Summer 2009 - 310 lbs. I thought that this was my "most metal" period, with the long hair, mean face, cool band shirts (XXL), and bad attitude.

This is from a few weeks ago, and I've lost a little weight/gained some muscle since then. I'm now 240 lbs, short hair, nicer face, and I still wear some band shirts (XL).

So here's a devil's-advocate-type question for the people firmly opposed to calling things "gay."

"Gay" means homosexual, but we use it to mean "lame" - but "lame" means unable to walk, so we should use "dumb," which means unable to speak, so maybe we use "stupid," which still means "of lesser intellect," but at this point doesn't even mean the thing we originally meant to say. Doesn't every word that means that thing we mean to say have its roots in some kind of perjorative?

I am familiar with Hitchens, or at least I own a few of his books.

He's more internationally focused, and less economically. And he also tends to tackle abstract issues (the classical ideals), and is more idealistically minded in general than most columnists. I consider him one of the most intellectual minds of our time. Too bad he's currently battling metastatic esophageal cancer... we've probably seen what we're going to see of him.

Anyways, I read this on Blabbermouth:
"Other than that I love the concept and I love that there's never any modern metal bands on [Vh1's That Metal Show]. No disrespect to new bands but since the nineties it's been almost two separate forms of music almost. Can't really listen to Deep Purple and Lamb of God as if they were the same thing can you?"

I don't know why, but this quote made me step back and think.

i think the term "gay" when used as slang is somewhat based in truths, even if theyre stereotypes. for example:

"dude im gonna eat your roommates chips ahoy"
"dont, hell be gay about it"

basically used like this means the person is going to act like an overly-dramatic bitch, which is what lame homosexuals act like. is it fair to the cool homosexuals that this term has become associated with being a bitch when it was once used to mean happy? not really, but thats just how it is.

TLDR: drama queens, nobody likes them, especially when they're dudes.

I want to do a statistical analysis of Blabbermouth reviews. My hypothesis is that the official blabbermouth reviews for albums from bands on Roadrunner Records are biased; they rank those bands higher than the user reviews of the same album or the official reviews of non-Roadrunner bands.

EDIT - I would start by surveying users here on what other websites they trust for metal reviews, such as M-A, metalsucks, whatever. I might actually do this. Anyone want to help me?

If I'm particularly curious about reading a review for an album (I usually read reviews for albums I already have- I want to see what other people thought of it), I just google it. MetalSucks has decent reviews. Invisibleoranges is very good though. I'm not sure if they regularly post reviews?

We are extremely honored to announce that our new album will be released on Profound Lore Records in early 2011! hah, i was pissed over christie too, but not over that (altho the trains here are pretty direct, theyre slow compared to other countries, and the rate hikes make me not want to use them).

i was reading in the paper about the medical marijuana plans, which christie is opposed to. instead of being a good sport over an issue he disagrees with and just letting it go through, he decides to do all in his power to stop it. so that means there will only be something like 4 dispensaries in the entire state, and restricting them to only being allowed to sell buds with a THC content of 10% (which is shit). basically its making all the effort put in to this project useless because anyone who actually needs it for pain relief will have to be geographically limited to one of four locations, and wont even be able to get a decent high once they buy it. so people are just going to buy it off the streets anyway because he decided to undermine the whole damn thing in order to stick to his political image. i mean there's pros to having a republican in office when it comes to lower taxes and such... but its immature shit like this, with no logical reasoning behind it, that just makes me feel like these guys arent even taking their jobs seriously and are just playing it based off their own personal opinions.

seeing as we have extremely potent opiates like oxycontin being legally manufactured and acceptable to have, its annoying that politicians feel the need to keep reinforcing these archaic laws with no logical foundation. :finger2:

He calls Tormentor "the low point of [Show No Mercy]," Die By The Sword "detestable" and Crionics "unremarkable." Well, in truth he says "the first part is unremarkable second half of the song is well above average," but still, the compliment is backhanded and isn't awestruck enough. Well allow me to reflect similar journalistic opinion, the first five minutes of Reign In Blood are "well above average", but the rest of it is "boring, piecemeal unremarkable speed metal until the last ten minutes, which was easily outgunned by Slayer's German counterparts."

like i suspected a few weeks ago i think i am growing out of some metal bands. in the past year more and more non-metal bands have been appearing on my iTunes and i've also been deleting some artists that i never listen to anymore. BUT if i really think about it i don't think they were ever bands i loved. i think most of the bands i've been deleting have been bands that i never exactly got "really into" but i listened to them because i really liked other bands within that genre, or because back then when i was getting more into diff types of metal, i thought they were a band respected and liked by many metalheads so i'd try to get into them to gain metal credibility from other metalheads (fucking stupid i know, but i was 15 at the time).

for example i used to listen to Amon Amarth sometimes because i was seeing them live with Ensiferum (who i primarily came to see) so i started listening to before the show and liked them. i thought they were amazing live so i downloaded more of their stuff and listened to them for a while after seeing them. then i came back to them realizing i hadn't listened to them in a year or longer. so i put on a few of their songs, and i honestly could say besides a few songs i still like, i got bored and wanted to change it. but they were still a lot of fun live. if they were on a lineup that i wanted to see i'd gladly go see them again, i just wouldn't listen to them on my own time.

another example would be the power metal genre. my favorite bands from that genre have and always will be Blind Guardian, Stratovarius, and Sonata Arctica (first 2 albums primarily). i also had Gamma Ray, Hammerfall, Angra, Firewind, Kamelot, among a few others in my library. a month or so ago i listened to the few bands mentioned above again for the first time in awhile, and besides a few songs by each band, none of them really did anything for me. i deleted all their stuff off my iTunes, but kept my 3 favorites because i still listen to them on occassion.

so in conclusion after typing this, i kinda realized maybe the bands i deleted off my library were bands i never exactly got into. maybe i just had them in my library and listened to them every now and them because i either 1) loved other bands within that genre, so listened to these bands also thinking i would like them also, 2) i thought they were respected metal bands so i thought if i liked them i'd gain metal credibility (again, fucking stupid i know), or 3) i started listening to a band because they were on a lineup that i was planning on seeing, so i thought i'd get into them since i was seeing that lineup. and i probably did kinda end up getting into them and enjoyed them live, but after that i didn't have much desire to listen to them afterwards, and ended up deleting them later on (which has happened with a few bands before).

so for anyone who took the time to read that, what do you think? is it probably just one of the 3 reasons mentioned above? have these experiences ever happened to you? personally i think it's a combination of all 3 reasons.

Funny - I felt the same way at first. Then Amon Amarth dropped "Twilight of the Thundergod" on the world, and I crossed over into "official fan" territory. :D

That's the one album I would suggest to someone who wants to give them a try from track one through to the end.

I am a pretty big Amon Amarth fan. At first the vocals were a little too guttral for me, then they grew on me and I have really liked them ever since. The essential Amon Amarth record in my eyes will always be With Oden On Our Side, fucking brillant record.

Yeah, Paul Kuhr or something like that. I'd say him, Johann, and Mikael Åkerfeldt are just as easy to understand as if they were cleanly singing.

But maybe I'm crazy, because I can understand most extreme vocalists anymore.

Im still very into metal but I can not listen to brutal death metal anymore. I still listen to melodeath often but every time I try to listen to something like cannibal corpse or deicide lately I get very bored. I was thinking maybe i'll see CC again but I quickly realized I have no interest in seeing that show. But similar to xstructuraldefect I was never that into any of those bands anyway.

Funny - I felt the same way at first. Then Amon Amarth dropped "Twilight of the Thundergod" on the world, and I crossed over into "official fan" territory. :D

got back from the four year strong and comeback kid show tonight and gotta say probably one of the funnest shows i've been to awhile. FYS was too much fun. lots of singing along, crowd surfers, shoving around/jumping, pits (primarily hxc dancing during the breakdowns only but eh w.e), pile ups, sweaty messes, etc.

CBK was very good but pretty much just hardcore kids and a grip of hardcore dancing, but still a lot of fun. not the scene type of hardcore kids, the actual hardcore kids. the ones who listen to bane, trapped under ice, terror, etc, not bring me the horizon, devil wears prada, attack attack, etc.

i'd post a review but i doubt anyone cares about those bands.

Yeah it's pretty likely. Especially if you entered with friends as well. What happens is they call you like a day or two before if you win, and you get sent an e-mail saying so. You print the e-mail and bring it with you to the NBC studios and they give you your wristband(s) there. All the details will be on the e-mail if you win.

Oh and you have to be at least 17, which I'm assuming you are.

Undertaking the task of organising my CDs as they've spent the last six months or so in a completely random order in crates. I don't have room for all of them, so it's going to have to be the go-to 1,500 or so in racks, and the rest in crates... Currently it is not a pretty sight. They are stacked on the floor, one stack per letter except for S (3 stacks), T (2) and M (2).

That's not including EPs, singles, live albums or "collection" albums (i.e. ones I absolutely don't need because the songs are all elsewhere or it's a compilation/soundtrack I only wanted a couple of songs from but they're all "part of the collection").

Walk around with a sharp knife and be Dead.

Me and a friend were originally looking to see if we knew anyone who wanted a band for a party, and we were going to go as Dead & Euronymous, get these kids we know that play bass and drums, and do the Live in Leipzig set.

