Kinda strange how I could find the book for under a dollar. But alas it works for me. :D

Shipping ended up being 6.95 for me, and the shirt was priced at 9.99. 17 bucks isn't that bad for a shirt, so I bit on it. It's not really a deal once you factor in the shipping, but oh well. I've paid a lot more for shirts in the past.

I needed a new Slayer shirt since all my others have been ruined.

WHERE IS THIS MAGICAL PLACE OF WHICH YOU SPEAK????

RECKLESS RECORDS: There are 2 of them that I know of. One is right downtown in the loop, at 26 E Madison. Right below the Madison/Wabash brown line stop. That's the one I usually hit up since its right down the street from a lot of my classes.

The main one is off of the Belmont Red Line stop. Walk east on Belmont until you hit Milwaukee Ave., and go south a bit, at 1532 N Milwaukee. Google maps 'em.

My RA actually turned me onto them. The one at Belmont is pretty huge, like 3 times the size of the one at the Loop. They have tons and tons of CD's from every genre out there, and a ton of used/old stuff. And they got tons and tons of Vinyl, if you're into that. Whenever I check, they have an amazing selection of metal vinyl out there. It's really tempted me to start collecting them, but they're just a little too expensive for me right now financially to buy en masse. From all the different record stores I've visited in Chicago, they have the best old/used sections.

The Exchange, right under the Belmont Red Line stop, has a decent CD selection too, but nowhere near Reckless. Record Breakers, above Reggie's Rock Club, is really good, too, but Reckless still has a much better selection and more cheap old CD's. AND way more vinyl. Definitely check them out sometime!

Upgraded to Spotify premium. Figured it was worth it, since I use it on my iPhone all the time. There's spots here and there that Spotify doesn't have, but I'm constantly going back and forth between different and new music, and don't necessarily want to go through the hassle of downloading it all. So far it's worth it.

I don't own too much as far as classic doom goes, just The Ethereal Mirror, The Carnival Bizarre, In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend (If you want to count that), a couple Pentagram albums, and Death Penalty by Witchfinder General. I do have Saint Vitus and Pagan Altar downloaded, though.

As far as Stoner/Sludge goes though, I probably have more of those 'classics' from bands like Kyuss, Sleep, Goatsnake, Church of Misery, COC, Bongzilla, Weedeater, Acid King, Acid Bath and Eyehategod.

I've been working on this part of my record collection for a little while now, and I'm almost satisfied :D.

I may have to rethink my strategy of listening to both the EP and the album in one fell swoop. That's 81 minutes. Way too much to take in. I'm on the second track of VV and I'm patiently waiting for it to end. Not because it's bad, it's just a lot to take in.

My only problem with Vikingligr Veldi is that the songs are a bit on the repetitive side, but HL is flawless imo. Three great songs on that one, and they're (basically) the only old black metal songs Enslaved pulls out live anymore.

But Vikingligr is what really set Enslaved apart from the other second wave bands at the time, imo.

I have a turntable with a small collection of vinyls. I don't think the sound quality is as superior to cd as everyone says it is, it's still better though.

It's really dependent on your turntable (specifically it's cartridge,) receiver and speakers. I've had 3 turntables and so far this is the first one that I'd call decent (within the realm of turntables.) If you really want HQ sound I wouldn't go for any turntable that sets you back less than $500, basically I'd say the Debut III is the best reasonably priced turntable and that will still set you back quite a bit. I'm using all used and old equipment right now and the sound certainly isn't ideal, but its pretty good and listening to records is my favorite form of music listening so I spend most of my time in my room doing so. Regardless of the quality of your turntable and all that, vinyl has a warmer sound and even it's defects (popping etc.) sound better to me that stupid digital files with clipping and all that. I've even bought CDs that sounded like shit, and Ive yet to obtain a record (I've got ~350) that doesn't sound superior to it's digital form.

