View Full Version : Females in metal that really BRING IT!!!

Well, you read the thread title...go!

(BTW, Cristina Scabbia may be hot, but she does not belong on this list - the list is for females that BRING IT!!!)

I'll start, with just three of my favorites:

Julie Christmas - Made Out of Babies, Battle of Mice, Spylacopa
Angela Gossow - Arch Enemy
Laura Plesants - Kylesa

EDIT: Make that four.

Jackie Gratz - Giant Squid, Grayceon, Amber Asylum

Julie Christmas and Jackie Perez-Gratz are definitely the biggest two for me personally. Grace Perry from Landmine Marathon and Angela Gossow both have some pretty massive death metal vox, not just for women but in general. And who doesn't love Pamela Moore's duet with Tate on "Suite Sister Mary"?

I'm not a really big Queensryche fan, but I'd bet this was a pretty epic performance to a Queensryche fan just as the show where Karyn Crisis performed her vocals from "Throwing a Donner Party at Sea" was to a Giant Squid fan such as myself. Do you have a link to a video? I couldn't seem to find anything on YouTube...

...and by the way:

Karyn Crisis - Crisis

EDIT: Grace Perry - fuck yes. Nice call. That chick can wail. Another one like that is Mel Mongeon of Fuck the Facts...I was an instant convert when I saw them open for Converge (?) last year. :rocker::rocker::rocker:

 I figured that somebody would mention her within the first five posts. You did it in two.

She's easy on the eyes (as is Pamela Moore), and she has certainly put in her time (25 years!), but I was looking for someone who brings the energy just a little more than that. Still, she's a legend - I'll give her that. :D

I guess I didn't get the memo that a female needs to growl or do harsher vocals to "bring it". IMO, Floor has a more powerful voice than just about any of the others mentioned here, and though I haven't seen most of the girls mentioned here live, she also has a larger stage presence than most of the vocalists I've seen.

Maybe we just have different concepts of "bring it", :D

Aw, yeah. Reminds me of Paz Lenchantin - she played a killer bass for A Perfect Circle as well.

...and speaking of female bass players who kick ass - I'm ashamed that none of you have mentioned Jo Bench from the mighty Bolt Thrower. Now she herself has admitted that she's not the best bassist in the world (probably just being humble), but the band she is in is a major powerhouse of grindcore, and her part is just as valid as any other. Nice. This reminds me of another one. Speaking of chicks who pull vocal duties only occasionally, but who handle it extremely well...I saw (unfortunately) some bits and pieces of Winds of Plague's set at Summer Slaughter this year, and even though I'm not a big fan of the band - and even less of a fan of their douchebag fans - I have to admit that their keyboardist Kristen Randall really brought the fire in their closing song. She picked up a mic and stalked around the stage like a pissed off jungle cat - screaming at the top of her lungs and shit. She really surprised me. Still don't really like the band, but Kristen was a nice treat. She brought it. :rocker:

Jesus fucking Christ, yes. She basically has no place in this thread (I'm pretty familiar with the wuss-core that is Epica), but gawd DAMN is she hot. Prolly hotter than Cristina.

BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT THIS THREAD IS ABOUT, DAMMIT!!! SOMEBODY MAKE A "HOT CHICK" THREAD IF WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT THAT!!!

There's absolutely nothing "core" about Epica.
You're right. The "core" moniker is a bit overused - but, what I was trying to say was that Epica is basically the exact opposite of "badass" (which is basically the topic of this thread). It is beautiful, and beautiful metal has its place, too (although that place generally isn't my CD shelf - unless it's post-rock), but beautiful metal and this thread are just two different things. If Explosions in the Sky or This Will Destroy You had women in them, they still wouldn't make this thread - even though I like those bands very much. Does that help clear things up?

Sorry - I didn't mean to belittle any music of which you might be a fan.

(I might do it in a different context, but not in this thread, and not in the comment which you quoted above. ;))

JuuKun

EDIT: Ya know, that wasn't half bad. That's as close as opera gets to death metal, anyway. Cool song. In the hands of lesser songsmiths, this mixture of genres could have been complete rubbish. These folks pull it all off quite nicely, though.

Natrlhi

Here are a couple more:

G. Amber Valentine - Jucifer

Musically, they are all over the map, but there's definitely both metal and punk all over their sound. The band is simply a married couple - she sings and plays guitar, and he plays drums. That's it. But they make a hell of a lot of cool-sounding noise together.

