perfect Machine, and The 25th Hour are 3 of the best prog/power hybrid releases of the past half-dozen years, IMO. Michele luppi was an amazing singer and fit that band so well, the decision to get Fabio lione back on vocals was just bad, in my opinion. I had doubts from the very beginning and the album justified all of them. Definitely among my biggest disappointments this year.
If you have heard the 3 previous albums and like Michele's voice, you should check out "Killing Touch - One of a Kind". Made my top 10 for the year, it's his new project, great album.

I almost have my top ten finalized, and then imma send it to Mankvill. (My main PC took a shit on me, though, so I have to do some hard drive scans and get that bad boy up & running again before I can listen to a last few albums to cement the #9 and #10 spots.) Don't ask him what they are, or I will find you and kick you in the shins. ;)

I will give you a semi-spoiler or two...you and I share four bands in our respective top tens, and a few of your honorable mentions will be up there quite high on my list as well. Plus, I already know which ones on my list you're gonna bitch about (not to put it that strongly, but just for the sake of humor).

My first 10 or so Ichthyologist listens had me happy, but not quite over the moon. I've been listening to it more and more recently, and now that I think of it, Necropolis wasn't as good as Ichthyologist.

I believe the answer is yes - Aaron can do some phenomenal clean vocals when he wants to - there are some good examples on both The Ichthyologist and Metridium Fields, but I am hard pressed to give you examples or to confirm whose vocals are at the end of "Hole in the Sea", because I don't have access to my music right now (^%!*@^%$# computer is on the blink...).

I'm probably wrong, but aren't God Dethroned the band with the two black guitarists that did the Betcha can't play this on youtube where the first guitarist played something incredibly awful sounding and the second one played a riff in 3/4 and said it had crazy timing and upstrokes? Or was that God Forbid? Sorry, I'm on my phone and don't have access to youtube and metal archives don't load for me...

The only two bands on your list I've never heard of are HDK and Inmoria. But the only ones I've actually listened to that aren't on my list is Katatonia.

I like Amorphis and MDB, but I can't imagine either of them putting out something I enjoy more than a heavier Symphony X soundalike than Adagio. Maybe it's just that, I thoroughly enjoy obscene displays of technicalities, and even more when it's actually tasteful...

Would you mind telling me a bit about your favorites? I'm really doing my best to not come off as a douchebag, because I know on the internet, that happens to me all the time lol, plus the percocets from my wisdom teeth removal teeth have me a bit loopy, hahaha.

If I had purchased Kykesa earlier it may have climbed higher. I know I'm in the minority on Baroness but Red Album is just better start to finish for me. If Ironbound had counted for 2009 it would have made my list. I still think 2009 was one of the best if not the best year for heavy music ever. There are many bands in my 11-20 who once I see them live could have moved up also. And last not not least Shoulder of Your God was the best Bonus Track released in 2009 and should have made the final cut of Wrath.

Regarding this year vs. last year, which I thought was far superior:

The albums I'd rank approximately 16th-18th this year, are better than those I put there last year. However, the albums I placed 5th or so last year embarrass the hell out of the albums in those spots this year. This year for me was filled with a shit-ton of "good" albums, but very, very, very few "great" ones.

SomewhereInTime72
01-05-2010, 07:44 AM
This year was only really good for a few specific genres of metal. The rest of metal, and a lot of other genres, were totally lacking this year. As such, I think this is basically the worst year for music since 2004.

That is definitely Aaron at the end of "Hole in the Sea".
That is definitely NOT Aaron in Sky Burial [they must have used a different guest vocalist(s)].
Aaron does clean vocals all the time in Giant Squid. Here are a few examples (best ones are in bold type):

- Selected lines (for example, "You too will eat your young") in "Neonate" (the first few times it is sung)
- Backing vocals to Aurielle on "Versus the Siren"
- Backing vocals to Aurielle in the middle of "Ampullae of Lorenzini"
- Most of his vocals on the song "Summit" (still my favorite GS track) are clean (check out the end of the song especially)
- Several of his vocals on the song "Revolution in the Water" are clean
- Most of his vocals on the song "Dare We Ask the Widow?" (from the "Monster in the Creek" EP) are clean
- Most of his vocals during the verses on the song "Panthalassa" (he goes damn near operatic in that one!)
- Have you even listened to the song "La Brea Tar Pits"?!? Holy shit! (for example, from 1:00 to 1:30)
- Backing vocals to Jackie on "Sutterville"
- The entire song "Dead Man Slough" (although, to be fair, he does the breathy "Louis Armstrong" kind of thing most of the time here, but check out from 4:20 to 4:55!)
- "Blue Linckia" - hello!
- The song "Emerald Bay" has some of my favorite Aaron vocals of all time, and they're 100% clean (although again, much of the Louis thing here, too)
- Most of his vocals during the verses on the song "Rubicon Wall" (choruses, too!)