I want to get stuff on vinyl, because it doesn't sound better (although, for general listening purposes, really not THAT much better that it makes a hell of a difference), but they are far too expensive. When I can buy music in the quantity I buy CDs for the same price on vinyl, then I'll get into them.

In my experience, vinyl tends to be pretty similar in price to CDs, often times even cheaper. Of course, it all depends on a lot of factors: record label, whether or not it's a limited pressing, even the kind of music. Metal vinyl tends to be more expensive, while punk is usually dirt cheap. No idea why that is, but that's what I've noticed.

Thanks a lot man. I already have a kit actually. I just can't get to it at the moment. Our garage is too cluttered. We're in the process of clearing it out now so I should be able to start playing it again soon. So I just bought this pad so I could do something until I can get behind the kit again.

I've had it for a couple years but I haven't played it in a very long time. I never really took it as serious as I should have. I want to look into techniques and stuff this time around instead of just trying to play tabs. Meh, I barely listen to anything at all on the computer. It sounds like shit. I rip CDs for the purposes of a portable mp3 player, sure. But the rest of the time I listen to CDs on a proper stereo.

People accepting mp3s as a legitimate format for anything other than pocket devices is a serious problem. I wish digital music were still 56kbps.

I don't know about you, but at 320kbps you can't really tell the difference between an mp3 and CD. 192 tends to be fine for me, but at 128 I can hear cymbals and higher vocals start to distort.

I keep stuff at 128kbps on my mp3 player for space reasons. And certainly on a regular pair of in-ear 'phones, 192 is absolutely fine.

On a PC, it can be 320kbps all it likes, PC speakers still sound like shit, laptop speakers sound worse.

On my stereo, yes, they sound fine. So taking the pure sound issue and stepping away for a moment from the tragic cheapening of music the mp3 has caused, sure, listening to stuff at 320kbps is pretty much no different to listening to a CD. A CD operates in a digital manner anyway, so the finer the quality of a digital file, the closer it is to a CD.

However, that's only relevant if you have a stereo that can play mp3s, or while you're still living in one room and hooking up your stereo to your PC is a sensible thing to do.

My stereo is in my lounge. My PC is in another room. And I wouldn't even waste time hooking decent speakers up to the on-board sound card of my laptop

So yeah, CDs all the time for me (unless it's an advance release, because 80% of those are digital now - fortunately, my stereo can play mp3s from a USB drive).

Well I played on and off for about a year or two, but then I stopped and eventually our garage started to get cluttered and I couldn't get to my kit.

I'm pretty much a complete beginner. I could only play a few songs when I was playing.

Ah, so I guess I'm not a complete n00b here. :D
I expected most of you drummers here to have been playing for like... 10 years by now

I've been play for like 5. Though school has been really getting in the way of practice recently. Still trying to schedule a band practice. We are on the verge of recording a song :D

Well I listen with headphones which is all that really matters for computers and Ipods. v0 and FLAC rips with two pairs of damn good Sennheisers (one of the more expensive models for comp listening and on of the more portable models for iPod listening..lol I'm too lazy too look what I have.)

I can't think of anything worse in terms of listening to music than listening at home on headphones...

And on the subject of CDs, just snagged:

U.D.O. - Mastercutor
U.D.O. - Rev-Raptor

Speaking of which, there is some good news in all of this...on the subject of the thread:

Just finished making hotel reservations from 30-Sep to 9-Oct in Kona, Hawaii. Plane tickets were purchased earlier this week.

The bad news - I'm missing the following shows because of this:

10/1 - Enslaved / Ghost / Alcest - Outland Live (Columbus, OH)
10/4 - Arch Enemy / DevilDriver / Skeletonwitch / ChthoniC - House of Blues (Chicago, IL)
10/7 - An Evening with PRIMUS - Stage AE (Pittsburgh, PA)
10/8 - Explosions in the Sky / Wye Oak - Royal Oak Music Theatre (Detroit, MI)

Oh, the things I do for love (OK...and SCUBA diving).
