Well, here's what my panties are in a bunch over today:

I'm the most inept person in the world when it comes to women. I have been the principle, and often only, player in the demise of every potential relationship I've had since junior year of high school, and my present situation is no exception. Also, it's finals week, and I'm stressed as balls. So I'm going to listen to My Dying Bride and be a huge bummer until I get to come home. :bouville:

That word...it does not mean what you think it means.

Actually, in all the sources I have written by lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trannies, you name it, they self-identify as "queer" and use the word to mean any and all of the above. I was downright uncomfortable using the word until I started working on this paper.

And I still kind of wonder if it's an "our word" thing like "nigga" and I'm gonna get curb stomped by some very angry gay guys. :eyes:

Er, no. Queer is not an "all-encompassing" term. In fact, it's kind of the opposite: some people use it when they feel they don't fit into any of those other "categories."

Alright, fucking relax on the social crusade, man. I'm writing a paper about the gay community, I interviewed gay people, I read gay people's books, so clearly I don't have an agenda of hate or ignorance here. Again, I've seen that word used by transgendered individuals to describe themselves. Maybe they just have a sense of humor that the standard capital-letter Transgendered Community doesn't, but I'm not just spewing nonsense. I came into this knowing almost nothing about the LGBTQ community, so this is all information I've gathered extremely recently. If you let your political correctness guard down for two seconds you might even be impressed that I'm doing this research and writing this paper, but I guess since I don't have gay friends I don't have any right to do this.

Brad's right. I took a Historical Perspectives on Homosexual class last quarter, taught my a lesbian professor, and most of the 50 students in that class were LGBT. There isn't a pre-agreed upon dictionary of words that are and aren't acceptable....Some people in that community use LGBTQQAP- Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Asexual, Pansexual.....and I've heard A LOT of people use queer, both in literature and in discussion, to describe the community that they are a part of.

One gay individual may be offended by queer, another may not be. Some use it positively, some fear it being used negatively. It isn't very much different from the N word because NO ONE refers to the African-American Community as "the Nigger community." If Brad can point to reputable literature that uses the word, then he is intellectually justified in using it as well.

Look: I can concede that some people may use "queer" in the context you're referring to, but I wouldn't say it's a majority, and I was simply cautioning you against using that term too loosely. I won't back down on the use of "tranny," though. It doesn't matter that you know trans people who think it's funny. That's going down a very slippery slope towards the territory of "but my black friends call themselves the n-word, why can't I?!"

I think you meant that it IS very much different from the N word. Otherwise I think you're on solid ground. There is a self-defined "queer" community, and generally (though not unanimously) it is acceptable for queer people and allies to use the term "queer" in a non-derogatory fashion to refer to this community.

PS85 is right about "tranny" of course (although if Brad actually used that term, I didn't see it).

This is more than PR disaster or a lawsuit waiting to happen, this makes all of us look bad. I belong to the Honors College. I'm going to be getting money from them to go abroad this coming summer. I don't even fucking know what to say.

How the fuck does a 54 year old do that?

Its a testament to the Jewish people that, despite this antisemitic man's position of power, so many Jews are still able to attend Indiana University.

Yeah, I agree with this. I don't know if it's technically a race, but it's more of a race than are other religions. It may be true that there's no "Jewish gene" per se, but I think Jewish people as a whole are easier to identify than most religions' people.

Also, like you said, the term "Jew" can easily refer merely to a group of people who are born from Jewish parents, rather than strictly a follower of that religion. For example, I'm an atheist in terms of my religious views, but I still refer to myself as a Jew because it implies something about my heritage. I'm not sure a Catholic would do the same if he considered himself an atheist in terms of religious views.

There are physical features that certain people from certain parts of Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East have that connects them to their Jewish ancestors. "The Jewish People" were concentrated in different areas of the world, and developed certain physical traits that can still be seen today. I'll try to find an example that isn't "big nose." Yeah, I read it too. Very interesting, and it very clearly spells out how the descendants of typically Jewish (as in follows of Judaism) nations spread to other nations of the World and the physical traits of their home country (nothing to do with their religion) became incorporated into the physical make-up of the population. That doesn't make the descendants Jewish. Total misnomer.

Take all the nations the British conquered way back in the mists of time. Britain was a Christian nation. The places they conquered, in some cases, ended up with a population which adopted some or all of the physical traits of British people of the time. No one refers to them as a Christian "race", because that would be incorrect. Same principle.

Seriously, though. Before the Diaspora all the Jews were in the same place. Then they remained in communities wherever they went. Now many of them are back in a community in Israel. If that doesn't make them a people, I don't know what does.

And be honest - when you see a Jew, you know it, right? And they might not be religious, but you still know they're a Jew when you see them.

top ten ways i could respond to this post

1. why would i put words in your mouth? all i've done so far is ask about the words that you put down yourself, which you have confirmed that i interpreted correctly.

2. if the tone my question sounded as though i were assuming the worst, then i apologize. no bullshit -- i mean that sincerely. we should always begin by assuming the best of each other, not the worst.

3. on the other hand, the tone of your response is a little silly. like, the big meanie said something about what i said so i'm taking my ball and going home? you've got to be kidding.

