You know what's even trendier than Macs? These sorts of bullshit accusations that there's some grand cool kid conspiracy in favor of Macs. I have read way more rants against Mac users than rants by Mac users. I am a diehard iPod user and iTunes user, and all of the journalism labs at my college are Mac labs. I'm getting pretty sick of the assertion that Mac owners have to be trendy people; I'm certainly not trendy, and I'm pretty sure few if any of my professors will be.

ChildrenofSodom

There is an aura about Apple though. Their commercials promote, and their users reek of it. I've never used one, but from the people I know who have, they either a) think they are equal in usefulness or worse than PCs or b) think they are far superior and are dicks about it.

For example, one of my brother's friends was making the point that the degree to which you can change things (customize) on a Mac is much less than a PC. Anyone want to verify/dispell that? I know that Apple rapes when it comes to iPods and are super protective, to the point of incompatibility. And the great divide between Microsoft and Apple forces everyone to pick a side. Why should a college student be forced to pick one or the other, just for school work?

Div
06-04-2009, 01:19 PM
I take it you haven't been on enough hardware forums to see it then, or just look at all the hipsters on youtube. There seems to be a loyalty to anything with an apple logo on it by these people, even if theres better hardware/software out there they will still try to convince themselves that mac is so great. my biggest personal beef with them is that apple is more monopoly-like than even microsoft, but thats not really relevant here.

BTW, not trying to talk you out of buying your macbook, itll probably be good for college stuff, just wanted to add my :2cents: sense computer stuff is a hobby for me.

------

for cameron's comment, if youre just doing school papers than it doesnt matter what OS you use, whatever laptop is the lightest, quietest, and has the longest battery life is what youll want. but if you use your computer for lots of other stuff it becomes difficult on a mac.

games -
most games are not compatible with mac OS and they wont run on it. you can dual boot your mac to have windows on it, but this does two things. one, why waste harddrive space with two separate OS partitions? and two, you cant upgrade or modify a mac in any way unless apple does it for you, to get a mac that can run games will cost almost two or three times more than a pc counterpart and even then still wont be as good spec wise.

media -
i think itunes is a very poor music player compared to other freeware programs out there like foobar2000 and winamp. itunes only lets you play certain files and can even lock you out of your music, and has lower sound quality. with other players you can just play whatever file is in your folder, itunes has to sync it, convert it, and other unnecessary bullshit.

features -
while vista is a memory hog and has that wireless zero config bullshit you cant disable, mac has a shit ton more annoying features you cant disable because apple decided that this is whats best for you. mouse acceleration is something most people complain about. you also cant really skin osx very easily and you sure as fuck cant upgrade the hardware yourself.

the only things mac unarguably is superior to PC in is video editing, some HD cameras have problems transferring video on PC.

Macs are functionally pathetic and cost several hundred dollars more than laptops you can find with similar or better parts/makeup.

It IS trendy to own a Mac because they are pretty, and people who don't know shit about computers just want something pretty and think that the extra money must be worth it. The fact that people would actually pay for one at all just goes to show...

edit: Also, computers exist to do what you tell them. Macs exist to stop you from telling it what to do. What's up with that?

The only file format I've seen that has to be converted is .wma, and I come across that very rarely. A lot of iTunes stuff is DRM-free now, and even if it wasn't, I don't buy stuff from iTunes anyways, so who cares. And as for the sound quality, I'm not some nut-job audiophile, so I'm don't notice any difference.

I think both systems are about equal in this regard, so I don't think it matters a whole lot.

the first two issues you stated are understandable. if you dont play games or want to tweak the hell out of your audio settings its personal preference. but at the same time youre kind of admitting that you're paying more for mac which has less features, even if theyre not features you care about.

the last point you make about them being equal is just incorrect.

i wasnt trying to tell people what to buy, but if anyone was going to buy a mac they should atleast know the bad side, becuase theyre not going to tell you about it in a mac store. or atleast dont buy one thinking that its superior to a PC.

1) I thought we were getting off gasoline.
2) Who wants to pay 89,000 for a car?

if i could afford to budget 90k for a car i would buy a porsche or a used M5 before i bought an expensive prius. (people who can afford $90k cars arent concerned with gas prices)

but lets say it does get 100mpg. that means if you commute 50 miles to work and 50 miles home every week day, and the car has a standard 14 gallon tank, you could go about two and a half weeks before needing to refill your tank (1400 miles). assuming gas is $3 per gallon, it would cost 42 bucks to fill up. you'd spend about $63 on gas every month.

now if you bought a car that gets 25mpg and has the same tank size, youd go 350 miles before needing to fill up. so given the same commuting distance you'd end up refilling twice a week, spending $336 on gas a month.

but if you're paying off a $90,000 car it will cost you $2500 a month for 3 years. the gas for those 3 years would cost you $2268, meaning transportation fees for those 3 years total to about 93k.

but lets say you spent 30k on the car that gets 25mpg. it will end up costing you $833 a month for 3 years and youll spend $12,096 on gas. bringing the total cost of transportation for those 3 years to $42,096. you can afford this car and its fuel twice over before purchasing one goremobile.

also, if you're commuting 100 miles a day, that means by the end of those 3 years your car will have about 110,000 miles on it, and will be starting to get worn out.

Yeah...haha..I'm expecting that. Its 250 bucks, and all the kids I've seen in it so far are pretty preppy and rich. Some douchehats. I mean, watch the video.
(http://fye.osu.edu/lc.html) With the hair, the poorness, the dirtiness, and the metalness (?), I'm gonna stick out like a sore thumb. Should be fun. :D

ugh... these are the assholes who become RA's and think that I'm gonna take some 18 year old seriously when they tell me it's too late to have friends in my room.

eventually they graduate and become like this http://www.ivygateblog.com/2006/10/how-not-to-apply-for-a-job-in-i-banking/

Yeah, I'm not gonna douche out. I just want to be able to talk to people better, communicate effectively, and build a resume so I can get a good political job. This shit looks good, at least.

Honestly I'm really fucking nervous right now. Tomorrow night I have a date with a girl I went to school with that I had regretted not asking out in the past, but recently have come back into contact with and decided to go for it. I don't have a ton of experience in this area, and I really really like this girl from what I already know about her.

Yeah, I figure all this stuff is pretty much a given. I'm not really sure WHY I'm so nervous, given two things. The first being that this girl and I already have a lot in common, some shared interests, etc so general conversation topics shouldn't be very hard to come by. And also, the truly difficult part for myself is over. I found a girl who is interested enough in me to actually seem to express mutual interest. I am pretty confident with my personality that I think I can deliver under these circumstances with the initial ice already broken.

Okay, I need to know: Do girls like being nerd checked?

Explain

ChildrenofSodom
07-02-2009, 08:40 PM
Explain Long Story:

I have been debating this moderately-attractive chick on the Ohio State Facebook group, about religion, and we even though we disagree we are getting along pretty well (on the internet, granted, but whatever). Outside of that debate, I was talking about how hard it was to convert people to Dark Side (atheism) and then we traded Star Wars allusions. I finished mine by saying " haha...I love Star Trek."

If she responds with "lulz, itz Star Wars" is it a good idea to drop in the 'nerd check?' Mind you, I have already set up the joke and to play it off as a mistake would make me look like an idiot.

So, the questions stands.

In case anyone is curious about my aforementioned date, which took place earlier tonight:
All in all it went quite well. Went to dinner, went mini-golfing, went for ice cream, then just spent some time talking for a while before I took her home. I honestly don't think there could have been any more conversational chemistry, but I somewhat expected that going in as I already knew the girl fairly well. No shortage of good conversation whatsoever. I had a lot of fun. However, I did find out some information about her that kind of makes things awkward at least for now. I'm glad she was open about it, but it just complicates things I guess. Nevertheless, she said she had a lot of fun and we'll be going out again.

Thanks? I guess? Haha. Unfortunately I am downright spectacular at mini-golf, so I went with a combination of not keeping score and showing her the tricks to all of the holes since I go to the course semi-often. I had thought about bowling as it levels the playing field, but as a one-on-one date I'm not extremely fond of it, since it gives you minimal time to spend talking and interacting directly with each other.
I'm just kind of restless now. I thought this combination of being really excited and really nervous would go away after tonight and the door would swing one way or the other, at least to an extent. But for now I'm still kind of in the same place, which is unfortunate. Because I really think I'm falling for this girl and the more I see her the more I really like her.

D.) dont get your hopes up until you meet in person, as you cant read voice tone and body language online and its impossible to tell if shes being flirty or just friendly.