Yeah, man - Aaron has some fucking pipes. He can scream / bellow with the best of them, and sometimes he subdues his vocals down to almost a whisper, which isn't very musical, but I would say that there are almost just as many clean vocals - some of which are downright operatic in nature - as harsh ones in all of Giant Squid's work. He has been compared many times to Serj Tankian of System of a Down in terms of how his voice sounds when he sings, and Serj can certainly fuckin' sing as well.

^ This is one of many reasons why Giant Squid fucking rules. :fist: :rocker: :fist:

Yeah, I've had Giant Squid on at work and had people come up and ask if it was SOAD. I like his voice a lot but I do consider it to be pretty much a less "ethnic" version of Serj's voice.

Disagree. No comment on death/black metal and *core because I don't like them, but hard rock, progressive metal, regular heavy metal (weakest in this list, though), doom metal, blues, thrash and stoner all had a great year.

There were some killer instrumental albums released too. The female-fronted/gothic sub-genre did OK. The new Epica and Leaves' Eyes were both as good as that kind of thing gets. Mena Brinno kicked the shit out of them again though. I guess traditional heavy metal didn't do that great, but then Saxon, U.D.O., Wolf, Rebellion, Narnia, Macbeth, Inmoria, Winterborn, Wizard, Nightmare, Ronny Munroe, Grave Digger and especially Herman Frank and Sesta Marconi all delivered.

The ONLY sub-genre of rock and metal I can think of that had a sub-par year is Southern (and industrial I suppose, but then, has industrial ever had a good year?). Lynyrd Skynyrd's new one is OK, and Preacher Stone's debut is fantastic. Other than that, pretty weak.

Don't be ridiculous. There have been plenty of better years than 1990 since 1990. For example,1993. :D I seriously cannot fathom calling 2009 better than even last year.

to elaborate on my previous post, 2009 was a-

Good year for: Prog/post metal, Black/Death metal (this is one group because nowadays those two genres are mixing a lot), Doom metal, Thrash metal

Bad year for: almost everything else

Everyone's saying Prog Metal had such a great year, but I don't agree, and I listen to a lot of Prog Metal. Sure, the genre's old warhorse Dream Theater finally got it right and released a good album again, and the genre's best traditional newcomer (Redemption) released a third consecutive great album. Aside from that were a few very good albums, but I'd still take 2007 or 2008 over this year for Prog Metal releases. My #1, 2, and 3 from '08 were all easily a notch above my #1 from this year, and 2007 probably wasn't all that different. None of the subgenres I really listen to had a great year, and power metal's was dismal.

Your prog metal and the general term prog metal aren't quite the same. My top ten had Between the Buried and Me, Redemption, Mastodon, and Baroness. All prog metal, only one of which you're interested in. I say it was a great year for prog metal, but I can see where you don't.

Yeah, maybe for old people. But let us not forget that Dream Theater took Opeth and BTBAM on tour with them on the inaugural edition of a tour with "Progressive" in its name. Like it or not, the times they are a-changin'. ;)

By your logic, "Traditional Metal" today is bands like Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine because bands like Iron Maiden are "for old people", and since these bands are technically off-shoots of that "mother-genre", it can be looked at as the same thing, unless you are "old".

All I was saying is that the bands I listen to and what I define Progressive Metal as IS the original definition of the genre, more or less, whereas the bands you're talking about have married that definition with other genres and forged something new. It's still technically Progressive Metal yes, and I have no qualms with that. However, it's not it in the traditional definition, whereas the bands I'm talking about are.

Prog metal can be easily divided up, but it's just too much of a hassle to give a genre 3 names. "Progressive Death Metal" fits for say, Opeth (or for a counter-example "Progressive Power Metal" would fit Pagan's Mind), but who the fuck really wants to say that to describe them. I just pick the one attribute that defines the band best, and in this example Opeth becomes Progressive metal. It's weird, because they may have very little in common with other bands of the same genre, but Prog metal basically means a merging of the prog rock and metal attitude/aesthetics/stylings... with a vague description like that, you get tons of different sounds emerging prominently.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, but I'm not sure I'm comfortable calling Pagan's Mind Progressive POWER Metal. They don't really sound anything like a power metal band, and NONE of my "Power Metal" friends like them, only the Prog-heads. Their sound is very, very much Images and Words-era Dream Theater made heavier and married with a lot of experimentation.

Yeah, I agree with the guy above me. The last 3 amorphis records have all been absolutely superb. I'm not sure if it's their best work yet by my standards, because Tales From the Thousand Lakes is one of my favorite albums of all time, and I'm not sure I can consider their recent work to be as good as that one album. The sound is hard to compare anyways, considering how much they've evolved from album to album.

Her new one didn't make my list (didn't make my top twenty, actually) but Lady Gaga is pretty atypical of all pop artists ever. First of all, her voice isn't run through some fucking computer software so it sounds like she can hit notes that she can't, she's classically trained. Second of all, in just eight tracks, The Fame Monster goes through a lot of genres that would be perfectly respectable in the eyes of most of you jaded music consumers with a different artist's name on them (electronica, prog rock, European dance-style music, pseudo-opera, plenty of other stuff). You don't have to like her but I say kudos to her for pushing some boundaries. God knows I'd rather see her on the list than any of a long list of metal albums that are nothing but tired, derivative retread but undeniably "metal". Not that anyone whose tastes I respect is voting for Slayer or Lamb of God anyway. ;)

yea pretty much. ive heard about 50 2009 releases but im not going to write something for each one. i need to write reviews as i go next time instead of waiting till january

 Yeah, that was the plan for me this year. I started out OK, but then my avarice for new music went way past the pace I was writing new reviews, so now I'm backlogged to the bejeezus. Oh well - I'll get the list out in due time.