4. even puppets are a little bit racist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RovF1zsDoeM&feature=related

5. there's no biological basis for our concepts of race or racism. both of these things are socially constructed. there's no empirical reason to consider jewish a "race" any more than there is an empirical reason to consider "black" a race. genetically we are all fundamentally the same. but many people do harbor racist attitudes toward both jews and blacks, growing out of a history of antagonism and prejudice against those groups (among many others).

6. more info explaining #5: http://www.pbs.org/race/000_About/002_04-background-01-x.htm

7. the answer to your original question, of course, is nothing. nothing is wrong with jews. just as nothing is wrong with black people, or arabs, or Indians, or the French. well, maybe the French.

8. or, the answer is that jews are accused of killing christ, and of having horns, and of being greedy and conniving, and of secretly running the banks and the media and the planet, and every individual jew is held liable for the fucked up actions of the israeli government. i'm sure there's plenty more i've left out.

9. actually, hassidic jews are kinda fucked up, but mostly in the same ways that all ultraconservative religious fundamentalists are fucked up. that's a whole other conversation.

10. whatever, dude.

And for the record, I agree with you -- these conversations ARE really fucking tedious. Just about the only thing I can think of that's even more tedious is logging on to talk music and shit with people and finding a bunch of racist or homophobic nonsense. If people would stop being dicks in the first place, none of this would ever come up.

I like Pantera in their day, even saw them live, but let's be serious here: the night he was killed, he was playing in a half empty club, with a band no one heard of, on the road to obscurity.

Also, he was "Diamond" Darrell, with spandex, just as long as he was dimebag.

Its undeserved hero worship. Did Chuck and Dio ask for cancer? Did Peter ask for heart failure? Anytime someone dies unexpectedly, its a tragedy....but the NASCAR events, 20-guys-on-stage-paying-tribute concerts, and memorabilia cash ins are annoying as hell. Damageplan sucked, Rebel Meets Rebel sucked, and I can't say I like Pantera since initial love of Walk and Cemetery Gates wore off.

I will say I kind of shook my head in disgust when I was at FYE a while ago and they were hocking Vinnie's new book about Dime in the metal section. Can't really comment on the music because I've never listened to them, but I'd much rather see a tribute for Peter or Dio right now.

I liked Pantera back when I was in high school and they were one of the few bands keeping metal alive in the public eye but I have slowly stopped listening to them since those days.

I agree with what you're saying, all the tributes are becoming more annoying now than anything. He died tragically but is it anymore tragic than the way Peter, Dio or Chuck died? I certainley don't think so. Dime's death was a senseless and shocking murder but I consider the death's of Dio, Chuck and Peter much more sad and tragic.

Peter had battled addiction for a lot of years and it eventually took it's toll and stopped his heat. Dio and Schuldiner batteled cancer to the very end and never gave up the fight. If you've seen someone lose their battle to cancer like I did when I lost my mom to it 12 years ago you know that there is no sadder way to die than to succumb to a disease like that.

I hope that Dio gets the amount of tributes to him as Dime has gotten. He deserves it more than anyone in the metal world.

DethMaiden

I hope every tribute for every dead musician stops about a week or two after their death. It's the equivalent of a comedian saying "So I just had a baby." Easiest way to get the audience on your side ever. Cheap, and insulting to the memory.

In the terms of Dimebag, context behind the death was everything. It was murder, brutal and bloody, live in front of hundreds of fans. While on stage, doing what he loved. Shocking, abrupt, and unexpected. Musical influences aside, Dio and Chuck died because of their own bodies, becoming a victim to a tragic disease, but in relative isolation from the public scene, most likely in hospitals.

The motivations and context of Dime's death makes him a martyr, not a victim, and therefore people react more strongly for it.

Although I wish it was for my own band I gotta admit I'm flattered by the following:

I found out about an hour ago that my buddy who's the lead singer/guitarist of the band I filled on recording earlier in November *check out my non metal drumming thread in the musicians area* is moving to LA to work at the Whiskey A Go-Go doing lights and sound starting in January.

I also learned his next door apartment neighbor will be Jason Mewes *Jay of Jay And Silent Bob Fame*. He actually talked to him for a while tonight and checked out his band, Flipmind on Facebook and he digs what he heard.

Apparently Jason Mewes is into Dungeons and Dragons as well. I think I gotta make a trip out to LA later in 2011 to see if I can play some D&D. Haha.

On the note of Dimebag, his music has influenced me more than Chuck or Dio, HIS music directly, as in Pantera, Damageplan and Rebel Meets Rebel. He is my musical idol and his death is something that I commemerate every year by listening to his music and going out and having a good time with my friends. I think that, with Dimes death, it has a certain resonance to it because he died with no reason, Dio and Chuck battled cancer, and Peter Steele battled drug addiction, there was an enemy for people to say 'wow that was tough for them, they fought as hard as they could', but with Dimebag, he was shot down in cold blood. he didn't even have a chance to fight back or get out of it, he was just killed instantly. I honor Chucks death every year, and this year coming I will be honoring Dio's death too, and Peter Steeles. They are all im portant for people to remember, all of them, I just choose to commemorate Dimes a lil more because he's my favorite of the four. And it sickens me that some people on this board would actually speak down about his death simply because they worship one of the others a little bit more. /rant
