This show is being advertised at The Rave in Milwaukee...

http://therave.com/concert_details.asp?id=3982

I don't know if there's been an official announcement yet, but I thought I'd share this with everyone.

 Yeah, probably. I think their music continues to kick ass, and I could really care less about image, but touring with Dethklok kinda makes me think Mastodon find metal funny despite being one of the absolute best bands playing it.

I'd like to see Dethklok try to pull the "heaviest ever" schtic following High on Fire.

Have you been reading the magazine interviews they've been doing? I remember Brent was all like "LOL WE AREN'T METAL WE'RE ART ROCK!" like a douchebag. Before those interviews I felt sorry for him because of all he's been through but now he's just trying to purposely push buttons.

They're not totally wrong, but I think describing one's own band as "art rock" or "progressive" is kind of douchey regardless of what the band sounds like. The listener will decide if that's what you are, you don't need to throw it in the faces of, in Mastodon's case, the METAL fans who got you where you are today. Sure, they're a prog metal act through and through and have been since Leviathan, but they don't seem to have the same attitude anymore.

Or it could just be Brent because he's a drunken asshole and Troy, Brann, and Bill are still chill and excellent dudes.

It's ironic that Mastodon was formed at a High on Fire show, and High on Fire is the last band on the bill.

The 'poster' in the link has them co-headlining, it's also presented by Adult Swim. I don't think they could care less about set times or order as long as Dethklok gets as much publicity as it can.

That is interesting. I did not know that. And surely Converge would be the 1st band to play with High On Fire 2nd. Right?

I guess it doesn't really matter. If Dethklok plays last I can catch HOF and Mastodon and then leave early.

I would have thought so but HoF was rightmost on the bill. We'll see how it works out.

And I would probably stay a while to watch, but not stick around for the whole set.

I wouldn't be so sure. The last Dethklok tour sold out all over the place, including a 1,500 capacity venue here in Seattle. Mastodon sold out in Seattle as well, but at a venue that holds 500. I thought the Dethklok tour was great - you can't go wrong with Keneally on guitar and Hoglan on drums.

TonyD
08-03-2009, 05:03 PM
The last Mastodon tour was intentionally booked at small venues, and they should only be drawing bigger crowds last time because of the people that missed out last time and the new album.
The last Dethklok tour was the first tour to hit pretty much everywhere, not just 10-15 college campuses. It sounded like it was just as much for fans of the show as it was for fans of the music. Now that the awe factor of a Dethklok show is gone and everyone knows there won't be any deaths during the performance, it should only draw as many or less than the last time.

08-03-2009, 05:55 PM

Now that's just plain ignant (sic).

High on Fire is indirectly linked to Mastodon's very existence (see post above), and they rock balls. Matt Pike is generally recognized as one of the best Iommi-esque guitar players out there, and he's a cult hero. He plays a nine-string Les Paul, for fuck's sake!?!

Converge is one of the premier hardcore bands out there today. Ask anybody who likes hardcore (and maybe you don't, but many folks do) who is one of the best hardcore bands in the modern era, and I guarantee you you'll get Converge in the list of the best of the best. I'm not even that big a fan, but I saw them last year at a show with Baroness and they slayed. Their vocalist is a fucking animal (on crack). So good.

Even Dethklok is pretty damn good. As was already said, any band with Gene Hoglan in it can't be all that bad. Plus, they are a parody of themselves (as is the entire Metalocalypse TV show), and they know it. That's not to say they suck, it's just saying that they are having fun with their material, and they're not bad musicians at all.

This promises to be an awesome tour - I just hope I can make it happen when the time comes. :snivel:
