I was more referring to the hair cut, political attire, attempts to be accepted by mainstream society, connecting with people more over beer than metal etc. etc. than literally being in the closet about liking metal.
Jesus did plenty of shit to me, assuming he's real he's the reason goddamn Christianity exists! Christianity (Judaism, Islam) makes our country (and world) operate with a fucked up system of morality and turns people shitty. Also, maybe it's just where I live, but probably 80% of the people who have been mean to me have been Christian, so since I'm never going to run into all the Christians in the world I'm going to say proportionally there are more bad ones than atheists in my experience.

I want to save this on my computer so when you cut your hair and wear a suit so you can have a decent job you can realize it's childish.

Metal is music. It's not a way of life. And I fucking love metal. I spend most of my money on metal-related things, and I spend most of my leisure time listening to metal in some capacity. But saying the image of metal is important is basically saying it's cool that mall goth kids like to wear trip pants because their image is important to them, or that you should run out and buy whatever perfume Beyonce wears if you're into pop music because image is important to you, etc.

If you're saying "Fuck you!" in unison with hundreds of other people, you're not really saying "fuck you" at all.

I feel somewhat compelled to mention that I was born Jewish and was raised...not Orthodox, but my parents still made me go to fucking synagouge every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. And I got barmitzfahed.

After that, I more or less swore of Judaism forever. and looking back, my religion seemed way more of a curse than it did a blessiong. All Jewish school did was cause me to miss many saturday morning cartoons and Part II's of Power Ranger episodes.:mad::mad::mad: With all that being said, whenever I hear someone say "fuck the Jews" or something anti-semetic, it does still kind of sting a little. I'm not saying "be sensitive" to the Jews or anything, just sayin...

As usual, I don't think either of you (Brad or Wizzbang 11) are really "right". The correct answer is somewhere between the two.

Also, I hate the notion that "You must cut your hair in order to get a decent job and be accepted in mainstream society". No you don't. End of story.

This has always confused me as well.

There is nothing wrong with people who don't dress metal and listen to the music, but if you are talking about the 'movement' of metal then I would consider that to mean all the people keeping metal alive, living the lifestyle (I would certainly say metal is a lifestyle) and that does involve the image. I don't plan on cutting my hair any time soon, but it's not like I'm going to have long hair forever, I realize this. I am not however going to go out of my way to de-metalize myself to fit in with the norm, which as far as I can tell (and admittedly I really don't know, I am basing this off the internet) is what Cameron has done.

I am exclusively referring to practicing Jews and the religion of Judaism, I have nothing against anyone raised Jewish, born with Jewish heritage or anything like that.

My point was that I know lots of people who have long hair and wear band t-shirts normally that have more than good jobs. As long as you can clean up your image for work, most employers really don't give a shit what you're like the rest of the time. I don't really know where the notion that respectable = short hair really came from in the first place. If just about every depiction ever is to be believed, Jesus had long hair. To me it's not even about metal, because my love of metal isn't why I have long hair and don't plan on cutting it. I just like it.

Connecting with people more over beer is just a social thing, what if his friends aren't exclusively metal-listeners?

I don't understand what you're getting at here.

Jesus did plenty of shit to me, assuming he's real he's the reason goddamn Christianity exists! Christianity (Judaism, Islam) makes our country (and world) operate with a fucked up system of morality and turns people shitty.

I try every day to understand religion as an entity, and it baffles me. As an atheist however, I can never agree with this. I do not blame religion, organized or not, for anything. Christianity is not a reason the world is in trouble, or lives by a "fucked up system of morality." It doesn't "turn people shitty" either. People are so quick to blame aspects of people's lifestyle to say what's wrong with them. In other words, it's people that are shitty, not the religion.

Also, maybe it's just where I live, but probably 80% of the people who have been mean to me have been Christian, so since I'm never going to run into all the Christians in the world I'm going to say proportionally there are more bad ones than atheists in my experience.

This seems to be the root of the issue. You have a negative image of religious people. For every bible-pushing Catholic that I've met, I've met the stupid atheist who doesn't believe for the sake of not believing. They're just like us, but they believe that things happened differently in the past. They're not out to shoot your dog or eat your goldfish.

Yeah, I understand not believing in religion - I don't - but I definitely don't understand giving a shit what other people choose to believe. Most people you're going to encounter are going to be religious, just statistically. If you decide to pass on their friendship just because of that fact, you're a goddamn moron.

My sole act of de-metalization was cutting my hair. Brad, Brady, Mike, James, Mank, Natty, Eric, Addi, and ALOT of people on this board have short hair, and they're some of "most metal" people I know.

