Slayer are definitely up there dude, even more than Metallica or Megadeth Id say, specially in extreme music. Like Slayer have always been consistent with their releases, alot more than megadeth and metallica..

Div

influential usually means back in the day when metal was taking off. metallica made the biggest impact out of the big four back in the 80's, and were the only one to really reach true mainstream acceptance.

Well i count influential as thaking in the bands entire career and how consistent they've been, and how many bands count them as influencing their music. And to me Slayer have done that more than Metallica, they've got the same amount of influence on modern bands, while releasing consistent records.

I still think Slayer outdoes them both, because I think that Slayer played a really large part in the beginnings of death metal and black metal. Moreso than either of the other Big Four thrash bands.

Easy there, Mike. I think NMH are way folkier than The Beatles, not to mention proggier, and it's a little tough to take complaints about a guy's singing voice from a big Tom Waits fan such as yourself (not a knock on Waits, but you've gotta see the difference between "bad" and "acquired").

I just dug up my Top 20 list from 2007. Here is what it was at the time

1.Down-Down 3:Over The Under
2.The Black Dahlia Murder-Nocturnal
3.Between The Buried And Me-Colors
4.3 Inches Of Blood-Fire Up The Blades
5.The Red Chord-Prey For Eyes
6.High On Fire-Death Is This Communion
7.Machine Head-The Blackening
8.The Dillinger Escape Plan-Ire Works
9.Muncipal Waste-The Art Of Partying
10.Skeletonwitch-Beyond The Permafrost
11.As I Lay Dying-An Ocean Between Us
12.Avenged Sevenfold-Avenged Sevenfold
13.Devildriver-The Last Kind Words
14.Queens Of The Stone-Era Vulgaris
15.Static-X-Cannibal
16.Megadeth-United Abombinations
17.Chimaria-Resurrection
18.Coheed And Cambria-No World For Tommorow
19.Arch Enemy-Rise Of The Tyrant
20.Through The Eyes Of The Dead-Malice

Pretty Good List in retrospect though now i would make a couple of adjustments...

New rule: Hulk Hogan trying out for Metallica is not that big of a goddamn deal. Seriously, it's not even worth speculating over. It would have beeen cute for about 10 minutes, then everybody would have been sick of it. Metallica themselves don't even think it's worth speculating over, why else would James have picked Les Claypool to talk about then him.

Well, I'd like IU to get $25,000, and I'd like to see Weezer to hear some of the songs that I loved when I was like 13 (and I like "Pork and Beans" too - haven't heard the new record though). Plus, we won a similar contest and got Girl Talk and Cobra Starship, so this is much better than that. :barf:

well to run games on max settings at a decent resolution youre gonna need about 10 to 12 hundred bucks for the hardware (not including monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, or anything external) which should get you a pretty kick ass system. nothing fancy like water cooling or anything, but enough to get the job done without cutting corners. depending on your parts you may be able to cannibalize some stuff from your current PC. otherwise youre looking at purchasing these components:

-case
-120mm fan
-80mm fan
-motherboard
-processor
-cpu heat sink
-thermal paste
-video card
-RAM
-power supply
-cd/dvd rom drive
-harddrive

then theres some optional stuff like: sound card, more harddrives for RAID arrays, LED's, uber cooling systems for overclocking, solid state drives, second video card for SLI, fancy case, gaming mouse/keyboard, etc.

if you have a decent credit rating you can get a montly payment plan from newegg. id wait till black friday to order your shit so you get good deals.

I wish people would stop comparing Slayer to Reign In Blood like it's a perfect album. It's easily their worst album up to Seasons.

I actually like Seasons a little less than Reign. I accept the fact that whenever you bring up Slayer in conversation Reign In Blood will follow, but it is certainly not the greatest metal album (let alone thrash metal) album of all time.

I disagree, its my favorite out of it, Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits, and that says alot, as I LOVE those albums. Its not so much the album content though, its the timing. Slayer were just on the rise, and Metallica were about to release their most experimental album to date, Megadeth were about to come onto the scene and Anthrax were on their way up too. Suddenly slayer release this absolute riff a thon, thats just solid fast as hell speed thrash metal from start to finish. If I was 14 years old, and I had just bout KIMB, Among the Living and Master of Puppets, RIB would've been like a sledge hammer!!

did you know?

in 1925 two dutch scientists by the names of Gorter & Grendel used acetone to extract the lipid membranes of red blood cells and then spread it out into one thin sheet. upon measuring the sheet they discovered that there was a 2:1 ratio of lipids compared to what was measured on the cells. thus proving that cell membranes are composed of a phospholipid bi-layer.

and now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

so im sitting in the dining hall eating lunch and these kids sit down at the end of the table next to me. for some reason i didnt have my headphones on today so i overheard their conversation, which was something like this... (keep in mind, both of them have pretty feminine sounding voices)

guy 1: hey did you ever read the book van hellsing?
guy 2: no, but i have the anime of it, its pretty cool

i laughed to myself in my head because the book and the anime are two completely different stories but they didnt seem to know that.

then somehow their conversation progressed into this...

"did you ever see that one called tenchi muyo? all these girls throw themselves at him and he never has sex with them!"
"i KNOW! i bought the dvds hoping to see that but it just didnt happen"

then the proceed to go through the cast of characters and comment on how hot each on was and how they would all totally bang them.

at this point i had to pull out my cell phone and pretend i was laughing at a funny text message so i didnt look like a douchebag.

Turns out Paul O'Neill must be a giant fan of this, because the operatic intro to "Streets" is straight from a song in the second act, and "Queen of the Winter Night" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra is just another arrangement of a song from it. Good time though, my first opera and probably not my last. :horns:

I just got out of a two hour argument with a guy who was telling me I am ignorant for

a) Not listening to other genres of music besides metal EVEN though I have listened to other genres and for the most part I just don't like them.

b) Being deeply devoted to metal and "dismissing" other genres, though very related to the first in theory.

Among other things, the guy said that most metalheads are ignorant and don't listen to other genres and have to commit themselves fully to the genre of music (which I replied that metal a connecting genre in which its fans develop an extremely bonding emotion, and that develops into somehwat of a lifestyle, unlike most other genres). This all came out by me watching the live Vader stream, and he said that the instrumentalists had merit, but the singer had absolutely no talent an he was just yelling at the top of his lungs, and because he thinks that's bad it is untalented. I proceeded to show him Vader's lyrics (he's a big rap fan, so he is one of those stupid lyrics are mad important and show a lot of the band's flow/cohesiveness) and he told me the lyrics to "Wings", "This Is The War", and "Litany" were garbage. "The Final Massacre" lyrics he said were "only OK". They are ridiculously good, and his stupid "I was a gangsta in the streets, brought up in Brooklyn 2-k AND WATT??" are more intellectual because they rhyme and have more flow. He also claimed metal has no cohesiveness and what the guitars are doing don't fit the bass which don't fit the drums which don't compliment the singer. I argued that they absolutely do, it's not like they just go up on stage and wank on their instruments, and he said "That's pretty much what it seems like". Ignorance is so bliss, I wanted to strangle him. He went on to call my opinions ignorant and my analogies/comparisons/statements stupid before I even said them, but I always keep my cool, but it was so tempting to just beat the shit out of the scrawny bastard.I am absolutely flabbergasted at the fact that is so ignorant enough himself to deny his ignorant belief of the aforementioned, and I HAD to post this here. You could have saved yourself a lot of time by playing him some Baroness. Those fellers are skilled musicians as well as awesome songwriters. There is absolutely no wankery going on in that band whatsoever. If he still thought all metal was garbage after that, and that all metalheads are morons, then obviously he is the close-minded individual and you can be fully convinced you are are arguing with someone who will never even try to see your point of view.

At that point you can punch him in the balls and walk away, because you know it isn't worth it, you were never going to convinve him of anything, and he deserves it for being a close-minded ape.

But that's just how I would have handled it. ;)

To bhalperin: I've dealt with it a lot too (not so much anymore, I'm in college :D), so this isn't the first time. But it's just when someone says something SO blatantly ignorant (e.g. singer has no talent, you should listen to other music and if you don't you're narrow-minded), it just got to me.

He sounds like a judgmental prick to me. I know you wanted to convince him that not all of us 'bangers are stupid, but with a guy like that you're never going to win, so what's the point?

I would just laugh if someone said some crap like that to me, because I'd just be sitting there thinking about how I'm a chemical engineer who got a 1470 on my SAT's and I'm making a very good living, and I could also crush his skull into dust if I wanted to, plus I have a beautiful wife and three-year old son who love me to death, and he's probably living at his mom's house in the basement getting his jollies by flaming twelve-year-olds on the internet to try to bolster his waning self-esteem.

It's usually around that point that I just laugh and give it up. Maybe I'll call him Chazz Reinhold and tell him to yell into the other room for his mom to make him some meat loaf (just to be a prick), and then I just let it go.

Created it on my own. I can't remember, but there was a drama thread on here somewhere and I got into an argument and endd up making this avatar.

But, as I said in another thread, Lamb of God is Iron Maiden when compared to deathcore bands!

This paragraph doesn't even come close to summing up my past two hours, but it does a fair job. SOMEONE please tell me I am not going out on a limb here,

I've been in this situation and it's extremely frustrating. My biggest problem is when people say something about "metal". You can't do that, metal has so much fucking variety and so many bands that you're hating either a stereotype of what you perceive metal to be or the limited group of bands you've heard. I guarantee that there's some metal band out there for everybody. Bold statements against metal just piss me off. Feel free to think you hate metal, but don't go up to the bearded dude in the Skeletonwitch shirt and denim vest to share your opinion. It's just gonna get ugly.

I too have had a similar experience, one of my best friends regularly makes ignorant statements towards metal, hell some of my friends who like metal do it too. And most do it without actually listenin to the bands I point out they should listen to. Its unavoidable, metal is such a huge thing even die hard metal fans will have a go at different aspects of metal and what not. Although in fairness I can understand it if its towards something like Death metal or Grindcore, because that stuff definitely isn't designed for the masses.

