Unleashed

This ain't no game, it's about life & dead
To satisfy your needs
You demand a sensation
And crave my anal feed
You'd be all right with just a "golden rain"
But you can beg and plead...

I only fuck the dead

Yeah, this song is somewhat uncharacteristic for Unleashed. I always thought lyrics like this would be better suited for a Cannibal Corpse album...most of Unleashed's stuff has always been about violence, anti-religion, vengeance and war.

1. Dude, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Just because I said I liked one song back in the day (mainly for the entertainment value, not for the musical talent involved), doesn't mean I had "piss poor musical taste". Where the hell are you making that conclusion from? It was back then that I was primarily listening to Voivod, Death, Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Pestilence, etc. etc. etc.
2. ...and by the way, I do like the Fugees as well. Not that agreeing with you makes my musical tastes any better or worse, and
3. You were the one listening to 2 Live Crew just mere hours ago, not me. I was simply making an observation based on your post. How can you rip on someone for commenting on a song that you were posting about?

Yeah, I get it - but your tone suggested otherwise. You should know better than to criticize someone's musical tastes openly on this board and not at least expect a reply - especially from someone who has established a half-decent reputation on this board, as I'd like to believe I have. I've never once - even jokingly - criticized anyone's taste in music on this board or any other...for many reasons, one of which is I wouldn't want to be misunderstood as being a judgmental prick. Or maybe I just choose my words more carefully than some other folks.

I disagree right back at ya. I own all of the material released by both bands, and have seen both live. Baroness is heavier than Torche almost all day long, with possible exceptions being Meanderthal (the track, not the album), or maybe Tarpit Carnivore. All the rest of Torche's material is what I would call (as have others), "doom pop" - with the emphasis being that they have a decidedly light tone for being a band so steeped in sludge as they are. It's just this dichotomy that makes Torche so interesting to me - heavy, yet not at all. Baroness just flat out fucking rocks. That was the comparison I was making, and I stand by it, thank you very much. ;)

Well I guess we're just on different sides of the same boat then (got all the albums by both, seen em both once opening for other bands). The only Baroness songs that don't really feature some kind of cleaner melodic guitar section are Coeur and Tower Falls, whereas Torche are just flat out sonically heavier on their recordings with regards to the guitar and drums and how they sound (vocals don't factor into the heaviness of a band so much as the instrumental elements). Red Album and Blue Record aren't, at least to my understanding of heavy, as 'heavy' as their first 2 EP's, which are their only releases that can compete with Torche in that regard, though its different types of heavy. Torche's earlier stuff is heavier than what they do now too but Meanderthal is still I think 'heavier' sounding than either of the last 2 Baroness. And live it was kinda no question, Torche sounded immense, Baroness were what you'd expect them to sound like, not too loud but not too quiet, cuz their music is more nuanced and intricate than Torche's.

Either way, you have to obtain - by any means necessary - a copy of Consuming Impulse. The album is really pure fucking gold, IMHO.
Here is a link to some decent samples:

http://www.amazon.com/Consuming-Impulse-Pestilence/dp/B000008JET/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1256913384&sr=8-1

The sound quality is surprisingly not that bad, but the samples are only 30 seconds long, unfortunately. At least it'll give you a taste of Martin's vocals (which is a big part of what made early Pestilence great, IMHO).

Of course, you could always listen to "Suspended Animation" on their MySpace as well (whole song). By the way, I didn't see "Out of the Body" there...?

...and by the way, here is a quote from Patrick Mameli in an interview with Blabbermouth regarding the recent resurrection of Pestilence:

"It's not a reunion, because I will not be playing with any of the old lineup guys, except Tony Choy, of course so... I always stated there WILL NEVER BE a reunion, and there won't be, since I never look back at the past and I refuse now to play with people that are not on the same musical level as I am. I sang on Testimony and Spheres (two albums later from Consuming Impulse!!), so no need for Martin. This because of the above statement I just made. Furthermore, Martin is doing other things. Good for him. So now you have two members that were in Pestilence before and one new guy. The reason why I bring Pestilence back to life is that people/fans keep asking me for this. The time is right now and Mascot is giving me the opportunity to do so. As you know, I have always been the driving force behind Pestilence, writing all the music and so forth, so that I can state: I will bring back Pestilence to life. More tech and way more brutal than ever before."

I listened to the first track from that Cormorant. Is it just me or do the guitar solos sound EXACTLY like Slash?

I don't know about Slash, but yes - sometimes the solos do have a "power metal" feel to them.

Do yourself a favor and listen to the entire album - I think it might be your kind of thing...

Well if Miklagaard was on the way from Cleveland to Baltimore I would think about swinging by and picking you up on the way there this year, but something tells me it isn't. ;)
Yeah, no band ever comes to Miklagaard, it sucks. You'd figure since Amon Amarth made a song about us at least they'd come...but no...douchers.
:)

Yeah, I think Suspended Animation was the first song I listened to. I could have sworn that Out Of The Body was one there, I don't recognize Fiend from the last time I was on their myspace so maybe they replaced it or something. I don't know. I played the 30 second sample and it sounded familiar.

This is really interesting and eclectic stuff. Musicianship is exceptional. Vocals are outstanding. Musical style is, well, funny - and interesting - and highly addictive.

It does seem, though, that the chorus riff for this particular song is VERY similar to the chorus riff for SoaD's "Aerials". Still, this stuff is just so damned original that I figure it must be a coincidence. Everything else is so creative, it's not like they would have to steal riffs from anybody.

Yeah, Vader would be good if only they were a little heavier, or faster - or both. :eyes:

EDIT: If I didn't know better, I would swear I was listening to Behemoth. So similar. Fellow countrymen, after all.

Awww...ain't that cute. Tell ya what, I'll let you hold your teddy bear in one arm, and your Vader EP in the other, while you curl up for your nappy nap.

Meanwhile, I'll be in the other room listning to Pestilence's "Consuming Impulse", followed by "Scream Bloody Gore" and "Leprosy".
