For starters (from the "I Don't Get Opeth" thread...):

Isis - Hand of the Host
Grayceon - Still the Desert
Pelican - The Woods
Neurosis - Purify (and many others)
Tool - Third Eye, Reflection, Roseta Stoned
Mastodon - The Czar, The Last Baron, Hearts Alive

Can't really even do this since my tastes so heavily lean towards longer compositions. As I said earlier, I have 246 songs that are 10 minutes or longer in iTunes, and I'd suspect that at least 200 of them I absolutely love if only for the simple reason that if a band bothered to write a ten minute song, it's probably good.

Natrlhi
11-05-2009, 12:43 PM
Okay, I just read some of the responses in the other thread, so let's make a rule so this actually has some relevance:

The song has to TOTALLY FUCKING ROCK (not just be present in your iPod or on your hard drive or whatever).

Best of the best, got it?

:thelaw:

Now, continue...

DethMaiden

It's just that I'd shortchange SO MANY songs to even attempt a list. I think if I had to make a "top 10 songs list" (don't even ask me to) it would probably have at least five or six 10-minute plus songs.

I think we've already had this thread before...or maybe that was just for instrumentals.

Boris - Ganbou-Ki (or anything off of Amplifier Worship :stoned: )
Celtic Frost - Synagoga Satanae
Iron Maiden - Rime Of The Ancient Mariner (duh)
Arsis - A Diamond For Disease
Mercyful Fate - Satan's Fall :horns:
Silencer - Death, Pierce Me

The Ancient Mariner

Octavarium - Dream Theater
White Walls - Between the Buried and Me (Well anything off colors thats over ten minutes, just this one is probably my favorite)
Shogun - Trivium (Flame if you want, I enjoy this song, as does every Trivium fan I know, and alot of people who aren't Trivium fans)

Theres more, but Id have to research them and Im feeling lazy atm ;)

SomewhereInTime72
11-05-2009, 12:56 PM
I'll try to limit it to the songs I think are some of the best. This unfortunately means it'll have less metal though, hehe. :hmm: :bliss:

Pete Davis - Anaerobics (if you're into indie/acoustic check this guy out he's great) song here: http://petedavis.bandcamp.com/album/algorithms-and-anaerobics
Kansas - Song For America
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
My Dying Bride - Le Figlie Della Tempesta
Genesis - Supper's Ready
Stratovarius - Destiny

OK, fine. Then I'll go ahead and take the most obvious one:

Cobalt - Two-Thumbed Fist (technically, it's three seconds short, but it's my thread so fuck off ;))

Fuck yes.
:bricks:

DethMaiden

Genesis - Supper's Ready

This is probably my favorite 10-minute plus song, because it's probably my second favorite song of all time after Hallowed Be Thy Name.

You actually like Warning better than Megalomania? Why? This is one of the believable, powerful lines I've ever heard uttered:

How could this poison be the dream of my soul?
How did my fantasies take complete control, yeah?

and how can you not believe this:

I hide myself inside the shadows of shame
The silent symphonies were playing their game
My body echoed to the dreams of my soul
It started something that I could not control...

If you know anything about the Sabotage album and why it is a masterpiece, those lines couldn't possibly be more telling. Megalomania is EPIC! hahaha

I was just listening to one of my favorite instrumentals and it qualifies:

Chimaira - Implements of Destruction

Incredible main riff!

You actually like Warning better than Megalomania? Why?

Because 'The Writ' kicks its arse, and 'Warning' does the same in turn.

And to be technical for a moment, 'Megalomania' isn't ten minutes long, 'Warning' is.

And I'll take "War Pigs" and "Symptom of the Universe" over all those, ten minutes be damned. :horns:

Free Bird > You

Here is the problem with Free Bird - and listen up, JRA - this is why you don't know what the hell you are talking about, either:

It is the most overrated rock song, ever. EVER.

I have spent my entire life - or at least the last thirty years - listening to drunken idiots howl away at that song, and most of them don't even know why it is good, or why they like it, or whatever. They just know they are supposed to howl SSSHHHFFFFFRRRRRREEEEEE BBBBBUUUUUURRRRRGGHHHH when it comes on the jukebox at the ol' watering hole, and it has just become ENOUGH ALREADY.