Unsurprisingly, there is a fairly low interest in a Mayhem cover band for parties...

If you don't have a detail stick (idk what the actual name is) don't attempt anything to complicated, if you aren't really good winging it with fingers usually ends badly.

damn thanks for the tips dude. That first one is great.
So I'm taking it that applying corpsepaint is pretty hard? I'm not really that coordinated  so maybe I should stick with a simple design.

I have been looking around though. From what I could find, I like Kvitrafn, Frost, and King Ov hell. Nattefrost and Gaahl aren't bad either.

Yeah, it's tricky. Just stand by a mirror and have a wet rag on hand in case you majorly ruin it.I lucked out and had a block scheduled art class that day so I just did it there where they had little tools on hand, but it's from a few years ago. If you want to do crosses and thin lines you definitely need the stick, I think a lot of makeup kits come with it though, its like a crayon type thing, and you can cut it with an xacto knife to get it more fine if needed.

Think I finally may have picked my first tattoo. There are less than 5 bands I'd EVER entertain the thought of getting something pertaining to permanently put on my skin, and I am generally against band logos. It just seems kinda uncreative and obvious.

But I recently realized the Evergrey "Evergrey Clan Logo" is pretty much perfect, and Evergrey are without a doubt one of my favorite bands (have been for about 6 years now), and one of the very very few whom I feel personally connected enough with their music in order to do this.

My current avatar is generally the concept, but here's a better version:
(obviously without the signatures marker-ed over it, and I'd get the white text in black ink)

Not sure. On one hand, it seems logical to not get it, but I really like the circular nature of the design, and without that text, that goes away. Kinda 50/50 on that.

Personally, I'd have said having the words [Insert anything here] Clan on a tattoo in any arrangement is lame.

Why not design a circle of some kind yourself to go around the logo.

True facts: My roommate has a tattoo inspired by the Aryan Brotherhood. When we were in the dorms, late at night we were watching a documentary on the AB in prison and they described their tattoos as having a 3 leaf clover and some sort of band, and my roomie designed his tattoo along those guidelines. He pretty much took an AB tattoo and removed the 666 and swastika's.

Meh this quarter of school has been the worst quarter I've ever had. I'm still unsure of what my AP History grade will be, but I just got bitten by a C+ in English H..I've never gotten below a B in English before, although it is my weakest subject. I guess I'll have to work extra hard next quarter so that I can pull up my semester grade.

Well as I previously mentioned, Devin Townsend's solo work is also pretty sweet. His latest album (under the Devin Townsend Project moniker), Addicted, is absolutely incredible if you ask me. It's like epic, pop, prog metal. For SYL a good place to start would probably be The New Black, their last album before splitting up.

i've listened to a few Strapping Young Lad songs already and i'm reaally digging this stuff. of course i've heard of the band many times but never really looked into them. thanks for the recommendation. sounds like a fresh band that i haven't heard before.

Check out Alien and City too. Alien is a complete mammoth of a masterpiece, and City will just kick you in the nuts throughout its duration.

Most times fresh was used in a single page not discussing Will Smith ^

I am about to go out and pick up my daily medication at the local Medical Marijuana Clinics to re-up on my medical marijuana that I medically use for medical medicinal reasons for my medical needs for medication that I medicly use to Medicate on a daily basis. I figured since this is the "What are you doing thread" and theres a billion pages worth of useless posts from people and what they are currently doing. I felt like i should jump on the bandwagon as well and post what I am currently doing....anyways....GOOD DAY TO YOU ALL..

*I think this is the part where someone flames me and says I remind them of someone named hecho or that I am the new indestructible or some shit like that....anyways I'm getting use to it.....feeling right at home:cool:

It's November 11th, and I can't sleep because, despite my fan being on full blast and my window being open, it's about a million fucking degrees in here. Either that or I'm running a fever.

A handful of fairly unique-sounding bands, and their best albums:

Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Butcher's Ballroom (They call themselves "riot opera")
Freak Kitchen - Freak Kitchen (Described by the band as "A corny little heavy-pop-rock-latin-world-jazz-avant-garde-metal-blues-record straight from hell!")
Leprous - Tall Poppy Syndrome (A combination of prog rock, jazz, metal, and other shit. This album is godly)
Pain - Cynic Paradise (Electronic/Techno Metal)

trying to figure out which albums to be signed in case I run into Enslaved tomorrow night.

I'm thinking Axioma Ethica Odini, Vertebrae, Isa, Hordanes Land, and Frost or Below the Lights

I'm more than glad to thank our troops for their service today, but I still think the Post Office should deliver our mail and the dining halls on campus should stay open. This is ridiculous. No class though, so I guess you take the good with the bad.

None of these things are true in Indiana. We hate America.
