Nice list. Some good bands on there, pissed I didn't get to see Quo Vadis.

Personally:

1. Destruction
And then, a far way behind
2. Primordial
3. Darkane
4. Moonsorrow
5. Children of Bodom
6. Korpiklaani
7. Wolves in the Throne Room
8. Rotting Christ
9. Swallow the Sun
10. Municipal Waste

Haven't seen too many shows so far this year. But the Destruction show, when you include everything - the setlist, the INSANE crowd, the band's performance, the atmosphere in the venue, it's above and beyond the best show I've seen so far this year, and one of my favorites from the few years I've been going to shows.

Kylesa
Mastodon
Meshuggah
Lamb of God (seriously)

Still looking forward to see if Clutch lives up to the hype

Ghoul
Cattle Decapitation
Toxic Holocaust
General Surgery
3 Inches of Blood
Phobia
Toxic Holocaust
A Band of Orcs
Call the Paramedics
Gigan

I've only been to 5 shows this year, so at the end of the year I'm betting only half of those bands will still be on the list. Some of them were definitely a stretch.

Still looking forward to see if Clutch lives up to the hype

That was me last December - long time fan, but had never seen 'em. I had a blast.

Surprisingly, it was one of the most brutal pits I've ever seen, and I've been in many a mosh pit dating all the way back to the Slayer / Anthrax / Exodus / M.O.D. days of the early-to-mid 80's! Those Clutch fans were either hammered drunk, criminally insane, or just plain had nothing to lose (or maybe all three). Lots of bloody noses and the like. Crazy.

But yeah, Clutch put on a hell of a good show. I think it's a much better experience if you're thoroughly familiar with their material, though.

Nat, we were at the same Clutch and Carcass shows. If I would have counted the Clutch show in '09, I certainly would have given full marks to Clutch (first time I'd seen them do Spacegrass!) and Russian Circles wouldn't have been far behind. I just wish I could have seen the stage through the fog.

:lol:LOL:lol: - I had just posted about this to DethMaiden and then I read your quote above. To answer your question, they are probably one of the best post-metal instrumental acts out there. They are a trio from Chicago (buds with Pelican and the like), and they are awesome. They really bring the house down live. When I saw them with Clutch last January, I was not sure how the "pure" Clutch fans would react, but I was very pleased to overhear not one or two, but several folks saying how good they thought Russian Circles was (I even convinced one of them to buy a CD! :D). They really know how to write a good, compelling song, and the energy and momentum they build is just unbeatable. The drummer is phenomenal. I highly recommend either Station or Enter (their two LP's) - they are basically interchangeable.

Natrlhi nailed it, I've seen them twice and they were really excellent both times. They write memorable songs with no vocals. And the drummer is indeed the standout.

Let's keep this one going - I'm interested to see what everybody else is seeing live, and what they like and don't like. I'll give this thread a bump by posting an updated list up to and including the last show I saw:

Newport Music Hall - Columbus, OH - 1/30/08

The most notable performances so far this year have been CARCASS, Cynic, Baroness, Matisyahu, Grayceon, and the Gates of Slumber, with "as usual" props for Opeth and Clutch who are among the best shows period and I will continue to regularly see them as long as they tour.

Most intense performance was YOB, funnest was probably Pentagram or Clutch. Most disappointing was Priest, most unmemorable was everything else  Death Angel were great at the Haight Street Fair too though.

Butcher of Birth

Amon Amarth

Those are the only 3 bands I've seen this year that stand out a lot thus far.

But come this fall I know Mastodon, Ensiferum, Eluviete, KISS, Motorhead, Alestorm will break that.

i actually didn't miss all of them i watched 10 or 15 min but i wasn't giving a full observation on them hence why i didn't rate them.
by the time behemoth came on i was very exhausted from being in the front for the other bands i had to leave the area to walk around, get fresh air, and get water from it being so hot. after that i watched some of them but it wouldn't be fair if i gave them a rating.

i wanted to see trivium but i left due to being very exhausted after black dahlia's set so i took a rest while listening to their music in the background.

i saw 10min of cannibal but left because i was meeting a group who had barely arrived to the show.

Let's see...

Metallica - 1/29
The Sword (7/10)
Machine Head (7.5/10, only cuz of their crappy sound, they were awesome the other four times I've seen 'em.)
Metallica (9.5/10)

Glenn Hughes - 3/28
Luke Mulholland (7/10)
Glenn Hughes (7.5/10)

Kreator - 4/8
Epicurean (4/10)
Warbringer (8.5/10)
Belphegor (5.5/10)
Exodus (9.5/10)
Kreator(9/10)

Lamb Of God - 5/8
Municipal Waste (8/10)
God Forbid (8/10)
Children Of Bodom (Okay, so this was the night where they couldn't finish their set because Alexi was in too much pain, so I can't really give 'em a score. They kicked ass when I saw them last year though.)
As I Lay Dying (8/10)
Lamb Of God (9.5/10)

Testament - 5/22
DTA (7/10)
Lazarus A.D. (8/10)
Unearth (7.5/10)
Testament (9/10)

:rocker:

Meh thinks it's time for a bit of an update...

Judas Priest - 7/12
Pop Evil (2.5/10)
Whitesnake (8/10)
Judas Priest (8.5/10)

AC/DC - 7-31
The Answer (6.5/10)
Anvil (3/10)
AC/DC (8.5/10)

Rockstar Mayhem '09 - 8/8
Whitechapel (5.5/10)
Behemoth (9/10)
God Forbid (4/10)
Trivium (8/10)
Cannibal Corpse (9.5 or 10/10)
Killswitch Engage (9/10)
Slayer (8.5/10)
Marilyn Manson (4/10)

Killswitch Engage - 8/29
Unearth (8/10)
Vision of Disorder (8.5/10)
All That Remains (7/10)
Killswitch Engage (8.5/10)

Trivium - 9/11
Dirge Within (7/10)
Darkest Hour (8.5/10)
Whitechapel (3/10)
Trivium (9.5/10)

These are just in the moment opinions by the way, so a band that got a higher rating than another at different shows might not necessarily mean that they are better live. Things are always different when you actually see the bands at the same show.

I've grouped by Oustanding-Great-Good-Subpar. No particular order beyond that. Yes, the tie for best show goes to a non-headliner and Lamb of God was better live than Cynic.
Baroness
Alice In Chains

Mastodon
Meshuggah
High on Fire
Lamb of God
Suicidal Tendencies
Kylesa
Clutch

Judas Priest -You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise?
Cynic - Well executed but low energy and too much new stuff for the first tour in 15 years

Children of Bodom
Municipal Waste - bad sound
BLS - bad set

^ I agree with you on Cynic, unfortunately. I love them on album, but they rather failed to impress live. That said, I'm still very glad to have seen them - if only just for the sake of nostalgia and respect. Luckily, Meshuggah kicked my ass and ground my brain into the dirt a half hour later, so all's well that ends well!

I saw Cynic twice this past year, once supporting Meshuggah and then on their first headlining US show in VA last May. They were a touch dissapointing supporting Meshuggah but they were great as headliners. Paul had fun with the crowd and they busted out stuff like Eagle Nature even though they had barely rehearsed it, that was fun.

I have a clear-cut top five but I'm going to at least four more shows this year so we'll see if it gets shaken up:

1. Carcass
2. Cynic
3. Grayceon
4. Between the Buried and Me
5. Baroness

Note that all of these sets except for Carcass were support sets. Go figure. Seeing BTBAM headline next month might make that set take the place of the support set.

It's too hard to put all the shows in order so I'll use Tony's method.

Outstanding:
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Heaven & Hell
Alice Cooper
Kiss
Mastodon

Great:
Satyricon
Carcass
Primordial
Mayhem
Asphyx
Motorhead
Bolt Thrower
Deicide
Cynic (2nd time)

Good:
Vital Remains
1349
Pentagram
Samael
Suidakra
Alestorm
Kreator
Exodus
Korpiklaani
Testament
Atheist
Napalm Death
Aura Noir
Destroyer 666
Hail of Bullets
Marduk

Subpar:
Wino
Cynic (1st time)
Meshuggah
Tyr
Moonsorrow

A whole lot in the good column but just because it was good doesn't mean it was average, a lot of them were amazingly fun but just don't quite stand out as much as the higher ranked shows.

Holy shit guys. Metallica actually belongs on this thread again. And that's not me gushing because they are Metallica. That's me having seen them for the fifth time last night, and being totally blown away. The boys are back - and Trujillo is a nice addition to the Metalli-family, by the way. He has the look and attitude down pat. Very awesome show.

You're correct. :D

The way I see it, a five is pretty much a gentle kick in the teeth anyway - and although most of WoP's fans deserve just that (or maybe more than a gentle kick), their keyboard player pretty much lifted them from a five to a six just because she's hot and could really belt out some badass screams. I still pretty much hate deathcore, though.

Are you saying that the keyboard player has left? Oh well, I wasn't going to go and join their fan club anyway, I'm just saying I gave the other performances a five and theirs a six because of her. Now if they played a show and I had to witness it without her, I'd probably give WoP a two. Maybe. :D

It doesn't even offend the metal in me, Bono is just in the running for biggest douche on earth.
I really hope this doesn't turn into a big flame war, but I have to disagree with you here. The guy had the balls to meet with the leaders of several of the richest nations in the world and tried to convince them to forgive the debts of some of the poorest countries in the world who were too challenged with keeping their people alive to be able to pay off the debts. He and the rest of the band are also involved in many, many other charitable causes, most of which have to do with fighting either poverty or disease. How can you slam a guy for doing that? The problem is that many people who believe in and work for such causes may come off to the mainstream like tree-huggers or possibly even whiny bitches (although I've never seen Bono whine about anything per se), but at heart they are trying to do the right thing. The guy believes in freedom and equality of all people everywhere - I just don't see that as douchey. Unrealistic, maybe. Idealistic, maybe. Douchey? Not in my book.