You too will feel this way someday. Trust me. The shit just. Gets. Old.

Fuck that fucking song.

That said, I love to go to smallish metal shows - especially ones that feature stoner metal bands and the like - and howl "FREE BIRD!!!" at an unexpected point in between a couple of songs. It always makes people laugh (mostly because they realize I'm being totally ironic). I cracked Matt Pike up with that one at the Grog Shop a few weeks ago - it was classic. :D

No. You totally missed the point (not that that surprises me).

...and who the hell said anything about fucking FRAT BOYS?!?!?

I was talking about hillbilles and bikers, primarily - which is why you still don't get it. You're a kid. You haven't been around long enough to see what a bane that song has been on society, so as I said, you don't know what the hell you are talking about.

...and lastly, the reason why Matt Pike and a whole bunch of other folks at the show laughed when I yelled it is that - as I said above - they realized I was being IRONIC. That's not the same as being one of the people I was bitching about. That would be hypocritical. They get it - you don't. Again, I'm not surprised. All you ever seem to be interested in is being contradictory and picking fights, which is what started this whole sidebar in the first place, and it's why I don't take your posts seriously anymore.

I lump hillbillies, bikers, fratboys, and ironic behavior all under the same category of stupid. It doesn't matter if it's being ironic or not, the guy who shouts "freebird" is at concerts is still annoying.

So you've had to deal with 30+ years of people ruining a song- my condolences.

As for your last point, why would I pick fights with you? I barely know you. I've been around here for a long time, and I'm sure quite a few people could tell you that I very seldom pick fights, nor do I purposely contradict people for the sake of spite. I may post asinine, immature comments that are usually only funny to me and quite a few failed attempts at humor (my last post being one such attempt), but I'm certainly not an asshole.

Im just gonna say I enjoy Free Bird, its like Stairway to Heaven to me, its a cool sing along to bust out at parties, its fun to play on guitar, and its an epic song. But Im gonna agree with Nat, If any of the bigger rock songs from my generation got as much drunken attention from people that clearly dont realise why its good, or even listen to Skynyrd (I own a 3 disc box set, and Iv listened to free bird like 3 times outside of learning it on guitar) I'd be sick of hearing it.. Nat, was Giant Squid's Metridium Field ever put on this list? Totally Fucking Rock, check, 10+ minutes long, double check, it's 20+ minutes....Nope, I don't think it ever was. Probably the reason I didn't think of it myself was that it gets pretty repetitive and droney, but then again, the primary purpose of the song is to get into this long, drawn-out groove that just seems to go on forever like the ocean which inspires all of Giant Squid's work, so maybe I didn't give it enough consideration when it first occurred to me. Fuck it - it's on the list now! :D

idrinkwine732
01-28-2010, 07:09 AM
I think only a certain audience is prone to it's awesomeness. I think the repetetive and droniness isn't important when you have the Sax and the solid minute or two of vocals thrown in there. I can't get enough of that song.

Bottom line is this:

Any of the songs he posted which do happen to totally fucking rock...are almost entirely due to mere coincidence.

If you look at the time of my post which resurrected this thread (12:50) and the time of his post (1:20), he did the whole list of however many songs in about twenty minutes (thirty minutes tops, assuming that he saw the thread on the "New Posts" list at the exact same instant that I made my post).

That is almost proof positive that all he did was sort his i-Tunes by track length and just cut & paste everything that was greater than ten minutes (maybe he picked his favorite artists out of the list, but still). No way can you come up with a truly well-thought-out list of over thirty ass-kicking songs in only fifteen to twenty minutes.

In all honesty if I were to make a list of the songs for myself, it wouldn't take that long. It would basically be looking at all the 10+ minute songs and picking the ones I really think rocked... I mean its obvious that he didn't post every 10+ minute song he owns... the guy is a big dream theater fan... that was not every 10+ minute dream theater song... I know there's more than that.
