It's in my top 10 comic series of all time, maybe even top 5. Yes, it's excellent, as is everything Brian K. Vaughan has done (except Runaways, blech).

I saw them live for a free MySpace show a couple of months ago, because they are from Cleveland, as am I. I think it was a warm-up for their tour for the new album. The set was actually very, very good. :rocker: Their energy is on eleven the whole time. The cool thing about the gig I saw was that they did a bunch of audience requests at the end...that was cool as hell. I guess they didn't hear me yelling "Dead Inside" from the back of the pit, though - oh well. ;)

They have tons of stuff, both used and new, CD's, DVD's, vinyl and even a ton of shirts, and it's all metal and punk - the whole freaking store (ground floor and basement, and both are huge). I hit a few other places around Manhattan as well, such as Bleecker Bob's (guess where that is), but I seem to remember they didn't have all that much metal on the shelves - lots of good electronica, though.

Anyway, I still have to make a separate post to list what I bought during that trip. I've been out of the country (Saskatchewan) for about a week, so I haven't got around to posting that list yet...

Well not to minimize Quo Vadis, because I do like them (thanks in part to multiple mentions by you), but Detroit is a long way to drive for me to see them. That Elude Fearra band that is opening for them seems somewhat interesting, but worth the drive...? I dunno. Maybe they'll come to Ohio within a day or two of the Detroit show - that's a pretty common thing.

Classic. Hands down their best. That CD is selling like hotcakes for ten bucks all around the country now - they must have had another pressing of that disc and the market is full of them, or something...anyway, hope you didn't pay more than that. Well hell, even if you did, it's still worth it. ;):rocker:

Yep! The low price is precisely what convinced me to buy it. I was surprised to see it on sale for just $9, I couldn't resist getting a copy.

Haven't had my first full listen yet but I'm kinda with mankvill on the issue. It's Skeletonwitch; it's worth buying. It's only their second (third, whatever) full-length and the two songs I've heard had great riffs so they're not out of steam yet by a long shot.

Disappointing album for me.

I already own half of the tracks thanks to greatest hits albums, plus I own a DVD of the making of the album, so I figured I might as well hear the "filler" on this album. So far it's all pretty good, with certainly nothing as a atrocious as "Walk Away."

Regardless, Behind Blue Eyes and Won't Get Fooled Again = best two-song closing sequence in the history of music.

Wacken is the over-hyped kids festival. It's somehow managed to be the only one all the kids who get their metal knowledge from Kerrang! and Metal Hammer know about.

It's like the iPod of metal festivals. The one for Blabbermouth readers.

It managed a good line-up last year, I'll give it that. But most years the line-up blows. All the money spent at the top end, no quality throughout the bill.

It's also too big. 40,000 is the biggest a festival should be to be enjoyable. Wacken's 75-80,000 capacity is stupid. The views just blow with that many people. And the festival area has to be so big to accommodate that many people that the sound also blows.

I also find the running order to be very amateurish. They make no attempt to clash bands of different kinds. It's entirely likely that, were they booked, Testament and Anthrax would clash, for example. You also find that great bands with a lot of support and history will get shit little sets. Bands like UFO, Rage, Gamma Ray, Testament and Cathedral got 30 minutes each last year, for example.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong </DennisMiller>

I really want to hit Roadburn sometime too.

Especially as they've just added Kylesa, The Wounded Kings and The Gates of Slumber to next year's.

No, they don't. And 3/4 of the bands play for about 30 minutes. The line-ups look a lot less attractive when most of the bands you want to see are barely more than support.

It's the festival all the followers go to. The fans who know no better.

Download seems like a shitty fest but Wacken seems to get a lot of good rarities (like Avantasia, the final Running Wild show, Immortal, etc), plus it's fuckin Wacken! Maybe it's different over there where you have so many big fests in such close proximity, but here in North America Wacken is like a metal pilgrimage that a lot talk about doing but few actually do.

I'd love to go to Wacken, Bloodstock, Hellfest, and Gods of Metal someday.

I know a lot of people would never even consider it because of the lack of interest in Prog and Power Metal, but in my opinion ProgPower USA really is the ideal set up. I like the fact that they don't approach booking with a "Quantity = Quality" approach, with only 5-7 bands on each night, so that the bands can all play decent length sets, and it is actually really enjoyable and not exhausting from an audience perspective. Also I think ProgPower tends to have very solid line-ups. Even though the festival as a whole may book under 15 acts, most years I have a legitimate interest in 10 of them, and wouldn't mind seeing most of the rest. To me that's much better than a huge European festival where I'd still probably only get the same number of bands I truly wanted to see, and a few more I'd have an interest in, but then also get about 60 bands of absolutely no interest to me. I also like that in more recent years the organizers have tried to make the first night of the fest special by holding it in a more intimate setting, having acoustic sets, special collaborations and performances... it just seems like the absolutely ultimate experience for someone into that style of music. Furthermore, I love the fact that they do it in a theater-type setting. I live for the intimate experience of seeing bands close up, in a smaller setting, crowds of under 2,000 people. ProgPower does a great job of harnessing that intimacy but also having the space and professionalism of a larger venue.

IrritatedTrout
11-03-2009, 10:23 PM
Yeah, ProgPower does seem like a cool fest. I'd like to see that one year too (this years lineup doesn't interest me all too much though). I'm very thankful that I live so close to MDF as, IMO, it's the best fest in the world for extreme metal.

I know, I wasn trying to insult underground bands, its just I hate when people winge that festivals are too mainstream or whatever, just annoys me is all.

That bein said, I hafta agree that fests that cater for a specific style of music are a really good idea, theres a few that happen around Ireland and they're always interesting. And I shall be making the European fest sweep next year also :D

I've only heard Wacken is awesome from kids who know no better, or adults with the same attitude and perception of metal. Download mostly the same.

The Wacken line-up last year was the first good one I've seen in its history. Seriously. It's only recently they've stopped spending all the money on four bands.

And yes, it is absolutely the Download of Europe. Identical clientele and reputation. As someone else said, it's famed in the States for being some kind of pilgrimage. And that's exactly what I mean. It's somehow become the one everyone knows of, despite by no means being the best (very, very far from it). The iPod of festivals.

Whoever mentioned Gods of Metal just now, it's not bad, but the organisation is pretty poor. And it depends on the venue. Last year it was at Stadio Brianteo in Monza which is awkward from several points of view. It's better at the Idroscalo in Milan or the Parc Du Nord in Bologna. So if you manage to get over this was one year, check what's up with that one first. It changes every year. One year it was even split over two different weekends. That was just retarded.

Well Iv heard its awesome from people who go to virtually every european metal fest during the Summer. Its purely a matter of the bands you want to see, and this year and last year the line up was, I thought, killer.. And iv heard its really well organized too. You cant compare it to Download, Download is a joke these days, its huge, and has bloody pop bands playing these days. Next year's ProgPower is a huge issue for me. They managed to get the one band I want to see more than any other in the world (Nocturnal Rites), and my latest obession (Seventh Wonder). However, aside from that, it's mostly bands I don't care about. I like Stormwarrior, Illusion Suite, and the little bit of DGM I'm familiar with, and I do like Kamelot and Hammerfall, but I've seen both of them already, and neither was a great show. The rest of the line-up I really don't care for. So thus it's very difficult for me to spend the money. Ideally I hope that Thursday's show gets a few bands I really want to see, and they eventually decide to sell one-day tickets for Friday/Saturday. That way I can come for Thursday and Friday (see Nocturnal Rites, Seventh Wonder, Kamelot, Stormwarrior, and Illusion Suite), and then go home, content.