Cheshire Agusta - Stinking Lizaveta

Another unique band - a couple of brothers, and a female drummer who brings the heat. They are an "instru-metal" stoner-y trio who is very obviously influenced by the greats (Zeppelin, among others). They have a new album out called "Sacrifice & Bliss" - check 'em out for something completely different.

Speaking of female drummers, there is another trio worth checking out...Seattle's Helms Alee. He (Ben Verellen) plays guitar and sings. She (Dana James) plays bass and sings. She (Hozoji Annie Matheson-Margullis) plays drums and sings. All three of them bring it. What a trio - very much in the vein of Torche, or a host of their other labelmates at Hydra Head, these folks are an up-and-coming force to be reckoned with. Check out their debut LP "Night Terror" - it's fantastic.

Word. I "obtained" some of their stuff last night, and I love it. They are also friends / associates with many other musicians / bands that I love (Giant Squid, Grayceon, Asunder, Amber Asylum, Kylesa, Wolves in the Throne Room, Jarboe...), so that's cool as well. I just got another one...thanks to Mankvill. Hey buddy - did you know that Gorod had a female drummer for their first two albums? The new one doesn't have her on it (it's some dude who is also way good), but her name is Sandrine, and she's a short, stout little firecracker of a French chick who can absolutely whale on those fucking skins. It would be interesting to see if she joins up with some other death metal outfit now that she has left the Gorod unit...she is really, really good.

I have been struggling as to whether to add Maria Brink to this list. I saw a video of In This Moment's cover of Blondie's "Call Me" last night on the tube, and I have to say, I kinda liked it. Maybe it's because I always thought Blondie was kind of "pre-punk" and cool, but this cover was pretty OK. Maria doesn't necessarily "bring it" on this tune, but it just brought up the subject in my mind as to whether she belongs on this list or not.

On the one hand, In This Moment's material is sometimes a bit girlie (to me). On the other hand, this chick can really scream her damn fool head off when she wants to. On the other hand, Maria's presence at the front & center of this band is obviously a bit of a marketing tool. On the other hand, she has lots of awesome ink all over her body, and I think this woman is the real deal at least in terms of being both a fan of metal and a musician within the genre.

So maybe it comes down to this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPiFS76_QQs&feature=related

That should do it, huh? I guess she's in. :D

Yeah, I saw Justine at Summer Slaughter this year - she was manning (or "womanning"?) their merch table for most of the show, but at the time I was not familiar enough with their material to go up to her and be all like, "I love your stuff...you guys rock...etc.". But I heard from multiple folks that they were / are really good. Elizabeth Elliott: Vocals/Guitars (Dreaming Dead)Hell yes, bro! This chick plays a wicked geetar, and does hellish good vocals at the same time! That ain't easy...just ask Muhammed Suicmez (although granted, she's no Muhammed). ;)

and theres a girl bassist in all that remains i think.
Now this one I'm gonna have to question, since you weren't even sure about it. ;) Yes, they do have a female bassist, but I don't know enough about them to know if she "brings it", or if she just simply plays bass and has a pikachu (Chelsea Handler reference).

But Elizabeth Elliott - hell yes. All day long. Nice.

EDIT: They are coming to Cleveburg in January with Nile, Immolation & Krisiun! I'm so fucking there. Nice call, bro - glad you posted this.

Really liking this Jex Thoth album. Way, way psychedelic. It's throwback shit to be sure - way the fuck back. Nice. Very, very groovy (both in the 70's sense of the word, and the literal sense, as in possessing great grooves or hooks :D). Very fucking cool.

FOOTNOTE: She "brings it", but it's just at about 5 mph max. :D Nice pipes, though.

G. Amber Valentine - Jucifer

Musically, they are all over the map, but there's definitely both metal and punk all over their sound. The band is simply a married couple - she sings and plays guitar, and he plays drums. That's it. But they make a hell of a lot of cool-sounding noise together.Inspired by recent events: just checking to make sure Gazelle Amber Valentine is on here.

Oh, and @Mike, I knew when I made the comment that she was already on the list, but I was hoping nobody would remember. :D

As I recall, I put her on there reluctantly, because I didn't want it to be just because of her looks (which are obviously astounding). Her voice is great, no question there, but posting only a photo and saying nothing else at all is pretty much making it all about her looks and not about her voice, as far as I'm concerned - hence my comment. :D