I completely disagree. Religion is the basis of our morality, I don't mean "killing is bad", I mean stupid religious laws. It does turn people shitty. People are turned much more closed minded, fearful and easily lead by it.

You just sound like an angry contrarian. Our common humanity unites us far more than any petty differences can divide us. Hating people because they are different or because they are loosely affiliated with another group that does bad things (IE: hating Christians because of how bad Christianity is) is an awful way to view the world.

Back on topic:

I'm the new Troy-area coordinator for the Coussoule campaign here in Ohio's 8th Congressional District. The past few days I've been brainstorming ideas for energizing volunteers, getting the candidate's name out to the public, and generally organizing our grassroots efforts in the area. We're running against House Minority Leader John Boehner, so its going to be a tough battle, but I think this campaign is going to tell the Republican Party that no district is "safe", at least not our own.

I personally don't believe, for the health of our Republic, that any party should be so powerful in an area that they can win no matter who they put on the ticket. Its a sad reality, however, but I plan to do what I can to send some worried drops of swea down that tan face.

  i always get a kick out of what Wizzbang has to say.

anyways i just got back from the As I Lay Dying show. my friend decided to go last minute so she picked me up and we went and got there right when Underoath had ended. i didn't care about missing Underoath (although i wanted to see BTBAM but oh well) but my friend sure did. the chick at the box office said that As I Lay Dying was only going to play for about 50min and didn't think it was worth $36 at the door, so she both gave us tickets for free. pretty awesome so with leftover money i bought an AILD shirt for $20.

overall the show was pretty fun and it was pretty packed knowing they played at the Palladium which holds about 4,000. i don't know if they did this at any other show, but the singer said because it was the guitarist's (i think or bassist's) birthday, he asked for a wall of death during the last song Confined. pretty satisfied knowing i got into the show for free. would've liked to see BTBAM but there's always next time. maybe i'll write a review of the show later.

I'm niticing it too, even though I dont generally get leaked versions of albums. I think bands are being more careful, alot of them are saying you can download it anyway, and bands are pre-releasing more material these days anyway.

I went to the University of Toledo for Chemical Engineering, a program in which many of the core courses required classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, often at 8:00AM. So, where most of my friends managed to have Fridays off - or at least no classes until later in the day - I had to be up and at it early every Friday morning. That's only forty minutes later than this class, which sounds a hell of a lot more interesting to me than General Chemistry or Organic Chemistry or Transport Phenomena or Thermodynamics. You'll get no sympathy from me, son. :finger:

EDIT: Oh, wait. Is this a physics course? If so, you deserve one smidgen of sympathy. That's a real unit of measurement, BTW. I think it's metric.

So, I don't know much about Twitter, and you know I'm cynical about the whole concept in general, but how rare/special is it for someone "famous" or big to respond to you? I think Manks said Ben Folds tweeted him or something...but, you know, you have thousands of people following you and you're following other people....how impressive is it that this guy talked to you?

I mean, on facebook or email, I would imagine famous or rich or accomplished people wouldn't give you the time of day...but on Twitter it seems like they actually talk back.

I have had a few famous people respond to me like Kevin Smith, Nathan Fillion, Dana White, Doug Benson, and Adam Richman from MVF.

Anyways, I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think Comcast banned encyclopedia dramatica from their servers or something.

For the past couple of days whenever I try to access it says "the server is not responding." Yet not only was it working on work computers at the IDS, but when I was at the radio station, which also uses the IU Secure network, it was working just fine on my very fucking laptop.

So Comcast has apparently blacklisted ED, but have been all hush hush about it. That's funny and shitty at the same time.

Personally, I dont much like Barker or Lars in terms of drumming, I think guys like Lombardo and Adler destroy 'em both. However, they both fit their purpose well, Lars has only really been going downhill the last decade, Barker is still on top form from what I've heard.

In terms of metal drumming, Lombardo, Adler and Vinnie Paul are as good as it gets for me, Portnoy too but he's in a separate league consdering what he's capable of and his claim to fame being a progressive band.

ok so i was trying to look for mars last night, sense in this next week its supposed to be closer than it ever will in the next 6000 years. i couldnt find it but it had me thinking. the universe is made up of inanimate elemental matter, that through different combinations can manifest itself into other material with completely different properties, eventually leading to organic compounds and then to life. now as different species evolve they gain higher levels of consciousness, the highest currently being us. so it got me wondering, what if all this is just a long birthing process for the universe to manifest itself as some sort of ultimate consciousness. what if we dont really exist as individuals, but as stepping stones for a higher being?
