I'm listening to a bit of everything really. I'm making it a point to listen to all the studio albums one at a time. Next up is Powerplant. I've liked Gamma Ray for years now but in the past year or year-and-a-half they've rapidly shot up my list of favorite bands. They might even be top dozen at this point. They just have such a great discography with a lot of very good albums and a lot of great songs. Also they're so fucking tight live, and have tons of great riffs/leads/solos, so for a guitarist like myself, it's great to listen to.

No way are Gamma Ray anywhere near as gay as Sonata Arctica. Not even close. Sonata Arctica are like flagship power metal band of homosexuality. I still love their older albums for what they are, but what they are is really gay.
I admit there is a somewhat "gay" quality to some Gamma Ray stuff, but nowhere near all of it. The lyrics tend to bring it out more than anything I think. They have written a shitload of fantastic songs though.

I don't understand people who say they like Helloween but not Gamma Ray. Gamma Ray practically is The Keeper of the 7 Keys-era of Helloween extended into a band. I actually prefer Gamma Ray to Helloween due to the fact that they have managed to release 5-6 fantastic albums in a row, a feat that Helloween never came close to.

I don't know about Sonata Arctica totally being the flagship for gayness, but I definitely agree that Gamma Ray are not gay. If Gamma Ray are gay, then Heavenly are gay, Helloween are gay, Dragonland are gay, pretty much a strong perctenage of power metal bands. So the lyrics are a bit cheesy, who gives a fuck? Music is badass, that's what matters.

On Helloween v. Gamma Ray, Gamma Ray hands-down.

I'll steal your life, like the lives you took

Necroticism is good, but it tends to wander a lot. If you listen to the whole album without looking at the tracklisting, you'd think you're listening to the same song. It's a bunch of great riffs and intense moments, but they don't really have any direction, a musical "flaw" that extreme metal heads retardedly embrace.

Heartwork is better.

I've GOTTA be like the only person on this board that thought this year kinda blew for new music. This is honestly easily my least favorite year for new music that I've experienced properly (starting with 2004). I have heard, tops, 2 or 3 amazing albums. And even that's using the term amazing loosely, and from there it's a long fall. I am having a problem this year actually feeling like my #9 album even deserves the phrase "top 10".

Well quit listening to power and prog metal so much!

Maybe that's because you listen to power/prog exclusively (I'm not mocking you for it, it's just that I can't really think of many of those genre albums that came out this year).

Stratovarius, Dream Theater, Adagio, Bloodbound?

Out of curiosity Jeff, do you actually listen to other albums in other sub-genres of metalto see if you might like them?

I am going to resist getting offended here, but yes. I am familiar with what all sub-genres of metal sound like. However there are certain things I know I DO NOT like, and it doesn't matter if an album is getting reviews as one of the all-time greats in that genre, I am not going to like it. Not out of chosen close-minded-ness, but just out my own personal taste. I don't need to hear the new Immortal album to know I don't like it anymore than many people here don't need to hear the new Stratovarius or Dream Theater albums to make that general ruling.
For the record, I consider myself to be a fan of Progressive Metal, Power Metal (and all the Prog/Power hybrid combinations), Traditional Metal (ie Maiden, Saxon, Priest), "80s" Metal (ie Tesla, Dokken, Whitesnake), and Melodic Metal/AOR/Hard Rock. I don't exclusively listen to those 5 genres, but an album needs special recommendation for me to check it out if it doesn't fall into one of those loose categories. I also do like some old school thrash (Overkill, Anthrax, Megadeth), but I wouldn't call myself a real big fan or anything. For an example of exceptions, I don't like growling, and am pretty adamant about this, but I will listen to music with it involved, but if a band uses it more than just sparingly for effect, it's gotta really do something for me (case in point: Mercenary).

Well it's not a question of quantity whatsoever. I have actually set a new record for number of albums heard this year and it's still only October. It's a question of quality. My top 3 albums at this point are the 3 sole albums I expected to deliver big, and actually did. The majority of bands I previously listened to that I anticipated albums from really let me down - from the somewhat stale or boring to the complete WTFs a few of them pulled. I haven't heard a lot of "Shitty" albums this year, but the problem is that of the 50 or so I've heard, I'd say 3-5 are great, and 5 or so suck. The other 35-40 or so all range from "Pretty/Very Good to Alright But Meh". There's just nothing interesting going on.
For the record, I consider traditional power metal to be a dead genre, if not merely dying or in massive submission. The majority of all bands who were once parts of the movement have either defected to other styles for better or for worse, turned to total crap, or are just in a massive state of stagnancy. The last "Great" true power metal album by a true power metal band that I know of or at least consider to be that, came out in 2006. It's not been pretty. It's a huge reason why these days I consider myself much more of a progressive metal fan than a power metal one.

But to satisfy a curiosity you may have, my current top 10 for this year looks SOMETHING like this (no promises on some of the exact rankings):
01.Redemption - Snowfall on Judgment Day
02.Bloodbound - Tabula Rasa
03.Lord - Set in Stone
04.Machines of Grace - Machines of Grace
05.Killing Touch - One of a Kind
06.Mind Key - Pulse For a Graveheart
07.ColdSpell - Infinite Stargaze
08.Outloud - We Will Rock You to Hell and Back Again
09.Vindictiv - Ground Zero
10.Dream Theater - Black Clouds and Silver linings

The Dream Theater album has come a long way, but I am really starting to embrace the whole thing lately. A few honorable mentions go to Saxon, lion's Share, Anubis Gate, Place Vendome, Constancia, and Stratovarius for making an album that simply doesn't suck, which is what I expected.

Speaking of Power Metal albums in 2009, Jeff, I've heard a lot of people saying they liked it quite a bit, but I've only heard a few tracks off of it - have you heard the new Narnia "Course of a Generation" yet?

Also, don't know if you're into Amorphis at all, but god damn "Skyforger" kills! This album's moving up in my list.

tl did read.

I should have added listened to new albums to see if there's something you like, because bands progress and styles change. Case in Point: Mastodon. Now Mastodon's earlier albums has that growling vocal style which I know you don't like, but Crack The Skye doesn't. And it's definitely their proggiest effort.
