View Full Version : Metal Setlists Meetup

So, this is an idea that we posted about for some time then everyone forgot, but I just want to reanimate the idea and gauge people's enthusiasm. By my estimations, this here site went live in August of 2004. As a result, I feel that in August of 2014 we should have a ten year anniversary party for Metal Setlists. Y'know, everybody meet in some city and see a band that a reasonable amount of us like, have some brews and some grub and talk metal and hang out and so on and so forth. It'd be awesome to meet the more regular members on here, and hey, we could have it in Kansas or somewhere stupid like that so even mankvill won't be left out. ;)

Thoughts?

Hahaha. I don't know if the Palin Patrol will let a subversive heavy metal party take place in her fair country.

I dig that idea a lot! Would be pretty cool to have that occur, especially at a show and whatnot (unless I'm not considered a regular member and I'm opted out) :eyes:

I'm always down for seeing shows with people, so sure. The only band I could see everyone wanting to meet up for though is Maiden, hopefully they're still around by then.

Yeah it'd probably have to be Maiden, that'd be fitting anyways since most of the people here who are regular members came from the IMBB. I doubt they'll still be kickin in 2014 though, maybe when they announce the farewell shows in like 2012.

By law of user concentration, northeastern US would be the obvious location to do this. I think we have the most people on this board from New York/New Jersey. A handful of Florida and California people, and most of the rest are just scattered.
And, not that I think I would have any say, but I would advise against doing it at a show. Sure, it gives everyone more incentive to come, but for someone like me, who is always concerned with being up front, waiting in lines for hours for GA stuff, etc. It's not practical to be concerned with a meet-up on the same day.
My personal suggestion would be to pick a location near the most members on the board, and have someone rent a pavillion for the day, split the costs between all attending members (would come out pretty cheap) and just throw a big get-together there.

I'm totally in for something in 2014 assuming I'm not sick of you fuckers by then.

But, yeah, Maiden33's right, it'd make a lot more sense to be in the northeast. How's about you all come visit me and Sinfulsot up here in Rhode Island? :)

But I like his idea about the pavilion-renting too. I'm hoping I'm finally in a functioning band by that time, so maybe we could grab a few bands who have members from here and put our own show together, instead of meeting at a show.

Yep, but minus the camping for me. That holds absolutely zero attraction.

I've done the Sweden Rock Festival (four days, outdoors) three years running and this week will be going to Gods of Metal in Italy (two days, open-air stadium). Also went to Monsters of Rock in Milton Keynes (England) in 2006.

Then Hard Rock Hell in Wales in December (indoors).

If NYC is actually selected, I think it would be to just about everyone's benefit to pick somewhere else, like New Jersey or something. Going into NYC is a whole lot of fucking money. It costs $10 just to get into the city as opposed to just outside of it, parking will rape you, and absolutely everything costs more there. Hell, I'm 90 minutes away by car, and I'm not even sure I'd feel like spending the cash just to deal with NYC.

But who? On a normal day, as in, a day when Iron Maiden, Heaven and Hell, Judas Priest, or any other big-tent metal band isnt playing, i doubt we'll find a band that everyone wants to see. Granted, this is 5 years in the future....

A week ago you were talking about leaving the site, now you're talking site meet up.
I guess that's the... power of metal :LOLFC:

I'm still thinking about / planning on leaving, just trying to phase myself out, coming here a little less all the time. The problem I think is that there are a lot of parts of this board I would rather not ever deal with again, yet there are a few aspects of it I like and don't want to leave behind.

And on the subject of the concert thing. I still think it's a bad idea. I would rather have a day-long meet-up/party sort of thing than worry about seeing a show. If it's a band I want to see, I don't give a fuck about meeting anyone, and if it's a band I don't want to see, I don't feel like paying a whole bunch of extra charges when I really just want to hang out.

Then maybe you don't get front row once in your life. And if you don't wanna go, we'll hang out until and then just don't come. I don't see why a website about METAL SETLISTS shouldn't go to a place where one will be played.

It does sound kind of mean, and here's an alternative: two-day meetup, Day One hanging out, Day Two heavy metal concert show.

Well, I guess I should rephrase:

If I'm going to see a band I want to see, I only care about meeting with people if it doesn't interfere with my plans otherwise. If it's a case of meeting up with 2 people at a show, that's fine, I've done that before. But there's no way to budget for time to have a massive get together and actually accommodate my rituals of going to most shows within one day. The two day thing is a solid idea, though. But here's how I feel:
If it's some band like Judas Priest who I like and would want to see but not give a damn about where I am in the crowd, when I get to the venue, etc, I could care less. Bring on the meet-up. However, if you guys wanted to do anything on the day of a Maiden show, I would have no part of it. Past two times I saw Maiden I got to the venue at 10am. Worth it both times.

This comment is probably indirectly referencing me, due to the fact that I dished out a fair amount of criticism of that set list. People piss me off when they act like "true fans" don't ever complain about anything. Finding criticism within the music you love is one sign of a true fan. I don't have anything against any of the songs Maiden played on that tour, I don't have anything against 85% of the songs the band has ever released. It's just a simple opinion of mine that even though I liked every song played on the SBIT tour, I think a few of them could've and should've been dropped in favor of a few other songs that better fit the intended format of the tour. I'm especially referring to the set list on the later portion.

New York would probably be the most convenient for the majority of the members on this board. Assuming this happens in 2014, after doing the math, I will be 18 that year and therefore out of the house and hopefully with a shitty car that can survive the drive over there :D

and I vote that we hang out during the day and see a metal show in the evening, or, we could do 2 days, but 2 days means more money :( to pay for hotel or motel.

And as for the band, I think the only way it would work if if it was one of JRA's TMP Top Tier Bands.

i.e. Iron Maiden, Metallica, Brokencyde, Megadeth, Slayer, etc.

Were not going to be able to agree otherwise.

If 70,000 Tons were in August, that'd be the thing to do. No way am I going to Barge To Hell though. Not unless I can entirely fill my time there with thrash bands that don't suck, Triptykon and Satyricon :finger2:

Chicago would be a good location. We have a bunch of people on the west coast so Chicago's closer to them than New York is. It's not too far from New York-area peeps, and there's also a lot of people in the midwest or Chicago itself.

Not to mention it's a fantastic city - lots of good food, live music, etc.

Not to mention it's a fantastic city - lots of good food, live music, etc.I actually agree with this. Chicago has two major airports, one of which is a hub for Southwest Airlines, one of the cheapest ways to fly in the states, and the other of which is a major international airport for our offshore friends. Speaking of which, Ravenheart is right - there are like half a dozen folks at most who might actually do this from outside the U.S., and everybody else resides here, so it would make sense to have it on this side of the pond for at least the first iteration.

If Ohio folks need a ride to Chi-town, we can pile into the Metal Van and I'll drive! :metal:

EDIT: ..and by the way, the food in Chicago is fucking incredible.

One thing I would say about the timing though, August is the WORST time for me to do this. Massively more expensive to fly to the US in August. Like, twice what it is most other months. At best. September would be better for me I think. And don't have more shows then anyway?