Around this time a few years ago, my friend sent me a batch of metal songs that totally changed my life forever. I'll try to remember some of those now. These are some of the first metal songs I ever heard:

Burzum - Key To The Gate
Darkthrone - En Vind Av Sorg
Xasthur - Tyrant Of Nightmares
Von - Satanic Blood
Ulver - Hymn VI (Of Wolf And Passion)
Vlad Tepes - Drink The Poetry Of The Celtic Disciple
Nokturnal Mortum - The Funeral Wind Born In Orian
Mutiilation - Travels to Sadness, Hate and Depression
Moonblood - Blut Und Krieg
Mithotyn - King Of The Distant Forest
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Marduk - Christraping Black Metal
Judas Iscariot - An Eternal Kingdom Of Fire
Immortal - Unsilent Storms In The North Abyss
Ildjarn - Whispering Breeze
Helstar - Baptized In Blood
Hellhammer - The Third Of The Storms
Graveland - In The Glare Of Burning Churches
Enslaved - Midgards Eldar
Emperor - Into The Infinity Of Thoughts (the intro used to scare the shit out of me)
Demoncy - Hidden Path To The Forest Beyond
Deathspell Omega - The Victory Of Impurity
Celtic Frost - Into The Crypts Of Rays
Blasphemy - Fallen Angel Of Doom
Belketre - Twilight Of The Black Holocaust
Antaeus - Inner War (truly terrified me back in the day)
Anorexia Nervosa - A Doleful Night In Thelema (my first metal song)
Anaal Nathrakh - Submission Is For The Weak

Never been the same since. :light:

Understandable. I fight with the I-Pod alarm and I know now that I my sleep I take it and throw it across my bed, thus it ending up in funny places. Oh the things we do when we sleep :)

I have never awoken in a remotely similar to position to the way I fell asleep. Most things that I go to bed with (sleep mask, iPod, sheet, blanket, other blanket, two pillows) are on the ground when I wake up. Sometimes things I didn't start out in bed with are in bed with me when I wake up. And I always dream the strangest shit, then when I wake up it's super fucking vague except that it was weird.

WHAT IS SLEEP?

Sleep is relative to the human mind, so only the most vivid of dreams are usually remembered, and even then it's unlikely that you'll remember your dreams. I am in the same, and the sheets are all over the place too. I've always wanted to record myself sleeping, just to see how the fuck things got there :eyes:

I wonder if you'd be too conscious of the fact that there was a camera on to do anything weird. Someone would have to plant a hidden camera.

You'd have to do it when you are about to pass out, like when you pull an all nighter then you go to bed later in the day (the latter which was supposed to be my plan, but sleep got the best of me :bouville:)

made a steak dinner tonite. my roommates wouldnt eat any because it was still slightly pink on the inside (as steak SHOULD be, pussies) oh well, their loss, this turned out delicious. so that made me wonder, does anyone else refuse to eat pink or slightly raw meat? i personally think it tastes best that way, otherwise its too dried out.

here's what i made btw.

london broil marinated in pepper, sea salt and worcestershire sauce w/ sauteed onions, green peppers and jalapenos. :)

First of all, I eat my steak rare to medium rare. Fuck them, sounds like they can't even handle medium.

Second, what you made is a little bit too busy for steak for my tastes. It's the focal point, and if it's good meat, it shouldn't need anything except a grill and a little A1.

A1? im on a college budget buddy, lets not get too fancy

beef and worcestershire sauce make an awesome combo, especially for burgers. but i agree about making meat the focal point. i just felt like having some vegetables and thats all we had in the fridge. just eating a steak by itself is a little plain.

That looks and sounds absolutely delicious. I like meat for meat's worth, but nothing wrong with adding some extra flavors.

And with regards to steak, I have found that restaraunts will either give you a steak that is too rare if you ask for it medium or is too well done if you ask for a variety of rare. Rarely (pun) do they get it right. That being said, I prefer no pink, but I won't bitch if there is a little bit....as long as I can chew it reasonably.

Generally I prefer medium-to-medium-well, but a lot of the time if I'm ordering out I'll just order something well done, because I've found the majority of restaurants tend to undercook beef, so if I order it well-done, it comes more or less the way I want it.

I like my chicken and shrimp cooked until they're done because I'm not a big salmonella fan. It's a taste thing, really.

There's a piece in this month's Spin magazine (my step-dad's mom subscribes to it for me? okay...) about the Savannah metal scene, specifically Baroness, Kylesa, and Blacktusk.

And now I will never again listen to Baroness, Kylesa, or Blacktusk. :D

Medium rare is the ONLY way to eat a steak*.

*if at a steakhouse that is known for being particularly raw (there are a few), medium is also acceptable.

That's pretty much how I feel. Except I have a problem with overcooking steakhouses more than undercooking steakhouses, so sometimes I have to order it rare to get it medium rare. But we're totally on the same page here. :fist:
