Also not these are just my favorite albums within said genres, not most influential etc.

Edit: I made it so you don't have to click anything to view mine.

Power Metal
1. Sonata Arctica - Silence
2. Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth
3. Nightwish - Wishmaster
4. Stratovarius - Visions
5. Gamma Ray - Power Plant

All in all, not a bad list, every one of these except the Nightwish album (not an old Nightwish fan) are great records.

My personal top 10 for "traditional" power metal, unranked, would look something like this:

Stratovarius - Visions
Edguy - Hellfire Club
Edguy - Mandrake
Blind Guardian - Imaginations From the Other Side
Sonata Arctica - Silence
Gamma Ray - land of the Free
Gamma Ray - Somewhere Out in Space
Dungeon - Resurrection
Nocturnal Rites - Grand Illusion
Masterplan - Masterplan
Primal Fear - Seven Seals
... alright, 11.

100% off the top of my head. I'll do a prog metal and traditional/classic metal list later.

Symphonies is totally grindcore dude :D

I don't really listen to enough power metal to comment on anything, but the first 2 Dragonforce albums and then Sabaton, Blind Gaurdian and Helloween are kinda cool. But I really have no idea what I'm talking about

Deathgrind at best. There's shitloads of melody and some long, composition pieces on there. Reek is grindcore, Symphonies marked their first transition in sound.

Transition? Yeah, definitely, but I'd say it's predominantly grindcore with elements of death metal, whereas Necroticism is death metal with elements of grindcore.

I know I'm the only person who thinks this, but I always considered Necroticism to be a thrash album.:eyes:

Agree to disagree. :) If it is grindcore, it's the best fucking grindcore album of all time.

It and Heartwork are definitely thrashy in nature.
That out of nowhere riff in Corporal Jigsore Quandry (the one after the solo), the last part of Carneous Cacophony and plenty of nifty little things throughout both albums are pretty far removed from death metal and certainly seem to have inspired many thrash songs.

It would actually be 2 for me, Reek being number one :D
I didn't put it on my list because I didn't want to double up bands in individual lists. Possibly how Impetigo snuck into the Death Metal one...

Why the hell would you pick Persistence over Among?

Among is merely thrash, where as Persistence is, to quote Ultra Boris, "Mother of God! Epic Thrash!"

Holy god damn shit, hold the phone. You and I agree on something. I hate to call Nightfall overrated, but I have to say that ultimately it is, for I think Imaginations is a stronger album but it always gets overlooked in favor of Nightfall which is just worshipped.

Nightfall is definitely overrated by a lot of people, but it was my first Blind Guardian album so I've got something of a soft spot for it. Imaginations is a really good album too, though.

i always thought Nightfall was the best album. Imaginations does have some very standout tracks such as Script For My Requiem and Bright Eyes but Nightfall IMO has waaay more standout tracks. every song on that album is a stand out track IMO.
