There's a little more scrutiny getting a work visa, esp if someone has a criminal record, even for relatively inconsequential offenses

Ha. Don't complain about that price to anyone with a science, engineering, or medicine-related major.

Also, I found that you'll spend the most in your first year or two. The closer you get to graduation, the less books you'll need to buy (at least that's how it was for me).

Can you recommend/lend/give me some more comics/graphic novels plz?

I'll make a top 10 thread at some point for all the newbz.

EDIT: No, I won't. I'll just throw out a list of my favorites right here.

Basically, there's three writers in comics who deserve ridiculous amounts of praise and who have written the bulk of my favorite stuff: Alan Moore, Brian K. Vaughan, and Mark Millar. Mike Mignola, Frank Miller, and Warren Ellis come sorta close. Stan Lee and Bob Kane's shit is completely classic but will pretty much feel dated and retreaded if you're at all familiar with their now-famous characters. Artist-wise, I don't have too many favorites (Bryan Hitch, Dave Gibbons and Adi Granov are the only ones that immediately come to mind) and basically I just look for artwork that a) appeals to me (i.e. no manga) and b) fits the story. So here's a rough top fifteen for me with brief blurbs. No issues are listed so assume I mean the whole series/story arc. Most all of these are broken into issues though so you could see if you like it by reading just one:

1. Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons (Shouldn't even be a question at this point. Anyone interested in comics needs to read it.)
2. Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris (Less critical acclaim than Y, but deserves as much if not more. Politics meets superheroes and sci-fi. Very good.)
3. Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar and Dave Johnson (The absolute best Elseworlds story. Superman in Soviet Russia. The concept alone gets a high grade.)
4. Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland (The best Joker story ever written. And Joker might be the best character ever written.)
5. Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra (Thickly layered; the most complex series in comics history. Look for the letter Y hidden everywhere in the art.)
6. Marvel Civil War by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven (Works on two levels: political allegory and badass pictures of superheroes fighting each other.)
7. Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons (Moore's tribute to the old school. Throwback that doesn't feel dated.)
8. The Ultimates by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch (Only decent story to come out of the Ultimate Universe, but a brilliant series, and key for understanding the Avengers movies.)
9. 100 Bullets by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso (Violent and beautiful. Art takes some getting used to. My gateway back into comics over a year ago.)
10. Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan and Nico Henrichon (Vaughan still being political, this time taking to the streets of Iraq. Anthropomorphism abound.)
11. V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd (The art takes a lot of getting used to; it's a hand-drawn noir. But the story is great and it's fun to compare to the movie, which I actually find superior.)
12. Hellboy: Seed of Destruction by Mike Mignola (This is where it all began for the bad boy of comic characters. A great origin story to compare with Marvel and DC's best.)
13. Iron Man Extremis by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov (Iron Man getting involved in some politics with his coolest all-time suit and some stellar artwork.)
14. Superman for All Seasons by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (Art looks like Norman Rockwell instead of comics. This only helps the bizarrely simple story succeed.)
15. Captain America Reborn by Ed Brubaker and Bryan Hitch (Still only in its first issue, but I have a strong feeling this will be the highlight of Obama optimism in the comics world - compared with the Bush Administration-era Death of Captain America it's optimistic, anyhow.)

4. Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland (The best Joker story ever written. And Joker might be the best character ever written.)

Also a story which that butthole (Alan Moore) hates.

It does end up costing more the way they do some of it, but for all of those it's worth it.

And Josh, I don't think any subsequent Batman writers cared to use The Killing Joke as historically "part" of the series, so it stands alone in what it says and indeed in the very Joker origin story that contributes to it kicking so much ass. Moore disowning it doesn't make sense though. :( It's among his best works.

Well, Moore's disownership isn't gonna change that. But he disowns stuff pretty rapidly, and most of his post-80s output (excluding Tomorrow Stories and America's Best) sucks.

