Hmm...I don't really have anything to add that hasn't been mentioned already. The Sword's new one rocks, it'll probably make my top 10. Overall, though, I think this is going to end up being an off year, because almost all of my favorite bands put out records last year. The year could be redeemed if Opeth's new record is great, as well as if Dillinger Four actually puts one out like they said they would.

That's why you have to explore new bands. As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as an "off year".

I agree, and you're right, these are the kinds of years where I usually find a lot of new bands. I guess I just meant it's "off" year in that there aren't many albums that I'm excited for right off the bat.
I mean, c'mon. Explore new bands? Look who you're talking to ;)
SomewhereInTime72
04-13-2008, 11:12 AM
On "off years" I don't really buy a lot of new releases, cause when I decide to check out a new band (which happens more often without a bunch of my favorite bands putting out new albums) I tend to try out an older band or an older album by a band who put out an album recently or something.
Oh shit what the fuck I totally forgot Disfear's new one came out in '08 too, get at that one because it'll almost definitely make my end-of-year top 10 :rocker:
as far as exploring new bands goes, usually their latest albums arent good representations of what theyre capable of. think of some bands with really amazing albums, then go and look at the most recent one they put out. not a good marker.

Unfortunately you're exactly right. :(
Burden of Truth was incredible, and this new album is just uninspired and unamazing in comparisson. There's a few noteworthy tracks, but I was considerably dissapointed.
Top three releases of the year thus far are...
Royal Hunt - Collision Course: Paradox II
Dominici - 03, A Trilogy - Part 3 (Out this Tuesday)
Ayreon - 01011001
Cobalt- Landfill Breastmilk Beast. Just for that album title alone.

Wednesday 13 - Skeletons
If you like that kind of thing, it's outstanding.

Walls of Jericho's new Redemption EP is also excellent. If you like the mellow side of Stone Sour, check that out.

And power fans, check out the debut by X-World/5. Magnus Rosen (ex-Hammerfall) on bass, Nils K. Rue (Pagan's Mind/Eidolon) on vocals, Andy LaRocque (ex-King Diamond) on guitar and Reeves Gabrels (Razor Ball) on guitar. Excellent album.

A great epic metal band from Germany! Epic metal as Bathory taught us! The first thing that I noticed was the lead guitars! Awesome!
This is the first Crom full length album. The band has also released the EP "The Fallen Beauty".

This band comes from Sweden and they play AOR/Melodic Rock! This is their debut, but I think that the band has a lot to give to our music!
These are two releases that really impressed me, and that's why I put them in the top of my post.
As many of you said, the albums of Avantasia, Firewind, Metallica, JOP,Circle II Circle, Tiamat, Sister Sin etc are on the top of my 2008 releases list!

Communic - Payment of Existence would be the next in line to crack the top 10. I'm waiting on hearing the new Lanfear album (will next weekend), as that's got a lot of potential, as do a few other yet-to-be-released albums.

The new Cynic is rad..
Second half of the year hasn't really brought forth too much stuff worth raving about. The new Toxic Holocaust is rad as fuck, best thrash album of the year no doubt, and a couple surprising punk albums like the new Fucked Up and Transistor Transistor have been pretty cool, but otherwise not much has been very notable. The new Amon Amarth and Motorhead are both rock solid but obviously don't break the mold at all and maybe don't quite have the amount of catchy/memorable songs that their previous albums did.
These are some I'm really looking forward to hearing that haven't come out yet:
Bible Of The Devil- Freedom Metal
Valkyrie- Man of Two Visions
Hammers Of Misfortune- Fields/Church Of Broken Glass
Darkthrone- Dark Thrones and Black Flags
EDIT: I should mention actually that the new Burst album 'Lazarus Bird' is fucking great, probably the best modern progressive metal album I've ever heard. It's not typically my style but I definitely recommend checking it out.

One of those people who's just like: "Old school! Old school!" all the time and putting down newer metal, complaining that nothing good is coming out these days.Just like? or sort of like? LOL You'll notice like on further scrutiny like I said "most of the new stuff." I am not like "all the time putting down like newer metal." Not all new stuff is like metal either, or is it? I do like some new stuff such as Manticora for example as well like and so therefore, I am like "not complaining that like nothing good is coming out these days." So your point is like.......................what exactly?
The new Motorhead is mediocre. That is all.

I'm just gonna go ahead and assume that Rome - Masse Mensch Material has not been mentioned yet. Really can't recommend it enough. Dark neofolk/industrial stuff, with deep, haunting vocals (almost a la Peter Steele, but that's kind of an unfair comparison) and some martial elements. At first I was a bit turned off by the martial aspect, and I kind of suspected they fell into that category of neofolk bands with fascist leanings, but some content on their myspace seems to indicate the exact opposite, if anything. This album was a grower, but after a few listens it shot up to #1 on my (admittedly short) 2008 list.

Got a few more for the last month or so, if any of you care to try them:
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend (Great, catchy indie pop/rock--don't listen to what people say about them, just listen for yourself)
No Age - Nouns (uber-cool noise-pop, heavily influenced by My Bloody Valentine and probably many others)
Cynic - Traced in Air (very melodic, avant-garde/prog/something with basically no wankery, focused on Buddhist/meditational themes, might be better than their only other album Focus, which came out 15 years ago)
Gridlink - Amber Gray (basically the continuation of the broken-up Discordance Axis--frantic, technical/progressive grind)
