Think of power metal and add some death metal riffs. You'd think it wouldn't work, but these guys make it work. They only have three records, and I feel they balance it very well on their latest especially, "The New Dark Age". I think you would like it, based on your borders of power metal. I reccomend the former first, and for a more traditional power metal sound go for the EP and the first album.

You know, now would be the perfect time to get more into them. I can't lie, the only record I have is "Torn", and I haven't gave it the proper listen, all I've heard is Fear :hecho: (granted that track is awesome). Anything you can reccomend for my current state of mind?

Recreation Day and Inner Circle are the height of their more emotional greatness. In Search of Truth is my favorite record but it's less on that side and more on the epic prog metal masterpiece side of things, haha. I really can't recommend all 3 of them enough. There are promo videos from every album on YouTube. "The Masterplan" from In Search of Truth, "Blinded" and "I'm Sorry" from Recreation Day, and "A Touch of Blessing" from The Inner Circle.

On the one hand, this entire album sounds exactly like Nain's Baptism which is awkward because a) that makes it repetitive as hell, b) Nain's Batpism was the weakest track on Holy Mountain, but on the other hand, the tracks on here show how that song should have been done.

Fucking exactly. I bet if that song was played 5 times a day on the radio the fuckin Dio fanboys would get sick of it pretty goddamn quickly.

Nope. I've said this before, over-saturation really has nothing to do with me liking a song or not. It can take a song I dislike and make it annoy the piss out of me (see: most classic rock radio staples). However it can't make me dislike a song I already like or otherwise would like, at least not at the frequency that I would logically hear it. If you put a song on repeat and hear it 20 times in a row, anyone will get sick of it, but once in a while on the radio is a different story. My problem with most radio staples is that I don't even like the songs in the first place, and then I have to get them shoved down my throat.
My local rock/metal station plays Heaven and Hell. Not as much as other Ozzy-Sabbath songs, but it does. Actually, that's where I heard it for the first time. For the frequency I listen to the radio, a song's actual rotation on the radio really doesn't mean that much to me. I'd be willing to bet I've personally chosen to listen to Heaven and Hell as many or more times than I've heard War Pigs or Paranoid against my will.

This. Seriously, just because a song is played on the radio a lot of times doesn't mean that it has to be disliked. At least for me, I can enjoy any song to whatever degree I want, granted that I might not want to hear it a lot because I already do out in the more mainstream side of things. Doesn't mean I still don't love it though.

ChthoniC

My first real listen to these guys (and gals). Not bad. They sound like Taiwan's answer to Cradle of Filth - but what makes them a bit more interesting to me is the use of classic Asian instrumentation such as the two-stringed violin called the erhu ("hena" in Taiwanese). It really gives the music a unique flavor, and it actually works pretty well within the framework of ChthoniC's symphonic black metal sound. Nice. :blaze:

Except for The Educated Fool and Como Estais Amigos which were great. I honestly think The Clansman is pretty overrated. It's got some great stuff in it, but is pretty long-winded if you ask me. Could've been a bout 2 minutes shorter. Yeah, I know I'm "crazy", but I don't care.

Futureal is great. Lightning, Two Worlds, Educated Fool, and Clansman are all really good too. Como and Eyes of a Stranger are pretty average but not bad. Angel is bad for reasons we all know. If they cut over half of the chorus repetition it would be one of the stronger songs on the album, the verses are really good.

Haha. I've entered the home stretch of my marathon. I have Rock in Rio, Dance of Death, Death on the Road, A Matter of life and Death, and some b-sides and whatnot that go along with everything, then I'll have done it. I expect to finish by the end of the weekend, if not sooner. It's been a lot of fun.

What the hell is experimental about Educated Horses? I think it's less experimental than anything he's done in his career; it's a straight-up dirty rock n' roll record save for a few samples here and there, and even though it's not "true Zombie" it feels like the most authentic thing he's ever done.

It's not that it's not "true Zombie", it's just nearly half of the tracks lack that industrial grit that he had on the earlier records. I like Educated Horses, I don't hate it at all. My problem with it is it just sounds really commercial, and a lot of the tracks don't really satisfy me personally. It's taste in the end really. And to authenticity, I really believe that AC and Hellbilly were definately more "his area", and that doesn't always necessarily mean it it more authentic, but in Rob Zombie's case, I think so.

Gotcha. Experimental relative to what we'd come to expect, but not objectively experimental. I think The Sinister Urge is his best record, personally, but there's stuff to be loved on everything he's ever done, both with White Zombie and solo.

Absolutely, saw him with Ozzy in '07. He smoked Ozzy to IMO. He was fantastic, the show he put on and the overall performance, great stuff. I liked Halloween a lot too, but the whole sequel thing really got me off on the wrong foot. This is pretty much a remake of Halloween 2 without it being officially said, and it just seems like a cash grab. Now I'm not about to blame him for a cash grab, because honestly, if he wanted to make money he would have gone way more commercial with Educated Horses (and I hope he doesn't do just that for this next one). But I digress. I just want Zombie back to music. I admire him for his talent in both fields and that he is generally very good at both, but my Zombie fan inside me tells me that I want him to tour and so all the stuff he likes in future times. Excuse me for the mini rant :D

This actually isn't too bad. I'm giving this album its first real spin in an attempt to include it on my 2009 rankings list, and I always try to listen objectively to anything new, regardless of expectations. I will give it this: the buzz I've been hearing that this album is a little less deathcore (meaning not so one-dimensional, with nothing but breakdowns galore), and a little more brutal death metal than JFAC's previous work.

I'm not a huge fan of these guys, but this album is playing out not too badly so far...(stay tuned)

:D Honestly I think they're the best power metal band. They totally fucking embrace the silliness of the genre but it never becomes fruity or lame.

This album really surprised me. I loved the energy of The War Within, which was for lack of better words 'rocking' without being sloppy. With Fallout From the War and Threads of Life, I feel like their clean and sharp musicianship improved, but the music sounded light on the death metal elements. Retribution, on first listen, sounds more 'brutal' and hard than the last two. I think its going to be high on my list.

I'm digging this album too. Don't know if it will make the top 10, but its pretty good. Skeletonwitch-y.
