I have pretty much the same thoughts. I like a good deal of the album, but some of the songs are completely forgettable. Woulda liked to catch them live 'cause I think it'd probably be a fun show, but ticket prices are ridiculous and they skipped Florida anyway. And yeah, Satch rules on it.

Mine is between A Darkened Mind and From Childhood's Hour, which is probably one of my favorite vocal performances out there. That song gives me the chills.

They're awesome, I personally like them a lot better than the originals (don't get me wrong, I still love the originals). It's just Schmier developed a great unique sound in his voice, and Destruction down-tuned sound better than they do in standard imo. They're definately tighter as a band too.

To this day, I never gave this song --or this album for that matter-- a fair listen. Now that I have listened to the former, let me count the number of ways wrong with it.

a) I usually try not to criticize what tuning a band plays in the studio, but this just might be the most boring downtuned song I've ever heard. Not to mention the most boring thrash song I've ever heard. I realize this band has been playing de-tuned since 1984, but I think if Slayer want to save their career, it's time to go back up to standard. "Show No Mercy" might not be the heaviest Slayer record, but it's one of the most menacing.

b) You know, maybe if the production was a little rawer, and this was the Slayer of 1985, the lyrics "relgion is rape, I've made my final choice, 666!" just might have sounded like classic Slayer, and for all their stupidity, still wouldn't have been as idiotic as the lyrics to "Necrophilac."

c) The verse instrumentation and vocal cadences are so fucking off rhythm, the verse sections just sound clunky.

d) It's never occured to me until now how fucking annoying Tom Araya's vocals sound nowadays. I don't know if I'll be able to listen to anything post Hell Awaits after this.

e) So Kerry, you really, really hate religion now. Exactly how is this different from any other year in the life of Slayer? This shit is just as pretentious as Stryper or Creed.

Holy fuck Slayer suck now. I would much sooner get Death Magnetic over this garbage.

James's "Country metal vocals" > Tom's incessant yellings.

I want to thank you for basically saying everything I've pretty much always thought about newer Slayer.
Now, truth be told, I'm not even much of a fan of early Slayer, but back when I was more into thrash in general, I did like the "classic" Slayer a decent amount, and when someone played me some of God Hates Us All, my instantaneous reaction was: "This is a joke, right?"

You pick the second-worst song on an album as a reference point?

The quality tracks Tinnitus Sanctus gave were better than most of the quality tracks Rocket Ride gave. Even though TS was generally even further away from power metal, it showed them having a great deal of maturity and developing a great melodic hard rock sound, as opposed to floundering around with the wannabe-glam/half-assed joke vibe of a lot of Rocket Ride.

Well...I do admit that "Christ Illusion" isn't necessarily my favorite Slayer album, but I think they have released worse. I know that isn't a very high compliment, but then again I wasn't trying to compliment the album. On the other hand, I am not quite as disappointed as you. I mean, I kinda liked "Jihad" and a couple of other tracks.

While I do actually agree with some of your criticisms, I don't think I would put them as strongly as you did. I think on some level it is very difficult to be objective when reviewing music. I think the gut feel comes first, and the justifications usually follow - but that's just an observation by yours truly and I certainly could be wrong (especially about others besides myself).

Anyway, I think we should just wait for about three weeks and see what the next installment has to offer. Then we can all speculate on the future of Slayer as a band. One way or the other, I think many of us have to agree that they are true legends and founding fathers of a genre - their long track record of success really isn't up for much argument.

Anyway, that's my :2cents:.

If you had simply said " 'Reign In Blood' isn't my favorite", I could have understood (I guess).

But you said it was...boring? Are you serious, or are you just trying to be different? I mean, I have read (and enjoy) a lot of your posts, and I was under the impression that you...well, that you would never say something like this, basically. I mean, the mosh riff in "Angel of Death" (1:38 to 2:05) is one of the most memorable things in all of metal. Ever. It is like a holy, sacred...thing. That combination of notes should be captured in a time capsule and sent into space to show the aliens that we earthlings knew how to rock at one time in our sad little existence. I mean...really. You're saying that you would hear that riff and just be like..."geez this is some boring-ass shit. I'd rather watch the grass grow."

REALLY?!?!?

I am dumbfounded. Truly.

Being contradictory because you're in a punchy mood or feeling feisty or something is one thing. Outright metal heresy is another.

...and you claim to like Slayer, too...but you don't like...Angel...of...Death (or the entire album from whence it came, for that matter). This does not compute, Will Robinson.

I don't think Reign In Blood is the best thing since sliced bread either, so I would respect Ravenheart's declaration of individuality, but since he thinks a recorded blowjob of Slipknot is the best thing they've ever done, I'm gonna have to call his opinion irrelevant and call him batshit insane. I award him no points and may God have mercy on his soul. :D

Yeah. This was really shitty. It was mostly laid-back like Tribe but with none of its redeeming qualities, and it had some literally obnoxious and hard to listen to songs. Basically this band is done, and it's sad, because I've never seen such a transformation. 1983-1994, 2003 Queensryche produced some of my favorite music. The rest is almost offensive to the senses. :( :(

Guns N' Roses

Idk why a lot of people complained about this album. I like it's chilled out vibe, like on "Sorry". It's tied for my favorite Album by Them (Use Your Illusion).

Idk, I might be crazy... :eyes:

Now I can definately call you crazy! I never thought I would find someone who's second favorite Megadeth record is CW, let alone their 1st Youthanasia (even though its an awesome record). My policy of to each his own still applies though :D I love all Megarecords, and I even kinda like Risk, so I shouldn't talk.

I love Risk. TWNAH is still my favourite though. Then Rust. Then Peace, Youthanasia and Risk.

Damn, never would have expected to find someone with that lineup either! Impressive. Rust would have to be my favorite, but out of interest, why is TWNAH your favorite? I have never heard that one before.

SFSGSW and Countdown are the two best, followed somewhat closely by Rust.

I think all Megadeth is the best, although I can't argue with your statement.

Whoa, this album was huge. Definitely a top 10 contender. This song in particular is beautiful and epic.

Man, I want to like TSHF, but there's just something on every song that annoys me and thus ruins the song for me.

Seriously debating buying this on vinyl, very possibly bootlegged, from a German mailorder for $23 (plus who knows how much shipping).