Of course it would help if I had a FUCKING COMPUTER!!!
(my PC at home took a shit on me again, so I am in the process of reinstalling my OS and starting over...fucking fuck fuck fuck) :bouville:

Not that anyone whose tastes I respect is voting for Slayer or Lamb of God anyway. ;)

This is mostly right, but just to clarify a few things: yes, she's got a damn good voice, but she actually does use autotune software in some of her songs--as an aesthetic choice, obviously, since she can sing on key. And yes, The Fame Monster does a great job touching on several different genres, but I wouldn't give her too much credit in the originality department. She, and her collaborators, are just really good at what they do.

As for her "life as performance art" spiel, in some ways it's a good idea (how can you not be impressed by that VMA performance of "Paparazzi"?), but mostly her rambling just makes me . I just like her tunes.

EDIT: Oh, and just for the record, that song "Telephone" she did with Beyonce is absolutely awful.

No, she isn't. And frankly the rumors that she is are disgusting, and are, I believe, tied into our culture's distaste for female genitalia. She wears some super-tight latex underwear on stage, someone takes a picture where you can see a little crease in said underwear, and OMG SHE'S A MAN, FEMALE GENITALIA IS SUPPOSED 2 BE INVISIBLE. No, dumbshit, that's a vagina. Perhaps you haven't met one before.

The fact that you douche bags are defenging Lady Gaga on a METAL site and not saying anything about Slayer bashing is what the real problem here is. We all know you girls got picked on by cool people wearing Lamb of God shirts in school but Slayer bashing going by like it is nothing is blasphemy. Go to a Britney Gaga site and spew that idiotic BS. We can all be open minded but Slayer bashing will never be accepted here. If it is there's nothing metal about it.

Just because 4 losers bash Lamb of God time and time again on a metal site doesn't make them cool. It makes them pathetic.

true hermaphroditism in humans is biologically impossible. alot of pictures lead people to believe she has a dick... and her face pre-nosejob does look ugly enough to make people assume shes a transvestite, but in other pictures you can see a tampon string hanging out, so the truth is she probably just has a clit the size of a little boys penis.

because most people here dont care enough about overhyped pop singers to even bring them up. but when a band like slayer, that showed in the past they can write great metal, starts pumping out shitty half-assed records, it makes people disappointed enough to voice their opinions.

Hey, I don't bash anyone or their bands. I only speak up when these idiots think they can intimidate people and talk smack. Since they get bullied every day at school they try to do the same thing on here and I'm not having it.

I agree. The bashing on this board does go overboard quite a bit. I remeber when I first got into metal the fans were united in the simple fact that we all liked metal, it was a brotherhood. Now a days there are so many sub genres in metal that people spend more time debating what is and isn't considered to be metal within these sub genres. Instead of embracing everyone here in the simple fact we all like metal (no matter the style of the music) people act like dicks and piss people off by bashing.

It's real simple, if you don't like a band don't read the thread or post anything about them. Just because someone doesn't like a band doesn't mean that others don't. Sometimes not saying anything in a thread about a band you don't like says a lot more than if you do.

One of the reasons I got into metal was because I thought it was less of this popularity/bashing bull shit. Maybe I was wrong.

This cite is awsome especially for the sets and gig reports and much else, but there is a lot of bashing other's musical taste. Is it really necessary?

I personally like about 2 lamb of god songs. Do I think in ways they are tallented at what they do, yes. Do I like them particularly? No.
but ask me do I give one fuck if you like them or not? no, and that's your opinion and you can love them for all I care.

I'm not real fond of slayer either, but a lot of that is lack of exposure.
but I'm not gonna bash anyone for their taste, unless its totally just a joke.

Like I could say, "Oh Mankville, that death metal you listen to sucks." and totally be joking, and expect him to come back with something like the opinions are like ass holes comment above. However, I don't do this, for one thing I only bash on people who I'm friends with, and I just don't know him well enough. (sorry to use you as the example again dude)
Bashing on someone's taste who you don't even know, even a little, is silly...
in my opinion anyway.

and once you start name calling, you know you've lost the arguement anyway.

anyway, there's my thoughts... enjoy

I thought one of the initial draws for coming into Metal in the first place was the fact that you are able to have your own god damn opinions and no one was trying to force you to like something?

Metal "culture" is actually much more closed-minded and indoctrinating than any of us may like to admit. You're right about the "initial draw," but it actually just turns out to be mostly an illusion.

Opinions are like assholes: everybody has one and I'M GOING TO VIOLATE IT

Best post in this thread thus far?