I'm not calling the guy a saint, but for Satan's sake he sure isn't a douche to me. Some may say that he keeps an awful lot of that money for himself, and I don't know enough about his finances to confirm or deny that. The entire band probably live very well - I'll admit that. But then again, so does Obama. So did George W. Bush (and still does - forever). So do many other musicians who have had the success U2 has - but I can damn sure tell you this...NO BAND anywhere, ever has done as much to help the world - or at least try to - than has U2. None. Anywhere. Ever.

So, douchey? No. Sorry. Wrong answer.

(It finally seems we have found something to disagree on, Tony. :(;) At least it wasn't music - just politics...I guess.)

Yeah, basically. I'm allowed to grow a beard, get a tattoo, and dress like a hobo who likes Sabbath, but I expect my women to look "normal".

I don't consider what I posted the "metal chick" look. That's fat girls wearing corsets and fishnet stockings with dyed hair and multiple tattoos/facial piercings.

My input:

To me, the tired stereotyple of "metal chick" is not hot, because it definitely puts the attempt to be overly metal before being hot/attractive. When you take an average looking girl and give her tattoos, piercings, dyed hair, certain clothing, etc it doesn't make her attractive. That's what most of these cases are, to be honest.
That being said, I have seen cases of girls who are actually really genuinely good looking/attractive who happen to listen to metal and have elements of looking metal (pick one of the aforementioned elements), and I think when done that way, it's just about the hottest thing out there.

Dextrimental
10-19-2009, 03:47 PM
I'm gonna agree with Maiden (first time for everything eh?) Most girls iv seen who're into metal will try and have the tattoos, the piercings, the fashion and everything else thats considered 'metal' on them at once, an it jus dont work. Whereas, as is the case wit my current girlfriend, and my ex girlfriends, they weren't trying too hard, and only had one or two of the features mentioned above, thus making them alot more attractive, as their natural beauty shone through alot more..

Haha, true. Too bad the only part of that description I fit is the beard and liking Sabbath.

My chick is not really a metal chick, more a ska chick with some punk, but every now and then she'll wear a maiden or death shirt. my point: i wouldn't trade a beautiful girl that wears maiden shirts for a beautiful girl that wears holister or whatever else is the stereotype nowadays.

the chick is hot, no question about that, but she'd be alot more attractive if you couldnt see her bones poking out under her skin.

The music was sweet too. It was probably the second-loudest set I've seen this year behind Zoroaster's, and just a bit louder than Isis. They didn't put breaks between songs or anything so I'm not really sure what they played but there were lots of doom parts and lots of grind parts. It was sweet.

I thought I went to more shows this year... I remember skipping Mayhem in June because Marduk, Cattle Decapitation and every other band on the bill dropped off the tour a week before the show, then there was Canadian Carnage in November that was postponed due to Tom Araya from Slayer hurting his back (how metal), and there were a few non-metal shows I won't mention.

May
Enslaved (9/10)
Opeth (7/10)

May
Car Bomb (5/10)
the Cariot (8/10)
Gojira (9/10)

May
Trap Them (6/10)
Collisium (4/10)
Toxic Holocaust (7/10)
Kataklysm (6/10)
Napalm Death (8/10)

August
Zappa Plays Zappa (1/10)
Dream Theater (6/10)

September
Weedeater (8/10)
Voivod (2/10)
Down (7/10)
the Melvins (N/A) (the only reason I bought tickets for this show but they refuse to play Canada)

September
Warbringer (7/10)
the Berzerker (8/10)
Krisiun (8/10)
Goatwhore (6/10)
Obituary (10/10)

October
High On Fire (N/A) (missed)
Converge (N/A) (missed)
Mastodon (8/10)
Dethklok (7/10)

November
Star Wars in Concert (8/10)

So Obituary was my favorite live band this year, followed by Enslaved and Gojira. I wasn't too into the Chariot at the time but I give them such a high ranking because their performance was entertaining. The best show was definatly the last one with Obituary, Krisun and the Berzerker.

All these shows were in Toronto, mostly at the Opera House.

Can I get an reason for that? Not trying to start anything its just out of morbid curiosity.. I don't see how anyone couldn't like Zappa...

Just sayin', there's a LOT to dislike about Zappa if you're not into what he brings. I love prog rock (almost to a fault) and I'm not into Zappa in the least.
