I wasn't crazy about it at first, but I also set my expectations super-high because of my love for their EP which preceded the album. It did grow on me, though, and it's certainly going to make my top 10 for the year.

Lost Feeling
Exploding Head
A Place to Bury Strangers

This song reminds me of The Cure almost to a fault, but this album is most definitely quality. This one also probably has a spot in my top 10 for 2009. Some kind of indie/noise rock/shoegaze excellence.

.

This is my first exposure, and I can only offer my amateur thoughts. I love the indie-pop elements, the post-rock elements, and black metal elements, and when they successfully craft them all together, with sensible transitions, it sounds great. But at times I felt like the way the tracks were ordered didn't make sense. I was trying to listen to the album as a whole piece, but it was rough at some points. Like the pause between Trouble (a soft little short piece) and the I XIII.... which is abrupt black metal. It felt awkward to me. All the parts sound right, but I don't think the entire project came out as well as it could have.

But the French is very cool sounding.

I like a band that can blatantly reference The Cure, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and My Bloody Valentine all over the place, and still have their own sound and kick ass.

In fact, this album has that in common with my other indie/hipster favorite from this year, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart--part of the fun is trying to discern the individual influences that go into their sound.

That abrupt change between soft and hard might be intentional. Also, if you downloaded it (like I did), I think those two tracks are mislabeled--the "I XIII..." track should be the ambient one, and "Trouble" should be the black metal one. But that's a minor point. Just give it another spin some time, and see what you think then. I wanted it to be better (again, my love for the EP), but in its own right it's definitely a great album.

Got the whole discography. ;)

Good call. They are one of those bands who actually have a lot of great songs on pretty much every album, instead of greatness just spread out here and there. They are one of the only bands I actually physically own a complete discography for that have over 5 albums. Imaginations From the Other Side is probably one of the greatest power metal albums of all-time.

This album is going to rip your face off and put it over its over its own face and lie down on the ground and pretend to be a mortally injured Sgt. James Pembry so it can be unknowingly smuggled out of the building on a gurney, only to rise up later in the ambulance, remove its oxygen mask, brutally kill the EMT and the driver and escape into the night.

That's what this album is gonna do.

That was horrible. Ozzy was so out of tune there. The guitars were tuned up, yes, but he was nowehere in the neighborhood regardless. Just gross. At least the version of "Paranoid" in the second half of the video was a little better (but then again it's pretty hard to ruin that song).