The irony is that, in today's business world, you definitely still need to wear a tie (and preferably a full suit) for a job interview in order to be taken seriously, but if you get hired you will probably never need it again (unless you go into some type of sales work, and even then it's not necessarily a mandatory thing). Good thing for me, because thanks to the sedentary nature of my desk job - which pays very well, so I ain't complainin' :D - my suit no longer fits me anyway, because I've put on about thirty pounds since I bought it. :eyes:

Still, it's good you have the suit and jackets - they will come in handy for weddings and funerals (hopefully you go to much more of the former than the latter). ;)

Depends what you do. We're expected to dress smartly where I work, and we barely ever see any external customers. Normally this just means shirt, trousers and shoes though. Ties aren't necessary and we only really add jackets when we have meetings or whatever.

This is insane. Ticketmaster here charge a flat 4.95 for postage and no more than 5 per ticket for fees.

Shit is just expensive here. My most recent example: 2 x Dream Theater tickets = 77.25 :( (approx. $125.50)

For the fees? That's be up to $8 in fees and $8 in postage.

But the fees go up depending on the price of the ticket. So the $10 Motorhead ticket example about would probably have fees of half that.

They love to cash in on the expensive shows. I would expect to pay 25%-40% in fees. Certainly not the 120% mankvill got stung for.

For college, I'm doing alot of 'leadership' programs, and they require suits (are at least shirt and tie.) For example, I have a 4 day conference coming up in two weeks, and I need to dress up every day. After that though, I plan on pursuing a career in politics and/or law, so I think suits are going to be the norm.

I don't mind it really. I mean, its expensive, but actually dressing up isn't so bad. Makes me feel fancy.

Yeah, same over here. They call it "business casual". It means Dockers, decent shoes and either a golf shirt or some other decent type of shirt with a collar and buttons. I remeber the days of having to wear ties at work - so glad that shit is over. ;)

I got:

Black Sabbath - Reunion

Judas Priest - Ram it Down (don't understand the hate for this one)
Iron Maiden - A Real Live One (original '93 copy)

I got these at FYE and they had marked every single disc (some double discs too) CD in the entire store down to $9.99. They weren't going out of business but I'm not sure if all the FYE stores are doing this. Sweet deals though.

But still...god damn, Ticketmaster.

Motorhead tickets for me too.

Only $10... fucking win

.....

+ $10

....

Not bad for Motorhead though.

Well to be perfectly honest, it costs more than that to see them in London. It's just a higher proportion of the cost is the actual ticket face value, rather than fees.

In recent years a Motorhead ticket for London will cost you 30+ at face value, which is about $48. Fees will add approximately another $8.

When I read about people complaining about Ticketmaster fees it makes me grateful that I don't have to deal with them for anything except for arena/amphitheater shows. The local club-sized venues use different websites for their ticketing, but I don't have much experienced with those sites and their charges.

I'm not sure about Lupo's in Providence (I think so, though), but I know the Palladium in Worcester is partnered with FYE so you can go into an FYE and get your tickets there, for a flat fee of $4.50.

I barely use Ticketmaster either. I use Ticketweb whenever I can (bizarrely Ticketmaster's "sister" site, so has most of the same shows, plus almost all of the awesome small ones, but lower fees). See Tickets after that, then Ticketmaster.

Got paid to help somebody move today so I picked up:

Conception - Flow
Saxon - Forever Free

Is FF any good? Havn't had a chance to listen yet but the record store didn't have any Saxon I knew anything about (they only had Metalhead and Templar or Crusader or something) so I blind bought this album.

Oh, hell yeah - they are really entertaining live. I took my wife to see them for her birthday when they came to Cleveland a few years ago. The whole show is a spectacle and a half - and the percussion stuff is just insane, just like you said. Plus, they make you laugh your ass off. Good quality entertainment for any age / any genre of music fan - I can't wait to take my son when he gets a few years older...he would have a blast, I think. :D
